A Pflgg Fpurteep THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Tuesday, November 24, 1359 McCullom Lake FIREMEN, POLICE. DOG, NEIGHBORS HEROES IN FIRE Eve Levesque Mrs. Bertha Lee gave the first alarm for the fire which destroyed two homes in the village and seriously threatened two others, hers included, last Thursday morning. Details of the holocaust may be found on the first page of the Plaindealer. It is the purpose of this article to acquaint readers with the human interest angle. A perky little black cocker spaniel named Trixie and quite a performer, deviated from his role of the perfect house pet by leaping on his master's bed and causing enough of a disturbance to rouse him and his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Liacas of 723 Orchard Drive were awakened from sound sleep in time to give valuable assistance to Mrs. Monica Morris and her seven youngsters. Mrs. Morris had just purchased her home from the Mc- Creedys and moved in on Nov. 7. Thanksgiving Day will mark the first anniversary of her husband's death. She was so pleased with her new abode and had already made improvements on the place. Her family includes Jack. 15; Janet. 14: James, almost 13: Leonard. 11: Clifford. 8: Pamela. 5: and Barbara, 4. The four boys and Janet had been using upstairs bedrooms, but two nights before the fire they started to sleep downstairs because of the cold. Their rooms were facing the east which was the side of the house which was threatened by the fire \1hich started next door! The Morris home suffered very little damage, we are most happy to report. The roof is slightly burned and scorched and the east wall will need touching up. but it could have been catastrophic for this gallant family The prompt response from the McHenry fire department and from our own police offic e r s , L a r r y M u r r a y . J a c k Schlofner and Earl Murray, and the concentrated efforts on the parts of all the neighbors will be long remembered by this family who were not strangers to sorrow and almost lost "all their wordly possessions. Deepest svmpathy to the Gera'd Swederski family who had high hopes for their new home which they had just rented. All their furniture had already been moved into the Scotella residence and there remained only the redecorating to be done before they "'would take possession. Thev are now rtsidiftg at 216 South Drive in Wonder Lake. Mr. Swederski was vinaware that his home was gone until he came to the village to do some work in it, on Thursday evening. Firemen battled for hours to control' the flames which blazed through the Erban residence. This was necessary to protect the home of hardworking Mrs. Bertha Lee. There is no visible signs of . damage to her home. Though the fire has taken its toll in property damage which will probably never be recovered, it is a grateful community that realizes no one was injuried. Two Lives United In a heart warming ceremony at St. Patrick's church on Saturday, Nov. 21, " Mrs. Nada Costa of Orchard drive became the bride of Mr. William J. Klapperich of McHenry. One of the groom's sons, John, and his family reside on Maple Hill Drive. For the morning nuptial, Mrs. Costa wore a street length dress of poudre blue brocade satin with a jacket ana" chose white accessories and clear plastic slippers. Her Corsage was of white roses. Mrs. Roseal O'Connell of McHenry attended the bride as matron-of-honor while the groom's son, William B. Klapperich of Hunterville subdivision served in the capacity of best mam Immediately after the senice. a wedding breakfast for the newly united couple and the immediate family was served at Hettermann's in Johnsburg. An open house reception was held at Mrs. Costa's home in the afternoon. In the very near future, the couple will leave for Miami. F;a.. to spend about two months, including Christmas and New Years. They plan to stay with Mr. Klapperich's daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Mix of that southern city. * We are especially happy for Mrs. Costa who will be acquiring a ready made family of children and grandchildren as a result of the union. Our very best wishes to both of them. your family and your friends, too! If You Enjoy Good Reading You will be interested in "operation bookmobile" which is gaining impetus. Mrs. Swanson, the state librarian from Springfield, wak recently in Lakemoor and explained the plan to Miss Diana Zundel and James Buchwalter, who operates the library in that community. A petition will be circulated in the near future, in order that the issue can come up for a vote. If passed, three trustees will be appointed and it will be their job to set up a route, serving the entire McHenry area and outlying districts. For further information, you mav visit Firehouse No. 3 in Lakemoor any Thursday night between 7 p.m. and 8 pm. or call Mr. Buchwalter at EV. 5- 3862 after 5 p.m. Let the Snow Fall Where it may. but villagers will not be inconvenienced too badly. The snow plowing contract was awarded at the special meeting of the village board, held on Monday, Nov. 16. It has been a long hard struggle to "make ends meet" but the squad car is now all ours! The final payment has been made. Another important bit of business which was transacted was the passing of ordinance No. 40 which is an amendment to our traffic regulations. After publication, it will be mandatory for all drivers to stop while the school bus is receiving or discharging students, either in the village or on the blacktop road. Drivers of vehicles must also come to a complete Stop at all stop signs. According to the amendment, no one under the age of sixteen is legally allowed to dirve a car! A renilirly scheduled meeting of the trustees and president was held on Monday. Nov. 23. The results will be covered in the next column.
