Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALEB Thursday, December 7. 1961 £cLHJ£U/<dljA. SO I HEAR... It was a big crowd that turned out to honor the football Warriors last Thursday night. Bill George, of Chicago Bears fame, proved just the type for such an event. His humor was good and his answers were sharp. He went over in a big way. Seemed like old times to chat with Frank Kempfer and Uncle John Dreymiller on the far West Side recently. We are trying to talk them1 into a trip to Florida for the winter. Nov$| wouldn't they have fun on tnil beach! Oh--but going to that West Side has its hazards. It wasn't bad enough to have Herb Reihansperger barge in on us at Brown's (formerly Mugg's). No. Herb had to see Cub cohort, Junior Freund, across the street and hailed him pronto. It was just after some Sox trades and they must have wanted to wish us well. They did! After Veeck's home for Hip aged, the Short Sox are going to look like a teen-age youth group. We are on the Short side. Might as well get some youth back after trading it all away. Didn't see the Warriors lose to Barrington, but have been told the team was cold. They must have been warmed up when we saw them beat Woodstock here on Saturday night. Have forsaken the press bench nt home games and joined a riest of solid fans in row six. Don Seaton got us in the right stalls so we will know the w-.y from now on. Tom Evans checks coats for the group, stacking them on the window sill. All the comforts. Looks like we are going to like our new home. We wonder why every school has to turn on so much heat in gymnasiums at game time. Just give the fans a hot game and they won't need so much warmed air. .1--. . There is nothing better than a °stack of pancakes lor breakfast Of course, it Is rough on Mom standing at the stove while all the family feeds their faces. Next Sunday you can take Mom to the Johnsburg Community Hall where she can sit down and eat all the pancakes she can hold. The Johnsburg Foresters sponsor a real good basketball team and need some extra funds to handle the expenses. Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. BLUE STREAKS DEFEATED BY iOES 74-58 At 2 p.m. the Johnsburg team meets North Chicago in a battle to break a tie for first place in the league. Another game follows at 3:15 p.m. Morens Scores 24 Points And Team Play Looks Sharp The Woodstock Blue Streaks came to town last Saturday night to dq battle with Coach Fulton's basketball Warriors and gave the home team a real battle before going down to defeat 74 to 58. Paul Morenz was in top form, shooting enough to gather 24 points, feeding his mates and setting up a few plays that were beauties. And Paul was thinking-- thinking fast. On a couple of occasions, he was too near the out of bounds line so banged the ball against defenders' knees to send the ball out as McHenry's ball. Woodstock trotted out a couple of Sophomores who showed they belong on the varsity squad. At center was Cole Johansen, a 6' 4" whopper, weighing in at 210 pounds. He got off his feet well and lead his team in scoring with 17 points. Don Anderson, a fellow built for basketball, was the other Soph and he chimned in with 16 points. He should be a real smoothy by the time he is a senior. ^ But, while we think it only sporting to give credit where credit is due, it remains that our own Warriors were a much better unit than they had previously shown. The first three quarters of the game were plenty close. In fact the Streaks had a hot streak in the third quarter when they went out ahead. But, after Eckert and Johansen fouled out, the game was all over. Their defense was shot and Harry May was all alone for several shots as he sank 9 baskets. Fast and Furious The game was fast and furious in the first half and big Vern Petersen had 3 fouls so early that he had to be taken out to be sent in later. Teddy Freund burned up the wood with terrific defensive pressing. Sophomore Fred Kusch, who is growing into 6' 7" stature, again showed that steady development can make him the man McHenry basketball has needed. Bill DeCicco and John Rourke flashed speed when speed was needed. Bob Fletcher, Chuck Miller and Phil Sehmitt came in to wind up the victory. The Warriors swished in 14 free throws out of 24 attempts while-, Woodstock hit 16 out of 29. Morenz had 8 out of 9, Freund 2 for 2, and Eckert missed only one in 7 shots. ,Yep! That was a pretty good ball game until Eckert and Johansen fouled out. But, that's the game of basketball George and Rita Barbian entered the "State Mixed Doubles Bowling Tournament" and bowled a total of 1324 pins. Rita came through with a 235 game. Now they travel to Joliet a week from Saturday to continue in state competition. Pretty good, eh? and McHenry was the better team -- 74 to 58. BRONCO VARSITY NIPS MCHS 53-50 IN LOOP OPENER The Warriors of McHenry High failed to put on., their war paint for the invasion of Barrington last Friday night and came home on the short end of a 53-50 score. The Fulton boys came through the first period with only a 1-point deficit, but the big fall-out came&ln the second quarter when the Broncos outscored McHenry 23-14. Fouls were numerous in the game and McHenry picked up a slight edge by hitting 20 out of 31 while Barrington had 17 out of 31 tries. Bob Fletcher had a perfect 8 for 8 mark. Nothing worked right for the Warriors, but they made a game of it in the last period by out scoring the winners 13-9. Too little too late! Marian Fathers' Club is an organization to support and sponsor a variety of school activities. In its two-year history, it has headed such programs a s C a r e e r D a y , s c h o l a s t i c achievement, welfare, fatherson banquet and father-daughtier banquet, transportation for Sisters on the faculty, and athletic recognition banquets. For the first two weeks of December, club members are concentrating on a membership drive and have set a target of 550 new members. Gerald Smith, club president, has named Melvin Johnson, Woodstock, to quarterback the membership drive. Carrying the ball in the McHenry area are Eugene Nye, Theodore Pitzen, Charles Vycital and William H. Tonyan. The club has an advisory council of 37 members which meets monthly. This meeting is held between regular monthly full-membership meetings. The club is not a fund-raising organization, Johnson explained, since the 14 parishes in McHenry county fully finance the construction, maintenance and operation of Marian Central Catholic high school.
