Thursday. July 26, 1962 THE McHENBY PLAINDEALER McCullom Lake DAHLENE JENSEN CROWNED MISS McCULLOM LAKE Eve Leveaqne Her blonde curls shook with emotion as six year old Darlene Jensen was crowned "Miss McCullom Lake" before a crowd of hundreds at the beach on Saturday night. Second place was awarded to Margie Olsen with Terri Wilson placing third. Details of the event appear elsewhere in the Plaindealer. It was a lovely show and the fourteen little girls who promenaded before the large audience displayed their ability to appear before the public. Fourteen small lads vied for cash prizes in the bike contest with son, Matt Levesque, taking first place with trike trimmed as an airplane with a 6 foot wing span. Second place went to Billy Schmidt as a knight and his bike trimmed as a dragon spouting fire. Terry Brendle placed third as Freddie Flintstone in a cage with a dinosaur mounted on top. Other contestants were Steve Kinsey, Robin Rushmore, Jimmy Hocin, Michael and Steve Mai, Bruce Walter, Brad Whitney, David Egerstaffer, Bruce and Roger Thacker and Donny Parenti. Judging for this event was done by Mrs. Mae Mytnik of Chicago, Mrs. Naomi Mereness of Cooney Heights, and Miss Catherine H o 11 o n. Assisting Mrs. Louise Hammerstein were 'teen helpers Mary Beth Luto, Nancy Burg and Nina Tomasello. Each entry was given a shot at the ,'penny pot", also. It would be impossible to list the names of everyone who contributed so much in time, money, and talents to insure the success of this most outstanding summer festival. Although clouds threatened to dampen spirits, the wind and bright sun brought smiles back to everyone's face. It was a splendid example of community spirit and Myra Murray and Ed Hammerstein can be thanked for a good job --WELL DONE!! On Crutches, But Game In spite of a broken right leg, Karen McKim's smile never falters. This young miss was the first to win the title of "Miss McCullom Lake" some years ago. She fell while riding her bike and will be incapcitated for a few weeks. On Sunday, her parents and the youngsters left for Excelsior Springs, Mo., for a few days. They will be home the end of this week. In the interim, Karen is getting TLC from grandma and grandpa-- the Wally Hojnackis. (Boy! Can he do the "twist"! Welcome Mat Is Spread A hearty welcome to the village to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bergstrom who occupy the "kozy kottage" at the corner of Oakland and W. Parkview. They are retired from active employment and come to us from Lake Worth, Fla. About three years ago, they spent their honeymoon here and became so entranced with the community, they decided on this for their permanent dwelling. They would love to meet their neighbors, so why not stop by and say "hi"! Screwy Dozen Still Breathing Requests for a reunion of the Screwy Dozen club have been coming to this reporter so we will take this opportunity in print to get Frank Rourke "on the ball" to make the arrangements. One couple, Rosie and Pete Kaminski, of Wisconsin will motor down here for the soiree if it is held after Labor Day. How about it, members, want that "good old time"? Lucky Thirteen!! Thirteen lucky people sat down to "break bread" with patriarch Theodor (Pa) Olsen at the head of the table. His lovin' Sally was at his side, beaming and playing the gracious hostess. The table was spread at an inn in Twin Lakes, Wis., where Pops provided a champagne feast for HIS kids and HER kids! Gathered about the festive board were Marge and Ole, Shirley and Art, Evie and A1 Nelson, Marge and Mel Tichy. this reporter doing a solo with Jake on his flying weekend, and Betty and Nick Tabor. The repast was sumptuous and you would never guess that Pappa turned 79 just before midnight. It was unfortunate that the Charles Temples were unable to come. He had been ill for several weeks, had just been released from St.r Anne's hospital and Gert wouldn't leave him. and niece and nephew, Dawn and Danny Kuper. The wee ones feasted on hot dogs, chips 'n' salad, lemonade, and a huge chocolate whipped cream cake. The guests toured the area in the American Legion 40 and 8 Voiture "train" which fortunately, needs no tracks! Summer Visitors Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Peisha were thrilled with a visit from Floyd's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ruleman of Eagle River, Iowa, recently. They were here for three days and took in one of the Little League games at the beach. It was the first, time that Mrs. Ruleman had witnessed little guys playing such professionaltype ball and she was duly impressed. Visitors to the PeiSha home last Thursday were Bessie and Lucian Porter of Northbrook. Nomad News Summer is the time for making like a "nomad" and Shirley and Len Jensen, Sr., did just that when they motored to Chippewa Falls, Wis., recently. They toured most of upper Wisconsin and ended up at Rosie and Pete Kaminski's place for a "high weekend". The quartet went night clubbing and rehashed old times. The Kaminskis are former residents and still very much in the heart of our early pioneers. Congrats to the grandparents of our darling new "queen" Darlene! Darling Darlene is a fitting phrase for this charmer. Lake Restoration Fund A call from Gene Piotrowski informs us that lake restoration should be done before summer's end to make the work effective. It sterns as though Lakeland Park and West Shore Beach are coming through with the "loot", but our residents have been a bit 'close". Donations for this most important work can be brought to Gene who is available during his convalescence, made to the Cullom-Knoll, the Ladies of tfre Lake or directly to Res t o r a t i o n F u n d , M c H e n r y Bank. As little as one buck per family would provide enough funds to carry out the project! Michigan Trek Ken Nelson had good opportunity to try out his long distance driving when he and grandad "Papa" Clayt drove to Battle Creek, Mich., to visit with other segments of the family--namely Cliff 'n' Glad and Mar and Don. These two sons are doctors and Ken hopes to follow in their footsteps. The young and tfcje senior Nelson arrived in good shape and were due to be home yesterday. Elsie "batched" it while they were gone and donated her competent help to the summer festival. Natal "Da*e" and Mat. Lately there seems to be a game of "musical houses" going on. It started with the Doctor Ruggeros moving into their new home on Lake Shore Drive. Then the Sam Lamonts moved into the former Ruggero house. Then the Mel Selleks moved into the former Georgeson house. And now I understand the George Sorensons of Arbor Road have sold their Page Herat house and will move into the fcrmer T., P. Mathews house on Lake Shore Drive and the T. P. Mathews will move into the model home in Oakwood Shores until their new home in St. Francis Heights is built. At this point I am thoroughly confused and I'll leave it up to you to figure out. She has been laid up with a broken ankle. Patrolling Roads? If any residents of Hickory Falls wonder what I was doing hiding up and down the roads last Friday night, let it he known, I was not patrolling the loads. I was lost.
