"This is a story about a man who tried to be something he was not; who wasted his time, and asked for and got a lot of trouble. As it happens, he was a rascal to begin with, and in a range surge of perspicacity the people recognized him as such from the start. During his middle period he did nearly everything he could to behave himself, but he only confused the people and while confusing the people he also confused himself, with results that were predictable because they had been predicted." Hubert Ward is the man thus described by the author in the opening pages of 'Vrhe Big Laugh," the man who, in 1928, "went on the stage because there was almost nothing else for him to do." The story begins with minor examples of Hubert Ward's chicanery and moves briskly through the ruthless maneuvering whereby he obtains a foothold in the world of the theater, which he uses as a springboard to the- heights of movie stardom. His marriage, in its public aspect, at any rate, is a perfect one and ' serves to strengthen his fame and security in his profession; it seems to make a different man of him. The '(results," as Mr." O't^ara says, are "predictable," but the reader vkHI find as many surprises as Tfief'e would be it nothing had been predicted-- may find perhaps that his predictions have not been wholly accurate. He will also find a brilliant portrait of a period (the late twenties and early thirties) and of an industry and its special aristocracy, presented with the implacable candor and precision that chara c t e r i z e t h e a r t o f J o h n O'Hara. SOCIAL CENTER FOB RETARDED GIRLS AT WONDER LAKE A socialization center for retarded girls will soon be underway in Wonder Lake. Father Vanderpoel has donated the site of the old Christ The King church at Center Drive and Wonder Lake Road for the purj>ose of this much needed organization in that community. The public is aware of the necessity for companionship regardless of status in life and these children are in greater need of feeling that they belong than the normal child who has many more outlets for his activities. This organization will bo known as the Wonder I,akc Exceptional Girls' organization. There has been an awakened interest of late in exercise; due in large measure to the M'calization that the populace is perhaps a shade soft around the edges. Aside from the fact that many types of exercise are enjoyable the main dividends come from physical toning and strengthening. Exercise - - unless inordinately strenuous -- strengthens the heart, increases circulation and aids appetite and digestion by speeding up oxidation of fuel jjn the body cells. However, it is unwise for people who as a rule aren't overly active to attempt to cram a month's exercise into a single session.
