Laura Sherman Observes Birthday Belying her eighty-five years was Mrs. Laura Sherman as she observed the birthday anniversary on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when she was honored at a surprise gathering at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lon Smith, on Golf View Terrace, where she was a luncheon guest. A pleasant afternoon was spent in visiting, after which ice cream and birthday cake were served. The guest of honor was the recipient of many cards and gifts from her friends and family. Entertain On 25th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Gus Freund entertained twenty-one guests for dinner at the McHenry Country club on Sunday, Sept. 17, in observance of their twentyfifth wedding anniversary. Clipped Wings To Open Season The members of the Chicago chapter of Clipped Wings, stewardess alumnae group, will begin the new season on Sept. 1 with a 12:30 p.m. luncheon meeting in Elmwood Park. Mrs. Lloyd Sheffel from the Austin Special school, Chicago, will speak about the current and future programs planned for the school. This training and education center for the mentally retarded is a local philanthropy of Clipped Wings. Plans for a winter benefit fashion show and for the national Clipped Wings convention to be held in Chicago in 1962 will be previewed. COUNTY HOSTS DISTRICT HOME BUREAU MEETING Showers Hoitor Miss Margie Freund Miss Margie Freund, whose marriage to Marvin Rooney of Crystal Lake will take place next Saturday, Sept. 23, has been guest of honor at four showers. The first, a miscellaneous shower, was given at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Edith Egner, in Elgin, with five other aunts and their families as guests. Former classmates and coworkers at the McHenry hospital were entertained at ano t h e r m i s c e l l a n e o u s s h o w e r given at the home of Miss Jean O'Brian, with Mrs. Ann Lalur of Woodstock assisting. Members of the Freund family made up the gathering at a personal shower at the Richard Frett home in Crystal Lake, with two other sisters of the bride, Mrs. William Herman and Mrs. Elmer Smith, as assistant hostesses. The last one, a kitchen shower, was given for members of the bridegroom's family at the home of Mrs. Carol Kimball in Crystal Lake last Sunday evening. A lovely wedding was solemnized in the First Methodist church of Crystal Lake on Saturday, Sept. 16, when Miss Judith Anne Lawrence of McHenry became the bride of Mr. Dennis William Simpson of Crystal Lake. Rev. Lloyd O. Coleman officiated at the 7:30 o'clock candlelight, double ring rite which united in marriage the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl F. Lawrence of 3011 South Pool street and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Simpson of 170 S. Terra Cotta road. Soloist for the occasion was Frank H. Holden of Elgin, who sang "O Perfect Love" and "The Lord's Prayer", accompanied by Mrs. Doris Ihde of Crystal Lake. The church altar was decorated with bouquets of gladioli. .The bride, given in marriage by her father, was radiant in a full length gown of peau de soi, the bodice of inset lace matching the same type lace in the bustle. The dress \#as styled with long sleeves and scoop neckline, and the skirt extended into a cathedral length train. Her crown of seed pearls held in place a threetiered, elbow length veil. She wore pearl earrings, a gift ol' the groom, and carried a white purple-throated orchid with streamers of stephanotis. Her "something old" was a handkerchief which had belonged to her grandmother. Miss Susan Lawrence of McHenry acted as maid of honor for her sister, and Sue Wiltberger of Crystal Lake was bridesmaid. They wore beige nylon chiffon over taffeta sheath dresses, fashioned with nylon chiffon over-skirts, short sleeves and scoop necklines, with which they had brown gloves and shoes. Their headpieces" were crowns of aurora borealis with brown blusher veils and similar earrings, gifts of the bride, and carried bouquets of yellow and bronze mums. Frank L. Wiltberger of Crystal Lake served as best man and James Ruckstuhl of Crystal Lake was groomsman. Ushers were Jerry Brogren of Crystal Lake and Joseph Rehling of Palos Park. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Lawrence selected a poudre blue dress in cotton lace over taffeta, with which she wore navy accessories and a corsage of white carnations tipped to match her dress. The groom's mother wore a deep turquoise silk dress, black accessories and a corsage of white carnations tipped to match the dress. A reception immediately followed the ceremony at the Odd Fellows hall in Crystal Lake for 160 guests, after which the couple left on a trip to the Black Hills, South Dakota. ^ Guest registrar was Miss Jane Simpson of Crystal Lake, cousin of the groom. Mrs. M. W. Beth of Chicago, aunt of the groom, and Mrs. James Ruckstuhl of Crystal Lake served cake and Miss Diane Tushkowski and Miss Nancy McNulty of McHenry were at the punch table. For her going-away dress, the bride travelled in a brown print silk sheath with matching linen coat," brown accessories and a white orchid corsage. Upon their return they will reside at 251 S. Richmond road, became the "bride of Mr. Thomas James Keenan of 5659 N. Magnolia, Chicago, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Keenan of 727 N. E. First street, Pompano Beach, Fla., in a pretty wedding service which took place at 11 o'clock on Saturday, Sept. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic church. Rev. Fr. Eugene Baumhofer officiated at t he marriage. Sister Andreella and the children's choir . offered appropriate music for the ceremony in a church decorated with bouquets of white glads and mums on the altar and pom poms on the ends of the pews. The attractive bride approached the altar, lovely in a gown of silk organza with imported lace, styled with lace bodice and sleeves and featuring a double lace peek-a-boo skirt, lace edged. Her veil of silk illusion was in exclusive tulip design with jeweled aurora crystal beaded crown, and she had a colonial bouquet of Amazon lilies and stephanotis. Miss Janice Hettermann, a close friend, acted as maid of h o n o r a n d b r i d e s m a i d s w e r e Joanne Karol of Chicago, Jackie Skidmore, Carol Weingart, Roberta Meyer and Judy Barwig of McHenry, friends, and Mrs. Don Dowe of Bloominglon, sister of the groom. All were attired in street length, kelly green taffeta sheath dresses with bouffant overskirts. Their headpieces were aurora crystal head crowns with green blusher veils, and they carried colonial bouquets of green and white mums. Jim Huemann served as best man and groomsmen were Bill Krueger of Chicago, Don Dowe of Bloomington, Ken Blake, Jim Nawa and Bob Hettermann of McHenry and Dave Stromberg of Lake Zuridh. Ushers were Jerry Stilling and Dan Blake. Mike Hettermann of McHenry, 5-year-old cousin of the groom, was ring bearer. Mrs. Blake selected a blue organza dress over taffeta, sheath style, with which she wore matching accessories. Mrs. Keenan wore a blue silk dress with beige accessories. A breakfast for forty guests followed the ceremgny- at 1 o'clock at the V.F.W. clubhouse. Later, 350 friends, and relatives gathered there for an evening reception. Sandy Hettermann, Cathy Hettermann, Diane Stilling, Linda Herdrich, Janet Jung and Margie Jung assisted in passing the guest book, cutting cake and opening gifts. The wedding cake was made by Mrs. Herman Dowe, mother-in-law of the groom's sister. The couple left on a wedding trip through the South, and upon their return will reside at 5659 N. Magnolia, Chicago. The bride is a 1959 graduate of the McHenry high school and is a secretary at Kemper Insurance in Chicago. The groom attended schools in Florida, studied for three years at Florida Southern, arid is now a draftsman for Wiiptern Electric, Chicago. LEROY HILLER NEW PRESIDENT OF CHORAL CLUB LeRoy Hiller was elected president of the McHenry Choral club at the second meeting, of the season, held last Monday evening. Serving with him for the year will be the newly named vice-president, Tim Wheelock; secretary, Betty Martin; and treasurer, Ruth Barger. The election followed a few words by the out-going president, Tom Russell, who extended his appreciation for the cooperation and assistance received during his two years in office. Membership this fall has reached more than fifty, and rehearsals are in progress for the annual holiday program which will be presented Dec. 2 and 3. All adult singers will be welcomed into the organization until the fall deadline on Monday, Oct. 2. Meetings are held each Monday evening at 8 o'clock in the high school music room. KATHLEEN WRIGHT, JACK OSTERBY ARE MARRIED IN CITY An exchange of rings signified the joining together of two young lives last Saturday morning when Miss Kathleen Wright of 2&08 N. Oakwood avenue, McHenry, became the bride of Jack Osterby of 5207 W. Orchard drive, McCullom Lake. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wright, while his parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Osterby. The 10 a.m. service was recited by Father Coakley of St. Patrick's church, with Mrs. Carl Weber furnishing the music. For the solem occasion, the altar was bedecked with blooms of white and red. As rhe cahne down the aisle escorted by her father, the bride was a vision in a floor length gown of white lace and tulle over taffeta. The bodice of white lace was enhanced with a scalloped neckline and the gown featured long sleeves. Panels of lace fell gracefully from the skirt, with white lace forming a V-effect in back. Her fingertip illusion veil was held in place with a crown of pearls and sequins. The bridal bouquet consisted of white roses and stephanotis surrounding a white prayer book. Miss Patricia Moran of Elk Grove village served as maidof- honor for her cousin. She wore a ballerina length, plum colored gown and accessories and carried pink and white carnations. The groom's long time chum, Donald Hayes of McCullom Lake, was the best man. Mrs. Wright chose a soft grey afternoon frock with matching accessories and corsage for her daughter's wedding, while Mrs. Osterby was gowned in rose with matching accessories and corsage which enhanced her brunette coloring. Many out-of-town guests were included in the fifty people who gathered at the bride's home at noon for a buffet style wedding luncheon. Kelly green was the bride's selection for her going-away costume. The young couple kept their honeymoon plans a secret, but they have rented an apartment at Buck's Tqign club. w The new Mrs. Osterby is an alumna of McHenry high, class of '60, and is currently employed in Crystal Lake. The groom completed four years also at McHenry high school in '57 and is employed in McHenry. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hen-" kins of Buda, 111., and Mr. and Mrs. Josie Smith of McHenry returned this week from a^trip through the East. They visited relatives in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and. Connecticut. The travellers also stopped at Washington, D. C., and tMk sight-seeing trips in Washii^- ton and Niagara Falls. The Illinois Home Bureau Federation district II held its annual meeting last week to a record number of over 230 women members. It was the first to be held in McHenry county. Counties represented were Lake, Kane, Cook, Kankakee, Kendall, Will, LaSalle, Grundy, DeKaib, DuPage and McHenry. McHenry county served 'as hosts for the occasion, having charge of registration, coffee hour and special music. Outstanding speakers were Dr. Martha Dunlap, assistant director of extension service, who spoke on a "New and Broader Outlook at Extension Programs", with a promise to have more and better programs for all who are interested. Mrs. Justen Wagy, another outstanding speaker, told about changes in the county planning systems and possible action taken.
