Thursday, August 13, 1959 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER McCullom Lake SOFTBALL TEAM IN THREE-WAY TIE FOR FIRST PLACE Eve Levesqne We point with pride to our h%d slugging softball team which is in striking position to bring home the trophy this year! The men have displayed team spirit and a will to win which seems to be. paying off. A great deal of the credit must go to George (Bud,) Cable who has proven himself to be an excellent manager. And a good manager is no better than the men who play for him. We say \'£ts off" to the rest of the team who include the local men Lenny Jensen, Dave Hansen, and Fred Matthesius. The rest of the players from areas outside the village are Ken Crook. George Street, Kenny Brand, Ed Todd, Don Sullivan, Jim Condon, Stu Kutney, Dick Grau, "Big" Ernie feerez. Bill Schmidt,. Bud Lawrence, and Bob Busse. £)n Tuesday, Aug. 4, the local lads' defeated Old feridge by a margin of 9-4 thereby knocking the opposition out of a 4-way tie for first. The outcome of last Tuesday's game against Holliday Inn will be published next week. Tonight (Thursday) the men are scheduled to take " on Casey's Sportsman's team and th.e results will affect the standings, of course. Here's hoping lady luck is with our team and they can really put McCullom Lake on the map in the sports department!! Fred "Put on the Feed Bag" Every year, Fred Matthesius gives an annual outing for his employees and their families. One year, it was a trip to the museum (with a bus ancKall). £®>ther year found th^/group on a family picnic. Last Wednesday it was strictly for tlife^ adults with a fancy dinner at Hazelman's near Trevor, Wise. Anne and Fred played host and hostess to Mr. and-Mrs. Norman Fredricks of Crystal Lake. Dorie and Bill Brennan, Dorothy and John Cunningham, Dennis and Ted Lind with their dates, Sharon and Margie, and Lil and Dave Hansen. Lil is the employee m this case, serving in the capacity of office manager. In addition to all the food they could eat, there was a spirit of camaraderie which does much to improve working conditions all year long. It's profitable to work--but it's fun to play! "All Hands on Deck" This will be the war cry beginning Thursday, Aug. 27 through Sunday, Aug. 30 when the McCullom Lake Sportsmen's Club will begin the big project of lake conservation and restoration. Every able bodied man and all the boats available will be urgently needed! It is.estimated that 40-50 ton of carp plus thousands of stunted fish MUST be removed! Rotenone (non-poisonous) will be used to stun the fish: It affects their gills, and they must come to the surface. Whien they do, the men in boats \yill scoop them up and the entire cargo will be disposed of. Arrangements for getting rid of the fish has been made. The entire project is being, carried on with the cooperation and advisement of the Illinois Conservation Department. When the lake has been cleaned out. it will be re- j stocked with, black bas§ and i blue gills in October, f The necessity for MAN power cannot be over-emphasized. Will YOU be there? First Air, Experience Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Fricke are still talking about their recent trip into the "wi|d blue yonder". Jake Levesque rented a private airplane and took the Frickes, the Earl Nelsons, and Mr. and Mrs. A1 Daker into the air. (Not all at one time!) As a result of the trip, A1 is known as "Ace"! It seems as though he was frightened to death, and kept his eyes closed tightly during the entire trip! Speaking of the Frickes, they will be entertained at a dinner in Chicago at the home of Mrs. Eva Nelson in honor of their 36 years of wedded bliss, Aug. 18. This date also marks the first anniversary for daughter Lorraine and fiance Karl Blum. It was just a year ago that Lorraine and Karl were betrothed. Page Nine In Mcmorium The teen-agers held a dance last Saturday and dedicated it to the memory of one of their chums, Harry Berry, Jr., who lost his life in a drowning accident on Sunday, June 7. The young people, with the permission of the parents of the boy, hope to purchase one or more life preservers to be used at the beach. Cullom -Knoll At the annual election of officers held Thursday, Aug. 6, all the current slate was reinstated with the exception of trustee "'Don Parenti. Other committments made it impossible for him to serve in this capacity. Five hundred dollars was allocated to put more sand into the lake this winter. There is no^.doutit of the improvement in the^ bathing area since the sand was installed last winter. And don't the colorful buoys marking off the good swimming area improve the looks of the water? Hospitalized - Hope Mrs. Ruth McGinley is feeling much better after her recent hospital trippf Shex was a patient at McHenry Hospital for several days last week, and came home on Thursday. Nothing Funny About This! Penny arid Doug Miller are heartsick over the disappearance of their three pet bunnies which were stolen last week. One morning, at feeding time, there was one bunny missing, and the next day, Thursday the other two were gone. The youngsters sincerely hope the culprit is taking good care of their pets. They were wee little things abandoned by their mother and required bottle feeding. Mrs. Ella Fricke was informed by husband Dewey the other a.m. that it was no longer necessary to water her beautiful geraniums. They simply weren't there! The Frickes had planted them ih hanging pots in their garden hoping to beautify the surroundings. They were nurtured all during the winter and were in full bloom. According, to the neighbors, no suspicious wanderers were observed so the theft must have been carried out in the dark of night. How LOW can you get? Westward Ho! and Back Again' The Morris family, poppa Sinclair at the wheel and mother Betty "riding herd" on their five Indians, took off in the new station wagon and headed for Oregon for a two week jaunt. They returned home last Sunday and stated that the trip was simply divine. It was wonderful to be reunited with members of their families once more. SHOP IN McHENRY 'dtl edical Mirror Delayed Speech Calls for Action • Diets and Hearts • Q. My 32-month-old boy Mays onty a feto words. Is there cause for worry? Hoto soon should I consult a speech therapist?-- B. B. A. There is cause for concern, or better, for action. It's true that no two children in the same family acquire speech at the same age, or in the same way, or with equal ease. Some babble early and may even be saying a £few words by the first year. Others develop speech very slowly. Girls begin to talk earlier than boys. On the average, a child should want to talk by the 18th month and will jabber away Suite merrily. The golden age for eveloping normal speech is during early childhood. Various things can cause delayed speech. Sometimes an unrecognized childhood disease is responsible. Parents, relatives, or older children may have so anticipated $the child's wants that there is no necessity for making his needs known. Late talkers should first be examined by the family doctor or pediatrician. Let him plan the future course of action. Don't put off seeking good medical advice just because someone may have said that the child will "grow out of it." " . _ r " ~ " • - i Q. I am 55 end have hardening of the arteries. Would diet or drugs help?--A Conn, reader. A. Sclerosis or "hardening" of the arteries is perhaps slowed down by limiting the intake of dietary fat in instances where the blood shows more fat than is considered -normal. Although blood fat is not the only cause of hardening of the arteries, it seems to be a definite factor. There is at this time no drug that will prevent "hardening" of the arteries or reverse the process once it starts. However, doctors do prescribe certain drugs which have been found helpful in improving blood flow through the more or less narrowed, "hardened" arteries.
