Pag© Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, August 2. 1962 SO I HEAR... From beaiitiful W r i g 1 e y Field we get a sideline on the All-Star game played Monday. Tom Bolger saw the game and, on the way out decided to buy some penan ts to take home to his children. How was he to know those penants were holdovers from the last All-Star game played in Wrigley Field in the year of 1947 until he unfolded them on the way home? Never saw the grass so green in August. Great weather for lawn mower sales, but watch for big sales on swim suits. Rain on Sundays seefhs as sure as chicken on Sundays in hospitals. John Knox was all smiles as he brought in a report on the Shamrock victory over the Johnsburg Tigers last Sunday. John says he has been on the team seven years and this Is the first time he can remember beating those Tigers. Last week we told you that Dean Hargis has been named head football coach at MCHS. From our observation of Dean last year, we join many close followers in the belief that lie will do a bang up job with the team. He is a big fellow with football written all over him. We wish him all the luck in the world and know he will get the job done if he has the material. Coach Hargis will also handle the Soph wrestling squad. Cliff Fulton will be back as varsity basketball coach and take charge of the Soph track team. Chuck Cuda will be working with Soph football and the golf team. William Hutchinson continues as varsity wrestling coach and switches to freshman football. "Mac" will be back at his post as athletic director and coach of cross country track. John L. Mesching has Soph football and possibly freshman wrestling. PONY LEAGUE A new home-run record in Pony League field was set by Ken Frost (Giants) when he lifted his 12th over the fence in the game with the Braves last Tuesday. This broke last year's record eleven held by Tom Blake. Ken added three more homers to his collection in 'subsequent games with the Sox and Cards, and the Giants wind up the season with first place guaranteed. A recent and welcome addition to the Pony League field is new scoreboard equipment donated by George P. Freund, Jr. Recent inclement weather and tournament participation has necessitated some schedule changes. Following are the games remaining for this season: Sox - Braves -- Thurs., Aug. 2 -- 6 p.m. Cards - Giants -- Fri d a y, Aug. 3 -- 6 p.m. Cards - Braves -- Sunday, Aug. 5 --* 1:30 p.m. Sox - Giants -- Sunday, Aug. 5 -- 3:30 p.m. - Sox - Cards -- Monday, Aug. 6 --.6 p.m. Giants - Braves -- Tuesday, Aug. Y -- 6 p.m. Sox - Cards -- Thur s d a y. Aug. 9 -- 6 p.m. Northern Mini Bowmen News Northern Illini Bowman will have a demonstration of the Arts and skills in precision Archery Saturday, Aug. 4 ai 6 p.m. on the corner of Rts. 120 and 12. This demonstration will be free to all. Sunday, Aug. 5, there will be a club shot and corn roast. Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The picnic will be all afternoon. The publicis invited, come one, come all. Northern Illini Bowman have been challanged by McHenry Country Club -- Archery against golf, which should be very interesting. More details on this later. Don Seaton's duties will be wfth varsity track and freshman football. Jack Thomas will work with varsity football and Soph basketball. A new man, Richard Rabbitt. former coach at St. Mary's of Woodstock, will assist with varsity football an,d Soph track. So, it seems McHenry high is all set for the coming year of sports activity. And it won't be long before those husky football men will be hard at practice. There was a big question on the bet so we turned it over to our attorneys. Trouble all these years is that the attorneys want 33% per cent for handling the case and nobody .knows how to split 4 bits up that way. The McHenry Pony League will wind up the season on Sunday, Aug. 12, with appropriate festivities, starting at 1 p.m. Keep this date in mind. We will remind you again next week. We wish to thank Chuck Peterson for prompt payment of a little wager on the All- Star baseball game. What Chuck didn't reckon with was the appearance of White Sox pitcher Ray Herbert on the American League team. Too bad Ed Doyle was out of town. It could have marked the first time in history that we won a bet from Lucky Doyle. Rome, at its peak of power, maintained 583 permanent garrisons, manned by 645,000 soldiers, to hold out the surrounding barbarians. Daily Pinupi* Life must have been a weary trek. SHAMROCKS TOP JOHNSBURG 8-3 HERE SUNDAY Benson Hits 3-Run Homer; Schroeder Gives Only 4 Hits The McHenry Shamrocks, behind the . pitching of Bob Schroeder and the hitting of Rog Benson and Dave Klapperich romped to an 8 to 3 win over the Johnsburg Tigers in a McHenry County League game on the McHenry diamond last Sunday. ! The Shamrocks g<Jt three big runs in the first inning as Bujak walked and went to third on a line single to left by Klapperich. Then Big Rog Benson came up and really teed off on one of DeCicco's fast balls. The ball sailed high over the scoreboard in left field as all three runners scored. Johnsburg tied the game in the fifth on walks to Schaefer and Hiller, a two run double by Lloyd Freund and a single by Huemann. Schroeder then settled down to get Leon Schmitt on a tap to third and then allowed only two base runners the rest of the game. Bob pitched a whale of a game as he allowed orSy four hits and struck out eight. He also scored the winning run in the sixth as he led off with a single, advanced to second on a walk to Bujak, went to third as Gene Freund forced Bujak at second, and scored on Klapperich's single. Put Game On Ice McHenry put the game on ice in the eighth as they scored four times on two hits, a walk and three Johnsburg errors. John Knox started it off with a single. As Schroeder bunted, DeCicco threw wild to second and bath runners were safe. Bujak then got his fourth walk of the game and that left the bases loaded and nobody out. Ted Schaefer came in to pitch and Gene Freund grounded to short, but Jack Schaefer bobbled the ball and all hands were safe. Dave Klapperich then got his third hit of the game to score Schroeder. Benson grounded to third, but Bujak scored as Schmitt threw wide to the plate. Gene Freund scored as Mike Collins hit into a force play at second and that ended the scoring. It would be hard to single out any one Shamrock as the star of the game. Everyone played a gopd game, there were no errors and everyone eached base at least once. Johnsburg Schaefer, ss H. Several months ago we mentioned that the Winchester Company had been working on the development of a new type of shotshell, containing a plastic "sleeve" to. hold the pellets together longer, thus obtaining a tighter, more effective pattern. These shells are now on the market under the name of Mark V. have not had a chan^e^jto try them as yet, but have talked to a few trap shooters who have, and they were more than satisfied with the performance of the Mark V's. They are available in target and field loads. < An interesting book titled "M anagement of Artifical Lakes and Ponds" by Dr. George W. Bennett, aquatic biologist and head of the aquatic biology section of the Illinois Natural History Survey has recently been published. The book gives a brief, concise view of the historical development of fish culture and its relation to modern techniques of management. The author treats the ecology of fishes in their natural and artificial environments and givfes theory and practical application for planning valid management procedures. Designed for the use of college students, professional fishery biologists, conservation workers, and sports fishermen, the book incluldes not only the most recent scientific advances and practical techniques of artificial lake and pond management but also the advantages and disadvantages of various management methods, such as fall drawdowns and biennial culling of fish. Pictured above are the Falcons, first place winners in the minor division of Little League. Standing: Norm Knaack, Manager; Ernie Muzzilo, Steve Rohrer, Kurt Knaack, Chris O'Brien. . Kneeling: Brad Pictor, Tim Lafontaine, Bob Rodenkirch, Tom Burton. Sitting: Jim Fultz, Terry Burton and Paul Pictor. Absent: Tom Warren. Little League Notes Ed Doyle's Bluebirds won the championship in the major league as Denny DePauw edged John Reinboldt in a pitchers duel 4-2 over the Eagles. The Eagles behind the steady pitching of Mark Domoto beat the Owls 9-2 to tie Otto Larson's team for second place. Keith Mereness turned in a two hit pitching performance as the Owls beat the Orioles 9-1. Minor League Norman Knaack's Falcons won the title in a close minoF league race. Pat McAndrews hit the minor leagues only "out of the park" homer in the final game of the season. The all star games turned into real thrillers as the Green Stars edged the Red Stars in both games 4-2 and 8-7. Dance Do not forget the Little League Dance at the VFW this Saturday evening. Approximately 200 golfers went off without too much trouble, and that is quite a treat in itself. While watching this crowd of people, I got an awful nightmarish thought. What if a guy got a hole in one on this day?? He might just as well declare voluntary bankruptcy. A news item taken from the Plaindealer files of July 8, 1937 says that Eugene Sayler celebrated the Fourth of July by winning the Pouse Cup in a 36 hole event. So 25 years later in the month of July Doc Sayler is still winning; this time, just last week by taking the President's Trophy. Nice going, Doc. I hope that 25 years from now you win another event, and I hope you win it from me.
