NOTIFICATION OF LICENSE DEADLINE CEASES THIS YEAR Illinois motorists will not be notified personally of the approach of the Nov. 1 license plate reassignment deadline in the future, Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier said this week. The practice of notifying the holders oi the first 50,000 numbers will also be discontinued, he said. "I have never been entirely satisfied that notifying the holders of the first 50,000 licenses was quite fair to all motorists, but now, with the tremendous growth of reassignment possibilities, it will serve no further useful purpose," Secretary Carpentier said. The adoption ol the letterdigit numbering system for all numbers in excess of 999.999 has resulted in the creation of many thousands of combinations having special significance to certain individuals, but which are not readily recognizable cs such, Mr. Carpenier said. This, he continued, makes it impossible to determine which numbers are reassignment possibilities. The only other alternative would be to notify all of the almost 3.5 million passenger car owners, an undertakine which would be far too expensive, Secretary Carpentier said. Mr. Carpentier said his office will request the cooperation of all communications media in an effort to remind motorists of the reassignment period next fall. Under the law, motorists are entitled to reassignment of their license numbers if application is made prior to Nov. 1 and the request is made, Secretary Carpentier pointed out.
