McCullom Lake OPERATION "FISH REMOVAL" HUGE SUCCESS AT LAKE Eve Levesque Approximately 25 tons of carp aind stunted fish have been removed from McCullom Lake since "operation--fish removal" started last Thursday, according to Floyd Fry, president of the Sportsmen's club. The tonnage fell below what was anticipated, but the actual number of fish recovered, far exceeded expectations! Fourteen men from the fisheries division of the Illinois Department of Conservation were on hand for the project, including Bruce Muench of Marengo and James Vavra from the division of law enforcement. There is sp^&ial interest in this project for the reason that our lake is the largest in acreage in Illinois in which this type of operation has been attempted. The amount of Rotenone used was 400 gallons while only 163 gallons were recommended by the manufacturer. Some of the carp ran as high as 12 pounds but the average weight was 1.44 pounds while the average weight for crappies was .07 pounds. ? The cleanliness of the lake is already apparent. On Thursday, the depth reading was 4 inches, and by Sunday, it had cleared to a depth of 7 inches! The depth reading was measured by a special instrument. Cost of the entire project w i l l p r o b a b l y r u n a b o u t $10,000, according to Mr. Fry but the Sportsmen's Cluh will underwrite about $3,500 of this amount. Without the volunteer labor the project could not have been undertaken but special thanks and appreciation must go to Mrs. Larry Strandquist of Lakeland Park for her efforts on that side of the lake, to Nick Tabor, chairman of the lake committee, and to director Gene ^Johnson. Continued support from all the residents surrounding the lake will be required to complete the project. More money will Jjje, required and there will be a^dpfcve' for funds in the near fimSre. Anyone wishing to contribute may do so by contacting Flftjfd Fry at EV 5-0348. The idea of re-stocking the lake with brooder bass has been abandoned and instead fingerlings will be used. These will run about 3-4 inches for bass and 2-3 inches for blue gills. This will insure larger fish by 1961. There were many who said the job couldn't be, done, but we can be thankful there were men who ignored the pessimists and brought the project to a successful conclusion! Early Deadline This Week Because of the Labo? Day holiday, all deadlines will be set up, and it would be much appreciated if you would call iri your news items by tonight, Thursday, or early Friday morning. The new telephone number is EV 5-4141. Thanks, in advance. With your co-operation, we can have a column in spite of the shortage of time.
