Carpentier warned. They must apply for and be granted a new license before they may legally operate a motor vehicle, Mr. Carpentier said. Anyone whose license has been revoked and Who continues to drive, either before or after the end of a year without obtaining a new license is guilty of driving while the license or privilege to drive is revoked, an offense which carries a mandatory seven day jail term, Secretary Carpentier said. Mr. Carpentier said it has come to his attention , that to some cases judges have dismissed charges of driving while revoked when the surest occurred more than a year after the date of the revocation . Secretary Carpentier said he had consulted the office of Attorney General William L. Guild about this type of situation. In his official opinion, General Guild ruled that "the mere passage of time is never in and of itself a defense to a charge based on .operating a motor vehicle where the 'operator's or chauffeur's license or permit or privilege so to do' has been revoked," Mr. Carpentier said. Still quoting General Guild's opinion. Secretary Carpentier said, "if the cause for which the individual's operator's or chauffeur's license was revoked can not be removed, he is still authorized to apply for a new license after the expiration of one year from the date of the revocation. The Secretary of State in such a case is not required to grant the license merely because the year has expired. He must first determine whether or not the granting of the license will endanger the public safety or welfare, such determination being based on an investigation as required by Section 6- 208 (b) of the Drivers License Law." According to Mrs. Gertrude Gobbel, member of the University of Illinois child development laboratory staff, this is one of the best ways to insure good service from your sitter and be able to feel at ease while you're away. Since children and situations vary, be sure to tell the sitter about any special conditions that exist. They might include such things as what medicine to give Junior, what noises to expect in the house, how to work special appliances and wat to do with Homer, the pet what to do with Homer, the pet dog. Then run down the list of >other information you think the sitter will need in order to care adequately for your children. Here are some of the facts to include in this "preptalk" before you leave: (1) where and how to reach parents in emergencies; (2) what to do in case of illness, accident, fire or other emergency; (3) when to expect parents back; (4) what schedule to follow for children's care; (5) where to find changes of clothing and bedding; and (6) how to find and use extra fuses, light switches and thermostat. Also spell out what arrangements have been made for the sitter's comfort. These include such things as snacks, book and magazines and use of radio, record player or TV. Don't forget to tell the sitter your wishes about entertaining others, handling callers and locking doors while you are gone. Legal* 4.100 CHILDREN ACCIDENTAL POISON VICTIMS THIS YEAR LOW TEMPERATURE IS NEEDED FOR APPLE STORAGE More than 4,100 reported cases of accidental poisoning a^ong children up to age IS occurred' in the' s^ate during1 the first eight months of this year. For the same period of 1 9 5 9 , c a s e s r e p o r t e d were slightly more than 3,300, according to Dr. L. L. Fatherree. director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. Each year, fifty to sixty of these young victims are needlessly dying, Dr. Fatherree said. Of the 4,100 cases this year, almost 3,900 occurred in children up to and including age 4, with the highest percentage among the 2-year-olds. "About one-third of all-poisoning cases in this "^ery young age group are the result of aspirin or aspirin products," said Dr. Fatherree. "This is tragedy bred by the carelessness of adults. All drugs should be stored well out of children's reach." A new state law, administered by the Public Health Department, demands that all hazardous substances intended or suitable for use in households be plainly labeled to show the hazard. Household preparation^--rank second in causes of i^ccideMal poisoning among children. Each of) the sixty-twoN;on trol cehters throughout the state maintMns-^up-to-date reference materials on ingredients incorporated in hundreds of thousand of commercial products, and rec o m m e n d s treatment methods. The goal is to have a center within every twenty-five to thirty mile radius. AUTUMN LEAVES CAN BE PRETTY, ALSO HAZARDOUS To keep fall-harvested apples at their best for winter use, store them in a place with a low temperature and high humidity. According to Frank Owen, University of Illinois fruit crops specialist, a temperature of about 32 degrees F. and a humidity ranging from 90 to 95 percent ape best. The low temperature slows down ripening and prevents the apple from getting overripe. The high humidity keeps it from shriveling. Your home refrigerator offers good storage conditions for periods up to three months if room is availably. The average refrigerator maintains a temperature of about 39 degrees F. and a relative humidity of at least 85 percent. The hydrator often holds at 95 perpanf hwiiidiiy. Autumn leaves are pretty on the trees, but they can be pretty dangerous on the roadway, motorists were warned today by Robert A. Campbell, coordinator of the Illinois Division of Traffic Safety. "Leaves turning all colors of the rainbow provide color galore in the autumnal foliage along country highways and some city streets, but falling to earth they become a threat to motoring safety in several ways," he pointed out. "Children love to play in piles of raked-up leaves, sometimes even hiding in a large pile of leaves," he said. "This fun-loving activity can be of. danger to motorists in parking in front of their homes and to the operators of delivery trucks." Motorists are advised to he extra careful at this time when travelling along tree-linea streets or highways.
