But every so oft eh re- j searchers de<®elop new and bet- i ter inse<Aicides to help farm- j ers battle these pests. For 1959 housefly control, ; entomologists at the University ' of Illinois and Illinois Natural | History Survey are recom- ! mending malathion, diazinon j or korlan. j These residual sprays may | be used in all livestock shelters | and around the house. Malathion and korlan are relatively safe, but diazinon is more toxic and requires greater caution. Neither diazinon nor krolan should be applied directly to j animals. However, malathion is suitable for such use and will control lice and mange on cattle. J Diazinon and korlan will control houseflies for three to I five weeks: malathion, for one to two weeks. All three of these chemicals are sold under commercial trade names. Be sure to follow directions and precautions listed on the containers. Although these insecticides will effectively control houseflies; they are only a supplement to good sanitation. Moist, decaying organic materials, such as rotting straw, manure •nd garbage, attract houseflies and provide ideal condij t ions for egg-hiving and m:tg- | «?ot survival. Proper disposal of such material will greatly reduce fly populations. DECISIONS ON SOCIAL SECURITY ACTS IMPORTANT Many women have an important decision to make when the.v attain age 62. Under the 1956 amendments to the Social Security act, women are able to obtain social security monthly payments three years earlier than under the old law. The amount of the benefit however, will be reduced for women workers and for wives of retired workei*s. The amount of the reduction depends on the number of months between the time piymerts start and the time the applicant reaches age 65. This reductien is permanent even after age 65 is attained. Widows and dependent mothers of deceased workers, however, may receive unreduced benefits at age 62. Before making a decision to start getting benefit payments before age 65. a working woman or a wife of a retired worker will naturally want to knowhow long she will be ahead in total benefits paid. As a working woman she will be ahead for the first fifteen years: as the "wife of a "etired beneficiary she will be nhead for the first twelve years. The decision must he made by each woman as to whether it's worth more to her to have the benefits before 65, at a pemanently reduced rate, or to wait until 65 and get a higher rate. The social security office will furnish her with all necessary information but the decision must be made by the individual. Pleasure THE PLEASURE and delight of knowledge and learning far surpasses hll other in nature. For, shall the pleasures of the affections so exceed the pleasure of the sense, as much as the obtaining of desire or victory exceeds a song or a dinner? And must not of consequence the pleasure of the intellect or understanding exceed the pleasures of the affections? We see in all other pleasures there is satiety t and after they be used, their freshness departs; which shows well that they are but deceits of pleasure, and not pleasures: and that it was the novelty which pleased, and not the quality.--Francis Bacon,British, 17th century. 7 large room, year 'round home at Wonder Lake. It stood at 125.2 billion nounds and was exceeded only by the 125.9 billion pounds produced in 1957 and the 125.5 billion pounds in 1956. Last year's downturn in production was the firrt "ince 1952. Miscellaneous If men in this life only have hope; if in this life only can they enjoy, it is not strange or unreasonable, that they should seek their happiness by avoiding all things that disease them here, and by pursuing all that delight them; wherein it will be no wonder to find variety and difference. For if there be no prospect beyond the grave, the inference is certainly right--"Let us eat and drink"--let us enjoy what we delight in--"for tomorrow we shall die."--John Locke, British philosopher. Philosophy does not contend against natural pleasures, provided they be moderate; and only preaches moderation, not a total abstinence. The power of its resistance is employed against those that are adulterate and strange. Philosophy says that the appetites of the body ought not to be augmented by the mind, and ingeniously warns us not to stir up hunger by saturity; not to stun, instead of merely filling, the belly; to avoid all enjoyments that may bring us to want; and all meats and drinks that bring thirst and hunger. -- Michel de Montaigne (16th century), creator of the essay. mips on . iraffic Safety CHARLES F. CARPENTlER _Secretary of State1; With the hundreds of miles ot toll roads and expressways now available to Illinois motorists, this might be a good time to go over some of the fundamental rules ot safety which appty to expressway driving. Slow down and look before turning into an expressway approach. Because of their divided traffic streams, you can not go north if you enter from a "southbound" approach. If you make a/plistake, you should proceed with/the tral* flc until the next interchange. At this time you can leave the ex-* press way and re-enter by the proper approach. Do NOT attempt to cross the center strip. Wait for an opening in traffic before entering the stream of vehicles. Expressway drivers are traveling a lot faster than you will be at first. Keep far to the right while you aVe getting up to the average epeed of traffic. When leaving the expressway, move to the correct turn-off lane and lower your speed. Begin signalling your intention of turning off as soon as you slow down. Drive slowly, or stop if necessary, before you enter traffic on the cross highway. A copy of the completely new "Rules of the Road" booklet will be sent to you free upon request. Write to CHARLES F. CARPENTlER, Secretary of State, Spring field, Illinois.
