Page Four THE McHENRlT PLAINDEALER Thursday, May 3. 1962. SO I HEAR... Meeting former athletes at the big party last week brought back many memories. "Zeke" Bacon wouldn't let us forget the time we went down to Dundee to play in a basketball tournament and yours truly fouled out before knowing what hacking meant. We played the game rougher up our way and had* ik> warning that sufh sissy fouls would be called. Somebody said " we made two free throws in two minutes, but we doubt that. We touldn't shoot for sour apples. Just specialized in belting back any forward who ventured into the territory we were guarding. McHENRY IGH Warriors Bounce Back For Victory In Final Inning In those days, you didn't have to shoot your own free throws so "Red" Winkel, a hot-shot, used to step to the line for some ef us. We travelled by train to that tournament and had rooms in various homes. Dundee was far from home. Gus Freund, the biggest man in school in his day, and Sib Whiting, one of McHenry's best athletes, were also on hand for the party. We could have talked all night--that Is, after we caught our breath! From Johnsburg came Joe Frett -with yarns of our scorekeeping days for their team. Fretts had the best home brew in the territory and it was a great cure for diamond dust in the throat. - Frank Freund, a great ball player, told of the days when he pitched to "Shooty" Thelen, when spit-balls were legal. "Shooty" was as rough as they came back of the plate, but used to tell Frank not to "slop it up too much." Ed Tonyan, who could throw Tuesday, April 17, after being behind by scores of 4-0 and 5-2. McIIenry overcame the lead of the Woodstock Blue Strenks baseball team and finally won the game in the seventh bv a score of 9 to 5. Woodstock was winning from the very start as they scored one in the first on a single, a stolen base, and an error. They scored again in the following two innings in somewhat the same manner. In the second, the Streaks scored on an error, a walk, two passed balls, and a wild pitch, without getting a single hit. After two strikeouts in 1he third, a man walked, and the next batter, Widmayer, promptly responded with a home run to leftcenter field. The next batter struck out to end this uprising that was started with two outs. McHenry started their winning drive in the Ion of the fourth with two runs on two hits and a walk. Now the Warriors were only two runs behind, but in the fifth Woodstock added another run on two singles and two errors, .widening the margin. to three. In the top of the sixth McHenry scored three big runs to tie the score at 5-5. The remarkable thing about this was th^t we had only one hit, a timely double by Bob Fletcher, the center-fielder. Three walks, a sacrifice fly, and an error helped in the scoring. If j no. one scored in the seventh, • the game would be called and ! played another time because | daylight was almost gone. McHenry answered the challenge a baseball through a plank in j with four tie-breaking, and a his prime, was another old timer on hand. So was "Little Joe" Freund (the people's choice as a full of fire catcher). Somebody said Harold Freund got bashful and ducked the spotlight. If he has half the speed of his younger days, nobody could have caught him. We were pleased to have Walt Freund and two of the boys who played ball for him ; Winkleman, even though he half inning later, winning runs. They were scored on only two hits, but five gifted runs were costly to the Woodstock cause. In the bottom of the inning the Streaks went out on three easy ground balls, and McHenry had made a terrific comeback to win 9-5 and to stay on top with the league leaders. Bill DeCicco got the win for the Warriors, and McHenry by John vareae McHENRY TAKES NORTH SUBURBAN BASEBALLLEAD Win Double Header From Zion-Benion Team 4-1 and 8-5 The kick-off breakfast had a big turnout Sunday morning, making it a huge success as all of us had hoped it would be. Although the weatner was not the best for golfing it didn't dampen the spirit of those hardy souls to get out there and knock that little white pellet around, and knock it they did! Of the forty-nine golfers qualifying for the twosome tournament, thirty-one had low nets of 79 or less. Looks as though a guy is going to have to keep shooting good golf to be one of the thirtytwo qualifiers. The games committee says to look at the bulletin board to find out if you qualified as they won't have the names ready for this column. The winners of the blind bogey in class A were tied for first between Frank Rourke and Jack Moss with 80's. Third place went to Earle Seeps with 85. Class B winners also had a tie for first between H. Jensen and W. Sigman with 90's. Third place went to H. Reihansperger with 93. Low net winner was George Yorgen 77- 10-67, John Falcon 80-11-69. Next week the battle is on! Little League Notes Because the Dundee-Libertyville double header was rained out, McHenry took over the North Suburban Conference lead by defeating the ZeeBees of Zion in both games of their twin bill here Saturday. These games were won on some great pitching by Paul Morenz, who pitched the first game, and on the steady pitching of Bill DeCicco, the winner of the second game. The Warriors' hitting also came through, as they had eighteen hits in the two games. In the first game, Morenz Jheld the ZeeBees to only one tun on six hits. Three of the six hits were by Smith, the first baseman, who leads the league in hitting and is now batting well over the .500 mark. He drove in their only run on a timely single in the fifth. The Warriors scored one run in the first inning on Paul Morenz's single, after Ted Freund had walked and stolen second. After Zion had tied the sumt m (he fifth, 1-1, McHenry . came back with three very welcome runs on four consecutive .singles by Smith, Farr, Joel Himplemann and May. Although Zion got their Bill DeCicco and Paul Morenz pitched no-hit games for the Warriors recently. ("Kibbe" Palmer and Mickey Johnson of Harvard) in our corner. Zion's Johnson got the loss as the final score was 4-1. Second Game Bill DeCicco got the win in the second game as the Warriors defeated the 'ZeeBees, 8-5. With this win, DeCicco has a record of 3-2 for the season. DeCicco looked like he had his stuff from the very start even though Zion scored three runs in the first inning. The runs were scored on three hits, including a broken bat single and a blooper double. McHenry came back in the second with three runs to tie the score. They took the lead in the following inning, scoring one run on three consecutive hits. In the fifth, after Zion had scored a run to tie the score again, McHenry once more took the lead, getting two runs on three hits, including back-to-back triples by Ted Freund and Paul Morenz. In the sixth, the Warriors widened the margin to four runs, scoring two more runs on a double and two walks. This made the score 8-4. In the last of the seventh, a single and a double by the first two batters scored a run for the ZeeBees. But DeCicco put down the uprising by striking out the next three batters. Nelson got the loss after he was relieved in the fifth by Young. Zion's Smith had three for four agairrf "helping average even more.
