March 31, 1960) KNIGHT CHOICE OF DEMOCRATS IN JUDICIAL RACE At the Democratic conven tioai held in Rockford last Saturday, B. Jay Knight, a 72 year-old Rockford lawyer, was named to oppose Circuit Judge Roy J. Solfisburg of Aurora in the Sixth Supreme Court district in the June 6 election. His selection was unanimous. Judge Solfisburg was the choice of the GOP convention which met in Free port the week previous. About 400 Democratic delegates in the twelve-county district attended the convention, with no other candidates being considered. Earlier, there had been some speculation that Democrats might join disappointed Republicans in picking Charles Davis, defeated GOP candidate for re-election. Children of the Saturday morning school, which is held at the Community high school in McHenry, will conduct the greater part of the Seder service. The Jewish holiday Passover begins on the evening of April 11 with<the traditional Seder which is held in many homes. Passover (Hebrew name is Pesach) commemorates the exodus of the Israelites from ancient Egypt, where they had been held in slavery for several hundred years. Anyone desiring more information about the Seder or the Saturday morning school is asked to contact Mrs. Pearl Cooper. Reservations must be mad<; before April 2. PLAN COMMISSION MEETS Discussion of industrial development in McHenry and other future plans took up most of the McHenry Plan Commission on Monday evening of this week. A representative of Stanton & Rockwell will be present at the next meeting on April 11 to outline progress on their survey in the city. The McHenry Rotary club, the McHenry Kiwanis club and the Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon today (Thursday) at the Legion home to hear Dr. Frederic C. Jelen speak on "What Price Inflation?" Paper plates were first made f$s bafcew in 1903. Miracles are commonplace at the Museum of Science and Industry, where a dynamic fortyminute live show demonstrating the wizardry of electricity is being presented free to the public four times daily, in the Electric Theater. The purpose of the show is to demonstrate how electricity is utilized in the form of various waves: electric, radio, infra- red, visible light, ultraviolet, gamma, cosmic, and Xray. Look Mommy, Flying Saucers! In one demonstration a Museum staffer, on stage, places a pl&tter, \:eSfembling a flying saucer, above a strong magnetic field, causing it to float in midair. A circular magnetic "fence" around the saucer keeps it from flying off into the audience. Please Pass The Salt Ordinarily, children go to the store and buy a can of dried corn kernels for popping. But in the Electric TTieater, corn on the cob is used. A demonstrator holds the cob corn between high frequency radio waves and, presto, fat white kernels of corn pop high in the air, causing young mouths to water for the crunchy tidbits. What Would Betsy? Ross Say? Also featured is an American flag which has been treated with florescent dye. In ordinary light the flag looks normal, but with ultra-violet light it glows in the dark. Believe In Grosts? Equally dramatic is the "ultra- violet" or "black light" demonstration. The demonstrator turns off all the lights and tells everyone to look at his neighbor when the black light appears. Younger visitors shout with excitement as the teeth, eyes, and white clothing of their fellow spectators appear to have a luminous glow; red turns bright orange; and a small child's blond locks turn to silver threads among the gold. Beginning to See Light There are many other features to delight both young and old at the Electric Theater, such as the demonstration of the contrasts between one of the world's largest and one of its smallest electric lights. A 50,000-watt lamp, which could light up an entire city, shines in all its glory next to a tiny light no bigger than a grain of wheat. In recent years wee lights, like the latter, have been used by surgeons for internal medical operaations. Your Income Tax District Director of Internal Revenue Harold R. All of the Chicago District, reminded housewives who employ domestic Workers of their responsibilities with respect to the reporting and payment of social security taxes for their employees. Mr. All Explained, if you employ a maid, cook or any other worker who performs services of a household nature, in or about your private home.' you should apply the $50 a quarter test to determine whether the social security tax applies. The calendar year is divided into four quarters'; the first quarter began Jan. 1. Mr. All continued, the combined amount of employee tax and employer tax is 6 percent effective Jan. 1, 1960. The employer should deduct 3 percent of the employees's cash wages and add an equal amount to it. If the employer prefers to pay the employee tax without deducting it from the employees's wages, he may do so. Near the end of each calendar quarter, the district director will mail a Form 942. called the "Employer's Quarterly Tax Return for Household Employees (for Social Security)" to each household employer on his mailing list. If taxes are due from a household employer not on the mailing list, the employer should ask the District Director for Form 942 and ask to be added to his mailing list, Mr. All said. An easy to read pamphlet, Circular H, providing information and instructions for employers of household help, may be obtained by writingjto Tar Forms P. O. Box 743, Chicago 90, Illinois, Mr. All concluded, COURT BRIEFS A local driver was fined $10 in court Saturday for driving with an expired driver's license.
