Dated this 26th day of February, A.D., 1960. GEORGE JEDLICKA Secretary RICHARD R. CROSS. Attorney Woodstock, Illinois (Pub. March 3, 1960) INSECT CONTROL Application of insecticides to field crops, in accordance to Illinois Natural History Survey recommendations, saved Illinois farmers an estimated $5,- 444,334 last year. This figure is considerably more than the $3,023,223 savings estimated for 1958. according to Dr. H. B. Petty, entomologist with the Illinois Agricultural Extension Senice and the Natural History' SuiVey. Data on control of insects on field crops in the state are gathered annually by the Illinois Extension Service. Persons under 25 account for less than 15 per cent of the total driving population, yet they are involved in nearly 30^ per cent of all highway accidents Also, according to the Institute for Safer Living, accidents involving under 25 drivers tend to be more severe, with corresponding greater injury and property damage. In far too many cases young driver accidents result from speeding, with destructive impact when the crash occurs. The Drivers Seat *THE DRIVER'S SEAT A more inseparable twosome than the oft-quoted "boy and his dog" is. today, a "boy and his car." This is, one of the opinions expressed in a xecent 'teen-age survey made by Pur^, due university. The nationwide poll showed that one out of three high school sophomore, junior and senior boyc owned his own car -- which would indicate that it's--cars over dogs by a considerable majority. Girls, it seems, are less addicted. Only seven per cent of them are automobile owners. "Prestige" is the answer to why the 'teen-agers are willing to spend hard-earned money for car repair bills and insurance. in addition to the original cost of the car. Most, youthful owners take part-time jobs to support their four-wheeled amours. For them, alas, insurance protection costs about- three times more' than it costs adult drivers. Although there is some question about the "one-out-ofthree! ownership figures among licensing officials, there is no doubt of the ever-increasing numbers of 'teen-agers takjne to the roads, and of the "potential threat to traffic safety many of them represent To turn this 'teen-age invasion into a safety asset rather than a liability, high school drivereducation courses are being improved and expanded in many areas. And progressive insurance companies are giving a welcome discount to graduates of accredited training programs. An example of school sys- 'ems that are taking a realistic approach to mass instruction is Evanston Township high school, which has just expanded its facilities to provide for 1,650 drivers a year. At Evanston, a thirty hour classroom course, emphasizing "rules of the road" -- meanings of signs, signals, markings, traffic laws and penalities - is compulsory for all sophomores. . Two additional phases n four-week period of daily practice in "drivotrainer" units, and three and a half weeks of actual driving in dual-control cars -- are optional. But almost sill the students take them. The course is made particularly practical through the cooperation of the Evanston police department, which provides weekly accident reports so that local .hazards can be emphasized by the instructor. Traffic and safety experts consider the Evanston program ai model that could profitably be copied by many communities. In the words of one of them, "It would be a dog-gone good thing if all 'teen-agers were trained before they were allowed behind the wheel." HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS CHANGES LOCATION Dr. J ames R. McMahon moved on March 1 from Green street to 205 W. Elm street. "Modem driving in faster, higher horse-powered cars on faster, more congested highways requires a degree of driving skill unknown a few years ago. The Institute for Safer Living says that today's young people find the best opportunity to become skilled, responsible drivers by completing a well-rounded course in driver education This Business - Farming LAMB LOAF COMBINES EASE, ECONOMY Livestock specialists from various sections of our .country have come up with some interesting and informative findings in connection with their research experiments Some of these follow: Optimum feeding of dairy cows, rather than underfeeding and especially overfeeding in the dry period, can save dairymen up to $8 per cow a year. This has, been pointed out by a.dairy specialist who says that a cow is most efficient when eating just what she needs. If her needs are exceeded there is a conversion to body fat and a resultant loss in energy. .. As a rule, cows should be put on heavy feeding about two weeks before lactation and kept there for about the first three months after calving. Roughages should be offered free choice all .the time. . Go easy on grain - practically none -- three months before calving. Gauge grain feeding during the good milking period bv physical condition of the cow and mi'k letdown. The thin cow, milking well, should be fed the most grain. To avoid a drop in milk production when shifting from corn silage to alfalfa, mnke sure that energy and protein l e v e l s a r e m a i n t a i n e d , s a y s a n other specialist. This drop is enev liable as the rumen flora adjusts to the change in rations. It can be kept to a minimum - - tlr-ee or four days - if 4 to 6-lbs more grain are fed to compensate for the lower energy in the alfalfa silage. Lambs, yeaned at twentyone days. ~ showed grealer weight gains than lambs kept on nursing, when placed in drylot and put on a complete mixed ration. This was the result of work by a Kentucky geneticist whose experiment started out as a breeding test, but turned up some valuable nutritional data. The dry-lot lambs weighed about 55-lbs. at 80 days - 4- lbs. more than the nursed lambs. The geneticist also found that the dry-lot lambs have fewer parasites than those on pasture with their dams. Range cows, especially pregnant ones, should'receive about 1-lb. of protein supplement to go along with prairie hay. Pelleted protein supplements are a 'good combination with Why not put the adventure back into meat loaf? Here's one that suggests the glaifior of the near East, a la Omar Khayyam, since it features traditional Iamb and rice, dried apricots and honey. There are some other surprises in store. To add to its interest, the meat loaf is concocted sandwich-style, so that its colorful rice and apricot fill*, ing shows off to advantage. One of the, nice things about using rice as • stuffing is the fact that it combines equally well with fruit or vegetable^ seasoning or spice and, in addition, it always has that just-right consistency. Lamb makes a pleasing variation for a meat loaf, and the final touch to the dish is provided by « drizzle of honey spread over the topw GOLDEN RICE STUFFED LAMB LOAF % cup diced celery 3 tablespoons minced onions 1 tablespoon minced parsley cup butter or margarine 2 cups cooked rice 3A cup cut dried apricots Vz teaspoon salt 14 teaspoon savory Vs teaspoon pepper 1 egg, siightly beaten cup water Yi cup crisp rice cereal, rolled Into fine crumbs IVi teaspoons salt 14 teaspoon pepper 114 pounds lean ground lamb 1 tablespoon honey Saute celery, onions, and parsley in butter or margarine until tender.
