oPage Four THE KcHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, Deceniher 1,1960 SO I HEAR ... M After roaring through a ^decisive victory over Grant, ,)f3the McHenry Warrior basket- ball varsity had a devil's own time coming through with a -56-40 win over the Woodstock FSlue Streaks last week. I Maybe this wasn't too much 1 of a surprise to McHenry fans | who have followed the Waril riors through the years. We | have seen several real good | McHenry teams play their | poorest games on the Wood- • stock floor. In this game neither team | could get hot on shots until s the Warriors finally got around 5 to setting up plays in the last 5 quarter. PONY LEAGUE SPONSORS BENEFIT DANCE AT V.F.W. CLUBHOUSE SATURDAY NIGHT OF THIS WEEK The McHenry P< • McHenry held only a meager ? lead of five points at the end 2 of three quarters as Wood- 3 stock's zone defense seemed to 5 keep the game under control. 3 * ; The Warriors won the game, £ but will have to play a differ- • ent brand of basketball this I coming weekend. They travel t to Zion Friday night, to play a • good club that threw a real scare into favored Libertyville. r 1 On Saturday night the Warf riors will be at home to the • Barrington Broncos, who didn't i kick their heels too high in 5 losing 80 to 60 to the classy | Crystal Lake five. 1 Of course, a team that can 2 score 60 points against the ball 3 hawks from Crystal Lake must s have something. 8 And, did you notice that Arlington Heights beat Elgin quite handily? There may be j^Bome changes at the top this jjf year. J Whether you want to dance s or not, why not (PLEASE) get | a crowd together and attend 3 the Pony League benefit dance • at the V.F.W. Clubhouse Sat- | urday night. S Haying been closely, assocj- ? ated with -several r^ySattcfe | programs for years, we can tell 2 y°u it is one heckava job to get ' enough money together to keep | our plans for youths in action. | It is easy to sit back and | let the other fellow take the > work and worry. Just a small ; bit of help from nfany of you g will do the trick. j We are sincere in asking you 1 good sports to show up at the g V.F.W. Saturday night and 3 help put this event over the 5 'top. A few people have done a 2 lot. Many people, doing just a 5 little, can accomplish much t more. 5 Take a look in Huppy & « Leo's window this week and S you will get an idea of good | fortune that may befall you if f you attend this Pony League £ benefit. It's BIG! s . | Of course, if it is impossible for you to attend, please don't be bashful about phoning us aX for a ticket. | Now, here is something you | can't go wrong in helping. f Would we give it a line or two? i You bet we would. S The McHenry County Worn- | en's Division of Cerebral Palsy | will sponsor a "Bowling Sweep- | stakes" at McHenry Recrea- J tion Dec. 5 - Dec. 9, 1960. En- | try fees are small and proper ? recognition will go to those i persons bowling the most pins I over their average. | These ladies are doing great Jf work for children who need a 8 helping hand. You can have 5 fun while helping. cHenry Pony League officers and boosters are going all out this week in preparation for a gay old time at a big benefit dance which they are sponsoring at the V.F.W. Clubhouse on Saturday night of this week. While a bushel of fun is being planned for all who attend this dance, let it be said here and now that your attendance is needed to take the league's finances out of the red and assure the young ball players that the program will continue next season. Pony League baseball cannot survive on gate receipts or the usual pass the hat plan. Thus, it becomes necessary tor the officers to ask the help of many people. A large crowd, each doing a small part while having a good time, is the sweet way to make this event a success and make sure the young boys will be able to continue this recreational program. Several workers have tickets. If you cannot attend, the way is open for you to make a small donation to a cause important to all. 'Protect Our Nation's Youth." MCHS WRESTLING SQUAD BEATS BLUE DEVILS AT WARREN by Bill Anderson The Warrior wrestling squad travelled to Warren on Tuesday, Nov. 22, to win their opening match against the Blue Devils. The final score was 34- 16. Ken Lishamer (112 lbs), Bill Tychewicz (127 lbs.), Rich Mercure (145 lbs.), Jim Templeman (180 lbs.) and Wayne L a t i m e r ( h e a v y w e i g h t ) a l l pinned their opponents to win 5 points each for the team. Dan Kinnerk (120 lbs.), cisions to secure 3 points each for the team. Schmitt (95 lbs.), Sorensen (103 lbs.), Bauer (133 lbs.) and Hansen (138 lbs.) lost after wrestling very good matches. Tuesday, Nov. 29, Grayslake came to McHenry to meet the Warriors. Tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 2, Dundee will challenge the Warrior wrestlers here in McHenry. The match will be held in the gym at 7 p.m. McHENRY WARRIORS WIN 56 TO 40 OVER WOODSTOCK TEAM After three slow periods on the Woodstock floor last Wednesday night, the McHenry Warriors came to life and beat the Blue Streaks 56 to 40. Paul Morenz again led the scoring with 21 points. Tom Creighton had fouls counting up too fast and had to be yanked in the second quarter. He then came back in the last half to spark the team with four baskets before the whistle tooted his fifth foul. Harry May set up some plays in the last period to bring out class so lacking earlier in the game. McHenry Warriors (56) . F.G. F.T. F. T. Creighton 5 1 5 P. Morenz 8 5 2 B. Vaupell 4 2 4 B. Outscored in the field goal department, Johnsburg sank 19 of 24 free throw' attempts while Woodstock hit only 14 out of 22. J>on Bentz again led the winners with 31 points on 11 field goals and 9 free throws in 10 attempts. Bill Oeffling again proved a good point getter with 14 points while Kurtz led the losers with 22. Trailing 51 - 42 at the end of three quarters, Woodstock put on a strong finish with 28 points in the final period. It was a great try, but too little, too late. • "DAILY PINUPS: £ Dim unto others as you'd 5 have them dim unto you; your i car will last longer and you 1 may too. 3 Humans feud and disagree, S but you'll never find a fence 3 around a cocoanut tree. The competitive riders welcome even more competition. This close competition, especially in the 50 lap Marathon, provides a good days entertainment for spectators. Plans are being made to further improve our track, not just fo r the riders, but for the spectators also. Seating facilities and improved refreshment service are in the making. Since these events are held in the McHenry County, the public is invited to attend our meetings. They are held at 7:30, Wednesday nights, at the Raven's farm.
