How can I put a high polish on some of my furniture? A. Saturate a cloth with equal parts of lemon oil and turpentine, and go over the entire surface of each piece of furniture. Wipe off the excess oil with a damp cloth, and polish with a woolen cloth until you're looking at yourself in the tnirror-Hke surface you have produced. Q. How can I I mprovise some white ink for writing in a black photo album, when the real.thin£ is not around? A. White shoe polish mokes a good substitute. Shake the bottle well, dip the pen into it, and youll often find that this writes even more clearly than white ink itself. Q. How can I mend kid gloves so that the repair will be substantial? A. By first buttonholing around the edges of the tear before drawing them together, and then oversewing the buttonhole. Q. Is it necessary that I clean and wash out a paintbrush if I am going to use it again on the same job the following d$y? A. No; all you have to do is protect the bristles of the brush from the air, and yon can do this by wrapping them tightly in some aluminum foil, twisting and shaping the end of the sheet around the brush handle. This will prevent the paint in the bristles from hardening. Q. How can I slip on my rubber gloves more easily? A. Keep a salt shaker of cornstarch handy, and sprinkle a little on the hands before donning your gloves. Cornstarch will not cake, as talcum powder is prone to do. Q. What is the best way to caramelize sugar? A. In a dry skillet in the oven. In this way, it heats from the bottom and the top at the same time, caramell?.- ing quickly and smoothly. Q. How can I make gelatin dessert or salad very quickly, when time is at a premium? A. Mix your gelatin with only enough hot water to dissolve it, then use ice water for the remaining a m ou n t of liquid. The gelatin will set in just a few minutes. Add fruit, if you wish, but be sure thut it is ice cold. Q. How can I prevent any grease spots on plastered walls from "bleeding through" new wallpaper and ruining its appearance? A. Before applying your new paper, eover all the grease spots on the walls with shellac, and allow this to dry thoroughly. The shellac effectively seals in the grease. Q. How can I most easily remove cat and dog hairs from upholstered furniture or car seats? A. Simply by wiping lightly over them with a board wrapped with adhesive tape, sticky side out. Q. How can I keep the cream from curdling in coffee? --: r A. If the sweetness of cream seems uncertain, stir in a pinch of baking soda. This will prevent its curdling even in hot coffee. Q. What can I do when I have inadvertently added too much salt to food while cooking? A. Stretch a clean cloth tightly over the vessel and sprinkle a tablespoon of flour over the cloth. The flour will absorb the salt, if allowed to steam for a few minutes. Q. How can I straighten o u t a w a r p e d p h o n o g r a p h record? A. One oftcn-successful method is to place the record between two pieces of glass, and set it where the sun will shine on it for an hour or so. Q. How can I keep that h&rd-to-remove substance from gathering on the sides of my pan when boiling sweet potatoes? A. A half-teaspoon of bacon drippings or other grease, added to the water in which sweet potatoes or other root vegetables are boiled will do the trick. Q. How can I prolong the life of my brooms? A. By dipping them occasionally into boiling suds -- which makes them both tough and pliable. Q. How can I renovate and brighten my black suede shoes? A. You can give them a ritew lease on life by sponging them with some black coflee. "Dear Sir: "In 1831 a young Frenchman visited this country, studied our people, our government and our institutions. He then returned home and recorded his observations in the book, "Democracy in America". The man' was Alexis DeToqueville and he wrote: 'In examining the Constitution of the United States, which is the most perfect federal Constitution that ever existed, one is startled at the variety of information and the amount of discernment that it presupposes in the people whom it is meant to govern.' "Alexander Hamilton attempted to persuade the people of New York <he relied on information and discernment') to accept and vote for the Constitution by discussing taxation. See the tliirty-first and thirty-fifth Federalist Papers. He felt that in the event of the failure of the 'checks and balances' the 'power in the people' would set things right. That is, in the event of excessive taxation the people would bring pressui*e to bear. Therefore, today there is no provision against excessive taxation in our federal Constitution. "On April 10 and 14 the people of McHenry and Chicago expressed their opinions on taxation. But this taxation was for focal things that you, can quickly see and check on. How about the federal taxation, which is ten times greater, and which you cannot check on. Have you properly expressed your opinion? What is the proper expression of this opinion? Shall I go on? "Joseph C. Juel "5416 W. Lake Shore Drive "Wonder Lake 5, 111."
