Last week Barrington and McHenry were tied for first place with 8-2 records. This week finds four teams in a tie with 8-3 records. Crystal Liake and Zion having joined the top notchers. Maybe they are trying to prove something like the college students trying to see how many can crowd 'into a telephone booth. The big test. Monies Friday night when Coach Fulton takes : his boys to . Barrington for a show down. That game needs no ballyhoo. When McHenry and Barrington had chances last week to gain full rights to first place they flubbed. Zion took Mc- Henry's measure while Libertyville knocked over Barrington for the second time this season. We were thinking of this tight race when we read the following in a Waukegan lunch room this week: "Anyone who can keep a level head in al! j the Broncos, WARRIORS DEFEAT ST. EDWARD'S IN FAST GAME 78-65 by Lambert Fremiti Saturday the Warriors made the long haul to Elgin to defeat St. Edwards 78-65. Unlike the tall, slow giants of last year from this school, this year's team was small and fast, and played the same type of running game as the Warroirs. . The Warriors started slowly and poorly in the first quarter and fell-to the Green Wave 22-14: In the second round the action startyfd as , the Warriors rolled up 18 points to 8 for St'. Ed's, leading at the half 32-30. McHenry took the final two rounds 26-25 and 20-10 for the 78-65 non-conference victory. Balanced scoring and fine team play won the game as four men hit in double figures. Mike Creighton had 24. Bill Oeffling 19, Jim Hester 15, and Paul Morenz had 14. Flores had 23 for the Green Wave and McDonald had 21. Next weekend seems to be the toughest of the basketball schedule. Friday the Warriors travel to Barrington to meet a share holder MERCHANTS ON SCORING SPREE IN TWO GAMES this confusion, just doesn't understand the situation." CRAXE TECH ! COMLVG | The Warriors face a big test ! on Saturday night of this week i when Crane Tech's high rank- I ing teams come to town. , Since Crane ranks as one of j the top three teams in Chica- j go. many basketball followers j throughout the county and j North Suburban area are plan- j ning to see the game. ! TTiis may be too big a bite I for the Warriors to chew, but j the MCHS Athletic department i& following a pattern of scheduling top teams rather than "soft touches. There will be two games Saturday night. Maybe you should get around early. Looks like & sizeable crowd will be there. And maybe those Crane Tfeeh boys think they are; coming out for a,picnic. They could get a surprise. We dunno. Let's go see. in the conference title. On Saturday McHenry plays host to a fast moving team from Crane Tech of Chicago. McHenry (78) FG FT FPTS 31 Creighton. T. MOVE INTO TIE by Lambert Freund Don Bentz Sinks 50 Points To Beat Lakers 129 to 67 By Mickey Schaefer A , Thursday night the Merchants defeated Crystal Lake 129-67 in a conference game. The win moved oui^league record to 12 wins and 4 losses. Dundee is in first with 13 wins' and 3 losses. This Sunday the teagtie leading team from Dundee comes to town to plav the Merchants at St. Mary's gym at 2:30. A victory for the Merchants would move us in a tie with Dundee for the lead. Dundee has beaten us two times earlier this year. The 129 points by McHenry was one point shy of the league record of 130. Don Bentz, former McHenry high school star of last years conference championship team, lead our scoring with a remarkable point total of 50. He scored this on 22 baskets and 6 free throws. Bentz's 50 point total was 2 points shy of the all time league record of 52 points held by some player from Woodstock. This is McHenry's first year of basketball in the Northern Illinois Basketball League. - Roger Benson was-next wfth 26 points, his persona] high for the season. Art Beck and Jack Schaefer also scored in double figures with 20 and 19 points respectively. The Merchants played a practice game at Woodstock Sunday against the K. of C. of Woodstock. Don Bentz again led all scorers with 31 points. Roger Benson scored a respectable 24 for McHenry. Art Beck and Jack Schaefer again scored in double figures with 17 and 10 points respectively.
