And the aurora borealis or northern lights is one of the most colorful of these wonders E. H. Regnier, University of Illinois rural recreationist, reminds sky watchers that the typical red-glowing streaks of this display usually appear first in the northwest or north east corner of the sky. The aurora borealis makes an unscheduled, but good display after 8 p.m. and as late as 3 a.m. This phenomenon is caused by jets of protons and electrons from solar explosions colliding with molecules and atoms in the earth's magnetic field. The chemical elements in the particles determine the colors that are visible. In Illinois, swooping curved streaks, rather than straight lines, often appear in the displays. Scientific explanation of the aurora borealis should not cast aside the early legends, however. The Greeks, for example, interpreted the display as the coming of the Goddess Aurora. And Celtic stories told of merry dancers of the spirit world. Even the Indians in the Mississippi River Valley had an explanation for the lifSfets. They said they were ghosts of warriors dancing forever back and forth across the north.
