McHENRY HAS GREATEST NUMBER AT MENTAL CENTER At their regular March meeting. members of the board of the Mental Health Center for McHenry County, 3514 W. Waukeegan road, McHenry, were given figures indicating increased use of the Center's facilities bv patients throughout the county. During 1981, the following number of pa-I tients were referred to the center from each community l i s t e d : M c H e n r y , 7 8 : W o o d stock 47; Crystal Lake, 43; Wonder Lake, 15; Harvard, 13; Algonquin, 10: Cary, 8: Fox j River Grove, 7; Marengo. 5; Al- I den, 4; Ringwood, 3; Spring Grove, 3: Huntley, 2; Union, 2; Hebron. 1 and Richmond. 1. This list includes thirty-five patients at state mental institutions, people whose recovery has advanced to the point where they can return to their families and jobs while receiving out-patient supervision at the Mental Health center. Such treatment is not only highly preferable for the patient, but saves the state $1,000 a year, the cost of maintaining a patient in a state mental hospital. The McHenry center plays an important role in the new approach to mental illness. New drugs, better methods of rehabilitation, programs of preventive therapy, and access to pi onipt, inexpen s i v e, professional care at local mental health centers have resulted in a marked decrease in hospital confinement for the mentally ill. However, mental palients j still occupy half the space in | all American hospitals, more I than victims of polio, cancer, heart disease, tuberculosis and all other diseases. The fund raising committee of 1 he McHenry center,. under the chairmanship of Rev. Georre W. Martin, has sent out letters asking the support of oreanizal ions, businessmen, and individual contributors for the center's program. The actual cost per patient treatment at Thursday, April 5, 196^ the center is $20, of which the average patient pays $5, and many patients pay nothing.
