LAKELAND ANNEXATION "Public Pulse: "It's extremely interesting to read (in the Plaindealer) that the McHenry City Council and "representatives from Lakeland Park" have been meeting to discuss annexation of Lakeland Park. "One fact has never been mentioned in any coverage of this story. And that is: Lakeland Park does not adjoin McHenry. Lakeland Shores lies between McHenry and Lakeland Park. Now this fact may -- or may not -- be of interest to the parties concerned. But I'm certain that many persons ih McHenry have assumed that Lakeland Park represents all the land and all the homeowners west of the city's limits. "The Lakeland Park Property Owners association does not, nor will it ever, speak for me on any question of govemrtiental jurisdiction. It has no authority to make agreements with McHenry's City Council tinder the mistaken impressions that annexation is the cheap way out. "Lakeland Park -- sorely beset with road trouble -- may feel that annexation is the solution -- hopefully a cheap one -- that will bring in addition to paved streets, curbing and sidewalks. . . sewers, street lights and police patrols. "A quick survey will show to anyone (who wants to take the time) that few residents of Lakeland Park understand the cost of^annexation. Many still think they are residents of Chicago, where they took everything from chlorinated water to street paving, for granted. --* "Undoubtedly, they want every advantage any urban plan could offer, but, can they pay the price? Are they willing to pay? Ask them! But please, don't just show them the glistening "big city" advantages. Show them the hard cash figures -- for each homeowner.
