Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER © Thursday* May 5# I96ff £cL*tJ& U/id&AhJ "So I HEAR" It was Sandy Jones, one of McHenry's best sports followers, on the other end of the line and she was wondering how come we didn't give attention to track meets on this sport page. It struck us that either San-, dy hadn't been reading the sport page or we had a lapse of memory. Anyhow, we recovered to explain that separate reports have been appearing on this page week after week. If Sandy had missed the boat in not seeing a 24 point, (that's big) head over a track story last week, she was quick enough to flatter us with, "Oh, but we'd rather read it in your column". for most leagues so we would like a final report from secretaries next week if possible. Crystal Lake proudly tells us they have a tennis club. Two lighted courts aire to be built on Veterans Acres. Membership is open to adults, 18 years of age or older. That should get our "Brenda" into the group. We welcome Jean Weyland to the sports page this week. Jean will write the "Divot Dolls" column previously written by Verona Kent. As we stated earlier this spring, track is staging a great comeback at MCHS and we are highly in favor of the program. It gives many boys a chance to compete. The fact that track meets do not draw'large crowds can be attributed to the fact that they are held in the afternoon when most people are working. Track is no different than any other sport in this respect. :: We well remember when high school football was played in the afternoon and you would find only a handful of fans, aside from the student ^ody, watching ^e games. Came the lights and came the crowds! When day is done, sports fans turn out to watch their favorites. Major league baseball attracts thousands who could seldom get away from work in the afternoon. After dinner. Dad decided on a man-to-man taiK with his young son. "How did things go at school today. Tommy?" he began. "Were you a good boy?"1 "Sure," replied the youngster. "How much trouble can I get into standing in the corner all day?" SHAMROCKS WIN OPENER t TO 3 Team Travels To Crystal Lake Next Sunday Afternoon By Mickey Schaefer McHenry Country Club News By Jack Buckle And, we think county league baseball would stage a great comeback )f somebody could find a pot of gold to pay for lighting systems. |»A1LY PINUPS: resistance Ttbk^ changea^ uie fourse of rivers and rovers, •f. I Doing simple things perfect- "fy may prime you to do difficult things easily. i ANONYMOUS A combination of cold, stiff breezes and tournament pressure produced something other than top-flight golf scores last Sunday as the first round of the Director's tourney got underway. I'm sure-most of the players will appreciate the fact that I won't mention their actual scores. From what I can ! gather, the best round of the | day was Vale Adams' 78, and ' even that wasn't anywhere , near what Vale is capable of i shooting. Low net winners in | Class A were Adams, first; i Sayler and G. Johnson tied for i second. The McHenry Shamrocks defeated Algonquih 6-3 in their league opener here last Sun^- day. Jim> Wickencamp pitched the first seven innings giving up 2 runs, ribne. of them being earned. Gene Frfcund pitched, the" final two iijnings giving up one run. which was unearned. Jack Schaefer, and Roger Benson paced; our attack with 5 hits between them. Jack had three singles in five trips to the plate, while Benson had 2 hits and a walk in five trips. We had two extra 1»ase hits, doubles by Roger Benson and Gene Freund. The Shamrocks scored their first run in the first when Schaefer led off with a bunt single and was forced at second on Gene Freund's ground ball. Denny Freund was safe on an e r r o r , and R o g e r B e n s o n walked to load the bases with one out. Gene Freund scored our first riin when Bob Mathews grounded to first. We scored our second run in the fourth on walks to Baker and Pierce and the run producing single by Schaefer. We scored our third run in the sixth when Joe Stanek walked, stole second and rode home on a single by Chuck Pierce. The Shamrocks scored two more in the seventh when Denny Freund led off with a single and went to second on Benson's long ball. Bob Mathews brought Freund home with a single. Joe Stanek walked and Herb Baker singled to load" the bases. We scored our final run in the inning on Pferce's grounder to second. We scored our final run iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimniiiiniiiiniNuiHin FOX VALLEY RIDERS IllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllltlillltllllllllllilllUlilU We would' like to take this opportunity to thank1 ; Mayor George Freund of McHenry, for the use of his flat • bed truck. The truck was of great help in hauling lumber to our track. This lumber will be used in creating better spectator facilities. Mental Health Week start* ing May 1, will mark the beginning of our ticket sales for our first scrambles race. The profits of this. scrambles race will go to the Mental Health Center of McHenry County. Tickets may be obtained from any Fox Valley Rider. The scrambles will be held on Sunday, May 22. MEET MAY 13 Boys From Eleven Schools Shoot For Trip To Champaign by Janice Huff Walking off .wUK.jmv eiShth whe^. Denny mors in Class B were Bruns was safe on an error and came in to score on a double by Roger Benson. Next Sunday the Shamrocks will travel to Crystal Lake to play our second league game of the season. The Shamrocks league record now is one victory and no losses.. flCKIJP: « Just about the time you {each your kids you can't put Store in a container than it can hold, along comes some woman in slacks. Saw "Muggs" this week. Had to go to see him, of course. He doesn't change. Seemed real frieased to read about the Plaindealer going to move closer to "Skid Row" and wanted to know if we would have an Office in the new building. Office? Hells bells, we've been in fcnd out of the Plaindealer door ivith copy for 25 years and they iiaven't even offered us a Chair! ; Last Friday the Chicago paily News spread a lot of ink £tbout "Big Niek" Etten whom swe have watched with interest. ick is a candidate for the ews Youth Achievement iAward.,.Typical of Nick's modesty was his reply to mention Jim. my wife is deathly ill." W( s honors and Consago. Following are the results of the first round of match play: Class A: G. Johnson beat F. Johnson; Adams beat Wilkinson; Rourke beat Seepe; Say- Ifer beat Knaack; Brown beat Moss; Varese beat Kadisak. By mutual agreement Buss will play Bennett on Wednesday and Jackson will play Overton on Saturday. Class B: Phelan beat Fitz- Gerald; Hughes, beat Tonyan; V. Weyland beat D. Johnson; Etton beat Wattles; Simon beat Funk; Consago beat Hofman; Gac beat Rode. By mutual agreement Bruns will play Dahl on Wednesday. Don Johnson tells me he hopes they change the rules of golf soon so that the high scores will win the prizes instead of the low ones. I know just how he feels. I took a good look at Vince Weyland Sunday. and the combination of construction work and golf has sure given that boy a real tan. Matt Hofmann is anxious to get the final tally on the outcome of the recent dinner, so anyone who still has tickets or ticket money to turn in, please get in touch with Matt at once. Thanks. Overheard on the course on a recent Sunday morning: "We're playing so badly today, Charlie, that I think we probably should have gone to church." "I wouldn't have been able to go anyway, Algonqttin (3) On May 13 eleven high schools will come to McHenry Country Club. There will be approximately s e v e n t y-five boys who will try to qualify for the state championship in Champaign the following week. Teams coming to McHenry are Belvidere, Crystal Lake, Grayslake, Warren, Libertyville, M c H e n r y , N o r t h C h i c a g o , Rockford East, Roekford (Harlem), Waukegan and Zion. Of this group Waukegan, Crystal Lake and Rockford East seem to have the strongest entries. The McHenry team still has not shown its top form. Gary Adams is finally coming into his own when he shot a 36, even par, in a match against Woodstock. Bob Vaupell, a slow starter, should be coming into form by tournament time. He is capable of shooting in the high 70's. Bob Beckenbaugh must clear up mistakes by next week. He also can shoot in the high JO's, low 80's. Steve Fike has not been consistent, but Is capable of shooting in the mid 80's. Come out and see some good high school golfers on May 13 at McHcnry Country club at 9 a.m. TRACK TEAM OF McHENRY HIGH WINS BIG MEET Beat Woodstock And Harvard Boys In Triangular Event Last Thursday (April 28) a triangular track meet was held with WoodstOtk and Harvard at McHenry. This Sunday the Tigers, defending champions, will travel to Elgin to play the Elgin Arrows. This will officially open the County League for the Tigers. The Arrows who have a strong team are expected to put up a good figfrt and this should prove to be an interesting game. Everyone is invited to attend.
