M.C.H.S. band director. w°re recognized most appropriaiely when about 125 band students, their parents and friends gathered in the high school cafeteria last Thursday night The occasion was the annual band bahquet. and this year the central figure was Mr. Yanda, who has so ably headed the music department for a quarter of a century. The dinner theme, from the opening address by Band President Janet Eckstein lo the closing presentation^of a' gold, inscribed watch, carried out the one purpose intended' by his students, to honor a man who had given so greatly of his time and talents in their beha.lt for such a long period of time. Presentation of awards was made bw Supt. Carl Buckner, Assistant Supt. M. L. Schoenhollz and Principal Marvin Martin. Mr. Yanda was assisted in awarding contest pins by Virginia Peterson, who heads the Modern Music Masters organization. One of the highlights of the evening came when Miss Peterson read an original poem written by herself and Mary Jane Pitzen, giving . highlights and humorous details in the life of Mr. Yanda. The fact that the popular director returned to school just two tl a y s previously after many weeks of convalescence after being confined to the hospital, only made the occasion more meaningful.
