V THE McHENRY PXJUNDEALER van**. $m 27. lgr New SSAC Officers Elected On April 15, the following members were elected to govern the Shores Social and Athletic club for the next twelve months: Clarence Mueller, president; Chuck Whitney, vice-president; Ed Olbinskl, treasurer; Bill Dostal, secretary. Ken Schopp was elected to be a member of the board ol directors Which consists of three members. The older members of the board are Charles Lindwall and Sam Ziemet. The next monthly meeting of the club is scheduled for May 20 and will be held at the home of Harry Tiggemann, 315 Grand View drive. A visit to a military installation on May 20, which is Armed Forces Day, is in the planning stage. Members of the SSAC will be contacted as soon as details for thfe trip are completed. Ed Vilim was passing out cigars to neighbors and friends last week. The occasion was the birth of a daughter, Deborah Marie, born at eleven a.m. on April 18. The new arrival weighed in at 8 lbs., 8 ozs. Now the Vilim family consists of mother, dad and three daughters. The stork also stopped at the home of Bill and Joyce Pinkonsly, Jr., on April 14 and left a little bundle- Her name is Bonnie Jo and she weighed in at 5 lbs., 13 ozs. Little brother, Billy, will now have a playmate. ^ Hi Neighbor As the wheel of chance stops turning, tfie next home for our weekly visit is indicated. The Muellers over on Terrace Drive are our hosts for today. When they came to the Shores in June, 1958, the family group consisted of Clarence and Irene Mueller and their three children, Jerry, Patricia and Robert. Jerry, who reached his twenty-first birthday last February, is now serving with the U.S. Navy and is presently stationed at the Naval Air Testing Center, Patuxent River, Md. He left in June, 1959, for a four year hitch. It's too early to say whether or not it will be .a career. Dad Clarence commutes to Chicago where he serves as a member of the American Meat Institute. However, early departures and late returns doesn't deter him from active participation in community affairs. He did an outstanding job as chairman of the publicity committee for MSC during 1960 and is currently a member of the board of directors of the club. He "was one of the founders of the SSAC and has just been elected to the presidency of the organization. Irene hds been active in social and civic affairs and in addition to her efforts on many committees, served as corresponding secretary of the MS'." during I960. She is a member of the St. Patrick's Mothers club and also belongs to the Altar and Rosary sodality. All this, in addition of course; to her big job as manager cf the Mueller household. Daughter, Pat, who will be fourteen in November, is. a student at St. Patrick's and is looking forward to the big milestone in a young ladies life. That is starting high school in September. In the meantime, her activities include dancing instruction and baby-sitting. ( no charge for this commercial?) Robert, or Robbie as he is known to his pals, is just 6 and right now Robbie's plans include becoming a "MARINE". The best of luck to this happy family and our good neighbors. pave Addante also celebrates his birthday on this day. Best wishes to Betty Dobbertin on April 30 and to Charles Geds on May 1. Wednesday, May 3; Pat Ruemelin will celebrate her birthday. Best birthday wishes to Capt. John Milled, USN, on May 4. Loss Our condolences are extended to Charles Wagner on the loss of his brother who passed away recently. Anniversaries George and Donna Gunder will celebrate their anniversary on April 28. Also a fyappy anniversary is in order to Jerry and Vi Morris on April 29. Sick List The Duncans are ok now after a bout with the flu last month. Willie Coates is now at home recuperating after eye surgery. Birthdays Happy birthday to little Caryn Schmitt who will be all of 4 .years old on April 29. Social Events Ellen Duncan entertained a group of twelve ladies on Tuesday, April 18 with a luncheon and card party. The lucky ladies holding high scores received prizes. "Buttons" Duncan was there to say hello to everyone. On April 19 twenty ladies from McHenry Shores with their guests attended a dessert luncheon and card party given by the McHenry Women's club at the V.F.W. Some of the fortunate ones to receive a prize w e r e I r e n e M u e l l e r , R u t h Dodge, Alice McKelly, Nell Rode and Mildred Snively. Table prizes were also awarded to those having the highest score at their tables. Bea Mac- Callum, Marge Hicks and Leona Wagner won the honors. I r e n e M u e l l e r e n t e r t a i n e d her regular card playing ladies last Tuesday. Those on hand to enjoy Irene's latest culinary dish were Loretta Ramage, Julie Zeimet and Evelyn Tanner. The George Bartcsek family of Cicero visited the Valeks Sunday. The unexpected snowstorm prevented them from driving back home. Extra sleeping facilities were made available and 4 year old Joe Valek thought this was fun. In Closing Don't wait for our reporters to call you for news, beat them to the deadline, Thursday noon of each week, and call them, THANK YOU. WARM PUTTY When replacing a broken window in cold weather, heat a brick and lay putty on it while working. This keeps the putty soft and oily. PREVENTS RUSTING Apply a thin coat of paste wax to metal parts and handles of hand tools used outdoors to prevent rusting and keep tools free of dirt. STATE OF ILLINOIS, ss. STORY OF PALMS INTERESTING TO LQCAL RESIDENT by Marie Schaettjgen If you have wondered, as I have many times, from whence come the palms used in so many churches on Palrp Sunday, perhaps this information found in the magazine section of a Florida newspaper will satisfy your quest for information. In the central part of Florida, in the Lake Okeechobee region, there Is a man, Parker Abney, who might be known as the Palm Sunday man. Mr. Abney has an unusual business project-- he ships annually 600,000 palm sprays"for use in' Churches throughout the United States grid Canada. The sprays, or buds of the cabbage palm, are found in quantities only in the Okeechobee region The cutting of the palms is done exclusively by Seminole Indian squaws" on the Brighton reservations west. of the lake. This operation requires about ninety days. During this time Mr. Abney and his crew work long hours packing and shipping tha, palms. Many of the Seminoles in this region are now Christians, but regardless of their religious beliefs they have faith in Mr. Abney. There is a mutual trust between them. The palms are tied in bundles of twenty-five, but are never recounted once they have been tied. If there is a discrepancy* Mr. Abney assumes the error to have been made by Ms own crew. Frequently the Indians show their complete trust in Mr. Abney by leaving their palms neatly stacked with a slip of paper indicating the number of bundles. They know he will not cheat them. If his truckers arrive at a different figure he takes the count given by the Indians. Even though Mr. Abney does not have orders for all of ft#' palms, be nevertheless buy? their entire output. Mr. Abney; charitably, sees to it thaVia^ churches in the Okeechobee jarea receive palms free of The Palm commemorates the life of Christ.Cutting the paints does not injure the palm trees. New shoots appear within tltfj)- ty days, which seems to fulfill the promise of eternal lifji promised to all men by Christ. One cubic foot of wa^er weighs 1,000 ounces.
