^Thursday, April 12, 1962 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Page Seventeen McHenry Shores FORMER MUSICIANS REMINISCE ABOUT DANCE BAND ERA Patt Petersen - EV. 5-5425 A The big band era; people lining the Chicago sidewalks eight abreast in front of a theatre which announced the arrival of Miller, James, Herman, etc., the many actors, singers, performers which were included in this exciting world of music, dance fads and one night stands, are all included in the memories of Leona and Charlie Wagner. Charlie's occupation for mai^y years was that of a musician in the Chicago theatre. Because of this they both became closely associated with many of the name bandleaders and performers. It was a wonderful time for both of them. Like many of us, the Wagners mourn the loss of the big bands on the American music When they were first married, Leona owned, and operated her own dance studio where she taught ballroom dancing. Later she worked with the federal government as an auditor. The whole Wagner family has always been interested in bowling and Leona is no exception. She thoroughly enjoys the sport and has at one time j/pr another been on a number teams and leagues. She also loves to fish and go boating. Gardenings her favorite hobby and she can be seen at all hours of the day working in her yard. As recording secretary of the McHenry Shores club and an active member of the McHenry Women's club she keeps fairly busy. The Wagners have two sons, T^harles, Jr., and Richard, who are both married. The Charles Wagner, Jr.'s have presented t h e S e n i o r W a g n e r s w i t h a bouncy little grandson, Greg, who is their pride and joy. r Trees Given to Crippled Children A very thoughtful gesture is being made by the Garden Club ^pf McHenry. Mildred Snively, a member, reported that the club intends to supply each child at the Cerebral Palsy School in Crystal Lake with a beautiful flowering crab tree for his very own. Each tree will be marked with a child's name and after the ladies help the children plant their trees they will have the pleasure of watching their own tree growand blossoming. Such a wonderful opp ortunity for these children to have a little beauty brought into their lives. And to prove that there are still some very warmhearted people left in this old world of our; the nurseryman who is supplying the garden club with these beautiful trees is doing it at his own expense. Newcomer in Town After getting rid of one unwelcome guest it seems as though the Shores is going to have another visitor on its hands for a while. This time it's the measles. It looks as if Mr. M. is going to stay around for some time. Tracey Brunke brought Mr. M. home from school with her last week and we wonder just how long it'll be before Patty and Leslie take a liking to him. Mike Ruemellan had a visit from the old man and so did Johnny Valek. Anyone else? Around Town Helen and Frank Jacek were pleasantly surprised last. Sunday when they went to visit Helen's brother, John, in Michigan City, Ind. With them were Helen's sister and husband, Minnie and Bill Borowski, of Cicero. When they arrived they found that another sister and her husband had chosen this particular day for visiting too. This was Jean and Burt. Hard wick and their daughter, Donna, and her husband, Don, all from Lyons. This made quite a houseful of company and they all had such a good time. A1 and Roberta Mieritz and their family visited with Al's family in Park Ridge last Sunday. Al's dad, Wilmer Mieritz, was celebrating his birthday. Al's grandmother and aunt from Wisconsin were also there to join in on the festivities. The flower show in Chicago was really beautiful this year according to Mildred Snively who attended last Thursday with Elijah Duncan. Flower displays seem especially lovely this time of the year when everything outside your windew still looks rather grim and still gives an attitude of "Spring will never come this year". Leona Wagner also visited the show and returned with some graceful spikes of purple heather. The Wetzels had company over the weekend. Fred's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wetzel, Sr. took advantage of the fine weather we had and dropped in on the family. Patty Brunke entertained a house guest last weekend. Krista Justen spent a happy Saturday and Sunday with Patty and her family. There have been so many reports of colds and slight cases of flu we are sorry to say. Almost every answering hello on the phone is preceded by a McCullom Lake REMEMBER TO VOTE SATURDAY IN SCHOOL ELECTION Eve Levesque With the primary election tucked away and the results published, another election will be forthcoming this Saturday, April 14, to elect members of the school board for District 156 (high school) and District 15 (grade school). The polling place is the beachhouse and the polls will be open from NOON until 7 p.m. For some reason, this election usually escapes the notice of the voters and our record has been poor. Let us rectify this on Saturday, by turning out in great numbers and cast a ballot. Handling the polls will be Emma Pyritz, Elma Nelson and Eleanor Creutz. You do not have to be a registered voter for this election. Couples Journey for Chicago Wedding Mr. and Mrs. Theodor Olsen; the Willard Schultz family; Marge and Ole Olsen; and Jake and myself drove to the city on Saturday to attend the beautiful wedding cf Sally's sniffle. This is the weather for it, so be careful. Happy Birthdays and Anniversaries Shirley Hawes, one of our newer residents, has a birthday on the thirteenth of this month (since that's also on a Friday we double our wish for a happy day to you; Shirley). Little Bonnie Jo Pinkonsly will be all of one year old on the fourteenth of April. We suppose s:he will have a generous supply of helpers to help her blow out her one candle. Thomas Hawkins and Stanley Misiak have a birthday apiece on the fifteenth. Debbie Vilim is another little first birthday girl. She will be one year old on April 18. Hapj>y birthday, Deb. That headline is a fooler, since there are no anniversaries. Excuse please. grandson, Robert Temple, to Arleen Dynowski. They were married at St. Peter's Reformed Lutheran church and a reception for more than 250 guests was held on the northwest side. Sally was also very proud of her two granddaughters, Lynn and Peggy Temple, who served a s b r i d e s m a i d a n d j u n i o r bridesmaid. They were darling in gowns of apricot silk organza with bell skirts and matching satin slippers. Three other young ladies were in the party. Sally's daughter, Gert Temple, was resplendent in beige with matching accessories while the bride's mother chose Kelly green silk chifton. The colors of the wedding party looked like a breath of spring. The food was magnificent and plentiful and dancing room to an excellent orchestra for everyone. Hospital Patients Marge Davidson was rushed to Memorial hospital for McHenry county early Sunday morning after suffering a stroke. Upon detailed examination, her plight was discovei'ed to be not too serious and she was scheduled tc be home yesterday. There were several harrowing moments for Helge when he received no response from his ever lovin'. Fortunately for the Davidsons, Marge's nephew and family were weekending with them, and Joe Mullen "took over". He summoned the doctor and the ambulance while his wife helped with other chores. Helge was impressed with the concern expressed by his neighbors tor Marge's welfare. Betty Poledna was hospitalized in Harvard last Thursday for observation. No Clean-up Detail at Beach Four pairs of strong arms used their muscles Saturday morning to clean up the area of the beachhouse. They " included Don Parenti, Joe De- Mar, Ole Olsen (and truck), and Fred Legler. Fred was impressed with the service which the Cullom-Knoll association offer and plunked down his six dollars for dues immediately.
