Sept. 22, 1960) ADOPT NEW PROCEDURE FOR SERVICE AGE MEN New procedures to identify men who would be qualified for military service in an emergency, but who are not acceptable under current Armed Forces standards, have been nut into effect by Illinois Selective Service local boards according to Willard A. Manning, slate director of Selective Service. The new procedures have been adopted on a national basis. These men will no longer be placed in Class IV-F (physically. mentally or morally unfit). It is expected that Selective regulations will be amended in the near future to provide a new classification for men not I accented under current stand- j ards but who are available and would be qualified in an em- j ergency. | Until the regulations are changed, those men the local 1 boards find would qualify in an | emergency will keep their current cla s s i fi c a t i o n. Local boards will continue to place in Class TV-F those men the Armed Forces are unlikely to need even in an emergency. | Armed Forces Examining 1 Stations will adapt their pro- j cedures to report to local boards after examination i whether a man is currently qualified, may be qualified in an emergency, or is unlikely to be needed for military service even in an emergency. Current standards of acceptability have resulted in high rejection rates. Many men not being accepted today and who are now classified IV-F would have to serve in an emergency under altered standards. Identification in advance of men qualified in an emergency will permit the local boards to save time in meeting mobilization requirements. U.S. SAVINGS BONDS, ARE YOUR GUARANTEE OF SECURITY-BUY REGULARL Y aa^old THEM FOR BETTER RETURN/ J KNOW YOUR mm American pork producers" have" a big merchandising job-1 to do. Too much of our pork is overfat and consumers do not like overfat pork. If we produce a good meaty pork, we can help hold pork's share of the consumer's meat dollar. In 1947 consumers spent about 3 per cent of disposable income for pork. In 1959 they spent only 1.8 per cent -- a decrease of more than one third. The proportion spent for beef increased during this same period. This means thST* consumers were "voting" for beef -- voting with their dollars. • Hog prices look good for the rest of 1960. But this is ho time - to slack up on a meat-type hog improvement program. If, you select meat-type boars, and gilts, you can go a long way toward helping sell better pork in the consumer market. Animal husbandry departments In all and grant colleges are convinced that meaty-type hogs are as economical to produce as any other kind. Livestock markets are consistently paying more for meaty hogs than for/the overfat kind. Producers who continue to emphasize the production of meat-type hogs will be well paid for their efforts. \ ' * KV* THOMAS TRUXTON WAS AN OID "SEA DOG" WHO RAN AWAY TO SEA AT 12 AND SHIPPED AO. A little clean up can head off expensive losses. Have you picked up the wire ends, nails, broken bottles, paint cans, old batteries, and other means of animals being injured, iwisoned or damaged because of these hazards? Have you checked your pasture for leg breaking holes, broken fences, poisonous weeds and other causes of injury? Sharp horns cause trouble and unvaccinated animals are likely to become infected. Is your clean available water requirement solved, and do you have plans to lessen your fly problem? Yes, a little cleaning up can prevent financial loss. A sickle made of flint chips glued together was excavated near Mosul, Iran, recently. (Mosul gave its name to muslin, a local cloth for centuries.)
