1 *1 •c Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, May 31, 1962- SO I HEAR... Thought we would see quite a battle between the Shamrocks and Johnsburg Sunday. As it turned out, the visiting Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and went on to a shut-out, 8-0. Eddie Mack was on the mound for the Tigers and went all the way to a strong finish. He must have had the batters fooled 'cause most of" them were not taking a good, sure cut at the ball. For the past couple of years several good baseball men have had an idea that Mack could go places in organized baseball if the chance were given to him. Marion Central's Most Valuable Neither team did too much hitting, but it was proved once more that you cannot give those Tigers an inch in the way of bases on balls, errors or omissions. When you do, they pounce on you like real Tigers. Leon Schmitt, Johnsburg's classy third baseman, got the only extra-base hit of the day. It was a booming triple that went way deep. It appears the Shamrocks are cn the way up in baseball, but must make a few improvements besides getting a lot of batting practice. They can be a real good ball team before this season ends. No mater how you look at it. that Johnsburg team is the one to beat in this county league. They have the guns. That was the largest crowd McHenry has seen at a baseball game in many a day. We wouldn't know the youngestfan present, but honors for the oldest must ' go to Peter Freund, Jr. He watched his sons, (Harold and Joe for many years, now watches his grandson (Gene) play ball. Hope he can hang around to see some great-grandsons' perform. We really wanted to rib our Cub fan friends about their Billy Williams not knowing the name of one of the coaches. And we wanted to mafjfi_sornething of a picture**^ saw of a Cub player simng dejectedly and remarking "Anybody for golf?" But that was before the Twins from the land of sky blue waters lowered the boom on our Sox on Sunday. Awards to outstanding athletes were presented Marian Hurricane students at last week's spring sports banquet. From left: Jim Shields, Harvard baseball most Valuable; Jon Leonard, track Most Valuable; Gerald Srriith, Fathers Club President; Dick Collins, VFW, who presented Most Valuable basketball player award to Rex tester, McHenry; and Cameron Clark, McHenry, golf ' Most Valuable. Cam Clark Ties For 3rd Plaee In State Golf Meet Cam Clark of McHenry, and a senior in Marian Central Catholic High School, tied for third in the Illinois State High School Golf Tournament at Urbana. The meet was played at the Urbana Country club. Clark shot a 39-39 for 78 the first day and a 41-36 for 77 on Saturday, giving him a grand total of 155. The winner was Gary Flowers of Pickneyville who shot 151. Second place went to Bob Abbott of Freeport who shot 154. One hundred nine golfers, all of whom qualified in the St^te District Tournaments, participated in the tourney. Cam had shot a 76 in the district' meet at McHenry to qualify. Coach Joe Gubbins of Marian Central accompanied Clark to Urbana. The Urbana Country club is a par 72 course and is noted for its narrow fairways and long rough. Little League Notes McHenry Country Club News by John Varese It puzzles us to know why these big league pitchers, with the benefit of weeks of tra'nin? in the sun, cannot get in there and pitch a ball game. Seems to us they are trying to be too cute with the comers instead of firing that /ball over the plate with something on it. / From the Michigan College of Mining and Technology we have a list of varsity letter winners in various sports and find that George M. Wilkinson of McHenry won his letter on the rifle squad. McHenry has boys scattered over a wide front and it is always nice to hear a good word about them. Tony Espey received his letter in wrestling at Whitewater and we expect to hear more of him in the next three years.
