GARDEN CLUBS PLACE EMPHASIS ON CONSERVATION Two important meetings of the McHenry Garden club have been held in the past month. The first, at the home of Mrs. Theodore Arvidson, was noteworthy because of the presentation by Mrs. Clinton Martin of a carefully prepared, interesting and scientific paper on the derivation of numerous plants, trees and shrubs that members had assumed to be indigenous to this country but actually originated in distant lands. Mrs. Arvidson's charming home and hospitality made an attractive background/for this educational afternoon. At the second meeting, Mrs. Vaughn Jones and Mrs. 3£rik Braenne gave a complete report on their attendance" at the state meeting of the Garden Club of Illinois. The entire two days from early morning until bedtime were ' consumed with a rigorous program on the various phases of conservation, yet the schedule was so well planned that the interest of the members never flagged. The Garden Club of Illinois is enlarging and changing its scope somewhat There will be less "emphasis on the merely attractive aspects of gardening and a wider interest' in conservation. This will encompass the study of "the food potentialities of various weed? and wild flowers and the designation of tracts of land for forest preserves to prevent heavy concentrations of population lacking areas for recreation and relaxation of the kind that comes only in a natural setting.
