You can read a separate story about the grade school tournament which is sponsored annually by the American Legion. Ardele Oeffling brought us a message that the Johnsburg basketball team is sponsoring their second annual tournament March 27. Four teams will be entered, riames to be released next week. Minnie- Minoso would have signed his $50,000 White Sox cpntract sooner, but he had to find an English speaking friend to read it for him. Bet he can tell where, decimal points belong. Manager John Knox tells us the Shamrocks will meet next Sunday,. March 20, 1 p.m. in the old gym at McHenry High. If you would like to play ball with the Shamrocks this year, •feel welcome to attend this meeting. The Shamrocks plan to play more games this season. Saturday games and some night games will be added. The State of Illinois Department of Conservation urges one and all to feed the birds during this snow-covered season. They refer both to game birds and the little old variety found in your back yard. We _put some crusts of bread out -In our yard but have mixed feelings about our feathered friends. A couple of times they have done us wrong. Those "200" games come a dime a dozen in the classy Major League at McHenry Rec, but here are some scores that should not go past without a special tip of the bonnet. Joe Etten was in great form to lead the field with a 682 series that featured a 266 game. Hans Behnke hit 'em 244-649, S. Buenzli, 244-635, N. Dalby 247- 631 and M. Crouch 231-630. FORESTER BASKETBALL FINALS BHN6 OUT URGE CROWD FOR ANOTHBt SUCCESSFUL TOURNEY Now might be as good a time as any to mention our White $px and you mention your Cubs. But, honestly, we would just as soon win those games .by two runs instead of one.. This is the day we put on a green tie and let the world know we are Irish. Some tell us they can tell without all this decoration. Whatever the rest of the year may bring, this is "Our Day" and we plan to make the most of it. It's the day of the year when an Irish tune sounds "Sweater. Sing it in any old key - - - just sing it! Local fans turned out in large numbers to watch the 'finals of the C.O.F. state basketball tournament in the MCHS gym last Sunday and must have gone home with the feeling that St. Mary's Court had once again managed the big end in fine fashion. Ift the first championship game the oddity <pf two St. Gregory teams meeting each other was witnessed. This was in the Ranger division and proved an easy win for the No. 1 team dressed in white uniforms. This was a romp, 74 to 23. St. Gregory's also put a strong team on the floor to beat a good McHenry Senior team 57 to 42. Jim Hester scored 15 points for McHenry in this one and John Steinbach got 14. However, the winners had too much balance and pulled away with 24 points in the fourth quarter. Coach Jim Doran, who makes a habit of turning out winning teams, sent his Junior squad out to take an early lead and move along to a-34-22 win over St. Ann's of Moline. Following this game the local Viscounts color guard and bugle corps drew a big hand as they entertained the crowd. Leadership, formations, precision and enthusiasm marked the performance of this young group. Fred Meyer, the guiding star of these big C.O.F. tourneys, brought Earl Duffy (Illinois State Chief Ranger) to the mike to hand out the various trophies arid introduce the winners. And Duffy again proved he is the boy who can handle the job. The final game of the tournament saw old rivals, Johnsburg and McHenry, battling for the trophy. Johnsburg took this one 49-34 without too much trouble. Both teams had played semi-final games early in the afternoon and may have been a wee bit tired. Gene Freund sparked the McHenry team to keep the game, fairly close, but Don Bentz and Tom Oeffling each scored, 16 points to make sure of victory. 11 RANGER St. Gregory's -- White FG FT PF Corbett, R. RINKY-MNKS FALL TO SENIOR CAGERSJ8-55 Girls Win Volley- Bail Match From Women Faculty Lambert Freund Last Wednesday many creaks and groans were heard around McHenry high, not from the settling of tlie building, but from our teachers. On the previous evening, Tuesday, March 8, the high school gym was the scene of a volleyball match between the junior and senior studerit leaders and the women faculty members followed by a basketball game involving the senior boys and the men's faculty team. Age seemed to be slowly creeping up on our faculty members as the women's team dropped 2 out of 3 volleyball games and the senior boys beat the faculty 58-55 in a close game. The seniors got off to a good start in the game, taking a 17- 14 lead in the first quarter. The lead was quickly squelched, however, 4? the faculty roared back to take the second lap 17-13 and lead at the half 31-30, The two' teams shared 18 points in the third period. In the final qiiarter the faculty found it difficult to keep the pace of the seniors and dropped this period 19-15 and the game 58-55. Leading scorer for the faculty was Mr. Fulton, who proved his ability as a player as well as a coach as he poured in 24 points. Bill Oeffling and Mike Creighton each had 17 for the seniors. Credit also must be given to the cheerleaders of both teams. The seniors were cheered on by the four senior regulars of the season--Rosemary "Peach" Roti, Judy Hans, Ann Pes<?hke and Joyce Eckstein. The cheer instigators for the Rinky- Dinks, as the faculty team was called, were Miss Sturtz, Miss Scott, Miss Glabowicz, - all of the women's faculty, and Ardis May, All proceeds of the game went to the whirlpool fund and this bill w$s nearly paid off by the hiige^' turnout for the game. The annual event was again this year a big success. y«mij (55) ' &"??•' TO -FT FPTS Cuda 2 0 3 4 Falk 0 0 0 0 Fulton 9 6 4 24 Gardiner 0 0 0 0 Thomas 5 2 2 12 Mandli 2 0 4 4 Seaton 0 0 0 0 Hutchinson 5 1 4 11 Vick 0 0 0 0 Totals 23 9 17 55 Seniors (58) FG FT FPTS Olson ' 1 2 ! 5 . 4 Oeffling 6 5 3 17 Hester 3 2 0 8 Freund 2 0 2 4 Steinbach 2 4 2 8 Creighton 5 7 2 17 Totals 19 20 14 58 By Quarters Faculty Seniors 14 17 17 13 9 15--55 9 19--58 CARD OF THANKS I wish to thank every one for their ijnany kindnesses, cards, gifts,' flowers and prayers during my recent stay in the hospital.
