Officials of McHenry hospital provided the following informative facts on the nation's hospitals: Nearly 22 million persons were confined to the nation's hospitals for some period of time in 1958. This amounted to one out of every eight persons in the United States. More than 277,000 professional nurses were employed full-time in hospitals in 1958. Nearly 65,000 more nurses were employed on a part-time basis. Births reported by hospitals reached 3.7 million in 1958. The number of babies born in U.S. hospitals has quadrupled over the last 20 years. Maternity cases each year account for one-sixth of all hospital admissions. Employee wages and salaries paid by U.S. hospitals (including government) amounted to over four and one-half billion dollars in 1958.
