Page Four THE BCcBENftr PLAINDEALER Thursday, August 3, 19& Wa&Ju SO I HEAR... way it is given, but how it is returned. We ducked out for a few days vacation last week without saying much to anybody. Hut. our on-the-ball Assistant Shorts Editor (Marie) caught up to our whereabouts and let our readers know. Hot air can take a balloon up. but somehow can't keep it there. Riding, the train from Crystal Lake to Chicago, with the usual newspaper to read, we noted two men in the seat in ! i v>nt of us and two women just ^behind us. Then there was the unseasoned traveler who thought an ocean swell was a sophisticated shipmate. SOFTBALL NOTES There are instances wh^re a case was made out of a pint. Those two men started out their conversation in high gear and went strong for awhile. Pn>t DesPlaines they were out of gas and searching for someilimg to talk about. Kindness is sensitive; it goes only where.it is welcomed, and stays where it is wanted. The two women in back of us started out in high gear v.nh their visit and picked up speed all the way. Chicago c.inie all too soon for them. (iiiess we men just lack imacination and ability to elaborate on subjects. Our plane ride to New Mexico was very smooth except for a few bumps through the mountain pass. The only hardship was the rule that you can't smoke cigars on the plane. The hostess brought us some cigarettes and we didn't toll her we hadn't tackled more than three of them in all the years since the early ti.iys when corn silk constituted the makin's. After seeing some nice coun- 11 > and plenty of wide open si iaces. we decided that McHenry County is for us. When we arrived, the temperature was only 86 degrees and people were remarking about the cool weather. One newspaper apoligized for the cool spell, adding that the average had been good. They explain their dry heat as being comfortable. Guess they couldn't take our humidity. When we left for home the humidity was 18r'r. When we arrived home it was 65r'r, a little on the sticky side. Personal balance is the bonus** that places mind over matter. Winning Pitcher: Rick Justen Sunday, July 30: All games were postponed because of rain. Tom Blake and Ken Frost led the home run parade with 6 each. Standings W L Sox 8 3 Cards 7 4 Braves 6 6 Giants 2 10 A tough 10-game schedule against high schools from four states confronts Marian Central Catholic high school's veteran football squad. Coach Tom Parsley, athletic director at the county-wide parochial high school, today announced the unusual schedule, a card that includes games against teams from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana. The team is ranging in all directions for its grid foes to stimulate interest among fans by bringing tough rivals into the Marian camp. A new school with 1,400 students at Gary, Indiana, for example, has been added to the card. Walhert of Dubuque, Iowa comes to Marian in November -- a four-year-old school with 1,700 students. Marian expects to have over 700 students and will be filled to capacity this fall. "We will have 21 players returning from last years varsity roster. We expect good help from such sophomores as Pete Parker and Ron Reckamp. So we should line up strong foes to give our team a good test and to challenge them to do their best." Play Woodstock High The card is also noteworthy in that it matches the Hurricanes against Woodstock Community high school, first gridiron clash between the two Woodstock-based schools. This will be the opening game for both schools, set at present for Friday, September 15 on the WCHS gridiron. The schedule does include two familiar foes, teams that were longtime rivals of St. Mary's of Woodstock before the Irish bowed in favor of Marian. The familiar schools are Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst and St. Edward of Elgin. Encouraging Parsley, former Crystal Lake star, to seek a strong schedule is the return of veteran quarterbacks Mike Purvey and Bill Riley. Parsley frankly sees problems at only one position -- the ends. Graduation claimed three ends and he tentatively plans to shift; Ed Crowley, fleet-footed endj to halfback. The complete 1961 schedule: Sept. 15 -- Woodstock at Woodstock, 8 p.m. Sept. 23 -- Immaculate Conception (Elmhurst) at Woodstock 8 p.m. I 2W Left to right: Vale Adams, Eddie Buss, George Yorgan and Harold Jensen. From the above finalists. Vale Adams emerged as the 1961 club champion at McHenry Country club. Harold Jensen came through as the handicap champ of the season. Eddie Buss was runner-up' to Adams and George Yorgan, runner-up.< to Jensen. McHenry participating must sign up by August 10.
