Feeds made for i poultry are well balanced with ! protein and mineral. With swine the situation becomes a little more confused. Generally, we can figure that balancing grain with mineral alone will cut the grain usage from 12 bu. of grain per 100 lbs. of .pork' produced to 7 or 7 '•_> bu. . " . By supplying protein in addition to mineral grains usage may be cut to 51 -j bushel or less. Time is also saved and quality of finished product is enhanced by feeding the protein supplement. To sell hogs raised on corn alone would be almost impossible due to the excess fat these animals would carry. Red muscle meat is made of protein, and protein must be supplied in the feed. There is no other way for the hog to get it. Dairy cattle may or may not need protein supplement in their feeds, depending upon what other feed-stuffs are being fed. If the dairyman is feeding a high protein legume ; hay and high protein grains, | and the sows are not produc-1 ing too heavily, it is quite pos- j sibie that protein requirements can be met. Mineral requirements might also be met under these conditions. However, probably less than 5 per cent of the dairymen in the country are feeding, under these ideal conditions. Beef cattle are generally in need of protein and minerals for maximum gains. Because the bulk of the feed fed to beef cattle will vary quite widely from one part of the country to the other -- and even between feeders in the same local area -- the needs will also vary. A few dollars spent by farmen or feed dealers getting some protein analyses on the locally available feeding materials will soon demonstrate how much protein supplements are needed. Some lives can be compared to a beautiful spring day, in a beautiful park, with the evening lengthening into a beautiful twilight, while, other lives are best represented by a cold, blustery, winter day, with dusk descending early and cold. Why?? Camera Gob News The contest opened to the public will wind up with the judging of entries on Oct. 9. Winner will be notified. At the board meeting held Sept. 27 at the home of Dick Rauscher, it was decided to hold a field trip to St. Mary's at Mundelein on Oct. 15. The leaves should be turning by that time so many interesting color pictures and slides should be the result. The forming point for the trip will be the Camera Center on Riverside drive between 1 and 1:30 p.nn. It is definitely an asset to the community to have such an active camera group. To be an active club member for a year is the same as attending a school in photography. All phases of the art form are covered aind all of the demonstrations are highly professional in their presentation. Also of great benefit is tire discount available for being a member of the group. All interested people, whether young or old, are very cordially invited to come to the next meeting. The memoers or the club are very pleased with the response to the contest as is evident from the number of entries submitted.. A total of 100 entries of black and white and color shots will be judged at 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at the city hall. Dick Rauscher is in charge of the judges who are Mayor Donald P. Doherty, Jack Salika and Casper Ehlen. An egoist is a feller who thinks as much of himself as you do of yourself.
