VOTERS LOOK BACK ON PRIMARIES OF RECENT YEARS As one looks back at the approxi m a t e 1 y 16,000 votes cast in McHenry county in Tuesday's primary, he may not realize that this is only the second time in the last quarter of a century when primary voting reached the height established in 1936. Evtn so, the percentage was much lower this year considering the numbers of eligible voters in the area, which has naturally grown with the tremendous population increase. The vote in '36-- the year Franklin D. Roosevelt was reelected for the first time-- reached 15,451. Of this number. 10,567 were Republicans and 4,884 were Democrats. Back in 1958, the 1936 vote was nearly tied when 15,250 votef's went to the polls in the county, 13,750 Republicans and 1,500 Democrats. The fact that 1962 is an Offyear (a President will not be elected) probably accounts for the fact that Tuesday's election brought out a comparatively small vole. However, contests at the local, state and national level evoked interest which kept the total vote from dropping below the on-yeai total of two years ago. 11 is- interesting to review county voting in primaries back through the last thirty' years: Total GOP Dems 1960 15505 11254 4251 1958 15250 13750 1500 1956 . 11666 8766 2906 1954 13672 12527 1045 1952 14122 11939 2183 1950 12629 10209 2149 1948 6783 6146 637 1946 9097 8129 968 1944 6669 5892 777 1942 11387 10236 1151 1940 14822 10602 4220 1938 13517 8446 5071 1936 15451 10567 4884 1934 14290 9627 4663 1932 10446 7804 2642 JAYCEE PROJECT, Sand for Sandboxes is the project the McHenry Jaycees have slated for Sunday, April 29.
