Page Four SO I HEAR... The thermometer sank low and the snow did blow as we talked baseball with our old friend Holger Pedersen this week. We are both of the opinion that sport pages are never the same when baseball news is missing. Holger urges us not to be impatient -- the spring training season is near. That is the time when we read glowing reports of young players. A little later the big time pitchers start throwing curves. This year it may be different. With two extra teams in each league the material will be spread much thinner. Some of those young players are going to stick around. breezing past the McHenry St. Mary's grade school team. A card tells us of C.O.F. Coming Events. Their Bowling Jamboree will be held at McHenry Recreation Feb. 4-11. Entries close Jan. 24 so please call Tom Sutton right away. Players are urged to call .»im Doran before Feb. 10 to register- for the big basketball lournament. Never a dull moment in local sports circles. The Warrior basketball game at St. Ed's was called off last Saturday night on account of heavy showflakes -- about a foot deep! We were reading that Mr. W r i g 1 e y may hire more coaches. Now, there's a man who is doing more about the unemployment problem than our federal agencies. Tow trucks are busy these days, but driving has. changed. Streets and highways are cleared of snow. Remember way back when we used to jack up a rear wheel on the old Model "T", pour hot water in the radiator, then crank away? II worked best if you had somebody in the car to pull the spark lever after the first sign of life in the old fliwer. You pulled the choke wire with your left hand while cranking with the right. Snow tires were unheard of and you wouldn't think of driving without chains. In fact, sometimes you wouldn't thinh of driving at all. PLEASE NOTE -- Kindly send all sport page news to this department at 3429 West Elm Street. It may reach us a half day earlier and stand a better chance of making the deadline. Now the Warriors have a busy week-end coming up. Harold Jepson was in this week and told us Dundee lacks size. But, his eyes brightened when he spoke of the Sophs. The luture looks good. The Antioch five will be here Saturday night for a nonconference game. DAILY PINUPS -- Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and they'll hand you a hanky. This about women has warily been said. "Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead. A joint account is sometimes accredited as a deposit for him, checking for her. It's not your position, but your disposition that tends to your happiness. Cocktails are concoctions that make you see double and walk singularly. Down Paiace alleys Bill Worrfi bowled a 638 series in the Tavern league. Leonard Thennes and Bob Peisert each had 622 series in the McHenry Rec. Majors while George Meyers ^had a rousing 275 game "in a 602 .series. And the girls in the Tuesday Thirty Niners vverie thrilled with a 214-560 posted by Doris Freund. SCOUT GUEST On Friday, Jan. 12, the Blackhawk Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, will have A. A. Kirk, national director of Catholic Servfce of the Boy Scouts of America, as its guest Mr. Kirk will visit with the members of the council stafl during the morning. St. Mary's of Wood- , held recently in Mendham, New stock surprised local fans by Jersey. " The man who loves beauty Has riches untold. The rain is his silver The sun is his gold; He gives more to life Than a millionaire can And he's richer than ever, That fortunate man. ANONYMOUS Baur, Llshamer, First la Wrestling Tournament McHenry's wrestling squ&d placed five men in the finals of the New Year's Wrestling Tournament at Rockford last week. Senior Baur took the 138 weight class, winning with an escape in the last five seconds of the match, defeating Carlson of East Rockford 4-3. Senior Ken Lishamer made it ten straight wins in a row winning the 112 weight class by defeating previous unbeaten Sammons of Rochelle 5-4. Three Place Second Tom Houck (95) fought his way to the finals, but lost in the Championship bout to Grundall of Savanna 8-6. Bob Wahl gained the finals but also lost in the Championship bout to Giordini of East Rockford. Heavyweight Wayne Latimer lost his first match of the year in the championship match to Miller of Sterling 5-2. Tychewicz Lost For Season McHenry's outstanding 127 pounder, Bill Tychewicz may be out for the season. Bill dislocated his knee in the tournament and will have a cast on his leg for three or so weeks. His loss will' hurt McHenry's chances in the conference tournament, February 9th and , 10th. Fuchs And Dowhln Place Wayne Fuchs also suffered his first loss of the year, but came back to win a third place by beating Funderby of Belvidere 4-1. Jim Dowhin placed fourth in losing to Springer of Dixon 7-3. Four Win J.V. Championships Four Junior Varsity wrestlers won first place championships in their respective weight classes. George Sorenson (133), Larry Schuerr (138), Tom Trendler (180) and Ron Gelvin (Hwy).
