t if Sage Four THE MeHENRY PtAWDEALEH PAUL AND FLO KRUMSKE t They warned us to do our 'Christmas shopping early! » Right now, our slave-driving 'shop foreman is crackin' the J whip. He is about ready to • wrap up the forms for this \ week and let's get that copy on rthe hook. So, we shop for news or • words. First we must remind J you that our unbeaten Warriors travel to Zion Friday I night. ) This Zion-Benton team is f rated as one of the top teams *ln the area so look for action. v Just let a couple of our sharp ^Shootin' boys click the same #jiight and the top-rated teams {Will have a chore on their l^h^nds. ( But, please boys, don't give ^iis such scares in the fourth Ibuarter. "Mac" sent us a schedule on ;the Notre Dame High School k Jjfioliday tournament at Niles. IfWatch for it next week. McHenry meets Taft in the First game of the meet on Satlrday, December 26. More ibout that later. £ The Kiwanis football banquet was good fun for all. WARRIORS ED6E DUNDEE 53-52 IN THRILLER Dundee Five Puts Scare Into Crowd In Fourth Quarter By Lambert Freund ^ Attorney Bill Caldwell i! brought us a stack of tickets * to sell for the Marian Central If sports banquet to be held next ji Sunday night. Give us a call fright now, please. g Thirds are poppin' at the e Chapel Hill Country Club. «. Nice going, Terry. Whoops! Geneva's basketball « team will play the Warriors ft here Saturday night. Rememg- ber that game with them last vear? It was a doozy. They are B real good. ^ Time ran out. | Marengo Defeats £ Merchants 84-79 By Mickey Schaefer Last Sunday Marengo defeated the McHenry Merchants 84-79 to knock us into a tie for second with Dundee with a 5-2 ;ecord behind Cary with a 6-1 record. Balance scoring was the key factor for Marengo. Dumproff lead Marengo with 24, followed by Marrs and Samuelson with 18. Don Bentz lead all our scorers with 19. Cliff Fulton was next with 17, he was followed by Roger Benson with 11. This was a bad game for the Merchants and a good one to get out of their systems. , Next Sunday the Merchants , play Crystal Lake in a home ; game. I Marengo (84) G The Warriors won a real thriller at Dundee Saturday night by squeaking past the Red Raiders by only one point. The victory was the third in league competition this season as the Warriors retained their first place position in the conference. The main flaw in the Warrior attack seems to be the fourth quarter jinx. In each of the four games played by McHenry thus far, they have gone into the fourth period with a respectable lead only to be outscored by at least five points. Coach Fulton says it will take plenty of hustle, especially in this deciding fourth quarter, if the Warriors wish to continue on their winning ways. McHenry got off to a slow start in the game scoring only 6 points in the first period but came back strong in the second with 16 to be down only 3 points at halftime, 25-22. In the thiftf period the tight Warrior defense held the Raiders to only six points while scoring 15. In the fourth period the Warriors nearly blew a six point lead as the Raiders outscored McHenry, 21-16. However, due to two free throws by Tom Creighton in the final seconds, the Warriors managed to slip under the wire and come out on top, 53-52. Bill Oeffling and Mike Creighton led the scoring for McHenry with 14 points each. Calbow was tops for Dundee with 19. Mike Creighton led the team in rebounds with 14 and John Steinbach again led in assists with 6. Dundee shot at a .407 clip while McHenry hit with a percentage of .395. Libertyville, coming up with three men in the starting lineup over 6-2 against a relatively small McHenry team, failed to overshadow the speed of the runn i n g W a r r i o r s . M c H e n r y ' s hustle, both on the floor and under the basket, proved to be the dominating factor in the victory, as the Warriors constantly penetrated the Wildcat press and pulled down a total of 46 rebounds. The loss put Libertyville in the second division in conference standings and kept the Warriors in a tie for first. The Warriors jumped to an early lead in the first quarter, 16-12, and by half time had increased the lead to ten points. In the third period McHenry scored only 15 points over the 14 by the 'Cats. In the fourth period the McHenry pace slackened slightly and the Libertyville team, with, some excellent defensive work, outscored the Warriors by five points, 23-18, but the attempt at victory was in vain as the Warriors came out on top, 66- 60. McHenry's scoring was well balanced, with Bob Vaupell leading the attack with 18 points, followed closely by John Steinbach with 17. Mike Creighton/ accounted for 12 points ana Bill Oeffling for 9. ^Nieholas led Libertyville with 17 points. Mike Creighton again played a fine defensive game and came up with 15 rebounds. John Steinbach led the team in assists with nine. The Warriors hit from the floor at a .431 pace, their high for the season, while Libertyville shot .371. ACCIDENTS RISE Both fata] and non-fatal accidents begin to rise sharply with the end of daylight saving time. December^ is the worst month of the year, with deaths averaging more than 116 per day. Both of these famous bowlers hold records from here to there. , GEORGE VERGARA SHOWS CLASS AS WRESTLING CAPTAIN One of the brightest aspects of this years Wrestling team is senior grappler George Vergara. Only a month ago, George hung up his football cleats to put on the orange and black wrestling tights for his final year of competition. Wrestling had helped him become one of the finest linebackers in the North Suburban Conference. Wrestling and football go hand in hand since desire and conditioning are their main exponents. He readily admits though that wrestling is the toughest sport in high school. Wrestling six minutes in competition is like playing an entire game of football. Vergara will captain a varsity team made up of Sophomores and Juniors. In fact, George is the only senior on the starting twelve. At 165 pounds, he has defeated opponents this Reason from Warren and Wauconda. Coach Hutchinson says, "George has the ability and desire for a ri|al champion and will be a hard man to beat." Leading and giving confidence to a hustling team of underclassmen is an important challenge for Captain Vergara. Richmond Zephyrs Schedule Games 13f will On Sunday, December the Richmond Zephyrs hold a Land-O-Lakes Basket* ball Schedule consisting of three games at the Richmond High School, first game starts at 1:30. OBSTR|J££EEP VISION An estimated 10 per cent of all fatal accidents occurring during the winter months result from obstructed vision. The Institute for Safer Living says this is reason enough for refusing to drive "half blind". Every motorist should take the brief time required to stop and use clean rags and elbow grease to clean fogged, rain', snow or mud spattered windshields and windows. » SHOP IN MeHENRY MeHENRY RECREATION Business Men's League -- Bimbos No. 1 2731 -- Brennan's 2758.
