Pag# Ten THE McHENRY PLA1NDEALEH t Thursday, August 9* 1902 * McCullom Lake "SCREWY DOZEN" TO STAGE REUNION SATURDAY, SEPT. 15 Eve Levesque Though some of the zany nntics will be missing (such as the "batty ballet" routine staged by Hetty Baumbeek and Shirley Jensen), there will be fun and frolicking when members of the Screwy Dozen have their reunion on Saturday, Sept. 15. at Donald's "Emporium." The long awaited event will feature a buffet dinner and members will be notified by mail. Frank Rourke, who served several terms as pi'esident of the organization, is being aided and abetted by Mrs. Shirley Jensen, in getting oul of the correspondence. For a little background on this club, it seems that several couples (about six, we think) were "batting the breeze" one night shortly after World War II, when they decided to put their fun on a regular basis. The twelve people constituted the original "screwy dozen". From what information this reporter can gather one of their first civic enterprises was putting on a Christmas party for the local kids. (Not very many at that time.) Instead of frivolity, the group started thinking along the lines of civic improvement and started their "public games" to raise money for road improvement, snow plowing and the like. Hence, the transposition from a social group to a hard working nucleus of people concerned with bettering their community. There are many of the notables who are now deceased, but you can bet their memories will be revered on reunion night! to a bulletin from Gene Piotrowski. Barbara And Ken -- Now Mr. And Mrs. Brennan The threatening clouds in the morning dissipated in time for the sun to shine on the nuptials of Barbara Kwiatkowski and Ken Brennan as they repeated their vows in St. John's Catholic church, Twin Lakes, on Saturday. Details appear on the society page of the Plaindealer. About 200 guests collected at the American Legion home in the afternoon for a delightful reception, including Jean McDonald. Lil and Mark Ringelstetter, Dewey Fricke, Lorraine and Karl Blom. the Merv Schmitts, aunt and uncle Done and Bill Brennan with their youngsters and Joanne Reid, Nell Abney awd Jake and myself. Young Bill Brennan and Math Schied. Jr., both local boys, were handsome fellas in their White dinner coats and cummerbunds. They served the bridal party as ushers. For delightful entertainment, Mrs. Jim Wegener of Ringwood sang "I Love You Truly" and "Always." • Proud mother of the groom -- Do Brennan, looked most attractive in a fetching goSvn of pink with whtfe accessories. Both she and Muck went out of their way to insure a good time for all. decision was to be reached Monday night at a Chicago hotel. It" is all tied in with some type of competition between clerks of the chain of supermarkets of which Jean is an employee. As of Monday morning, she was one of the thirty-three finalists out of 247 competing stores. We sure are plugging for you, gal. Cullnm-Knoll Election, Aug. 16 Sunday's sunny weather was a deterring factor as far as members of the Cullom-Knoll Association were concerned because only thirteen members showed for the annual election of officers. President Don Parent i is calling a meeting for Thursday, Aug. 16, in hopes that this will be more convenient and not interfere with "play" time. The meeting will be at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. All who couldn't make it on Sunday, PLEASE plan on attending Aug. 16. Harry Berry was appointed custodian of the beach and beachhouse. For any information about the use of either, please contact him. Mark These Dates In Red! Social activities aplenty in the next month. First of all is the "fun and food" day at Camp Spojna (Polish Camp) on Aug. .. 19 which is being sponsored by the Polish Catholic association. They will "offer" gifts and there will be plenty to eat and music for dancing. The public is invited. The next event is the resuming of public games by the Cullom-Knoll building fund committee. The first one will be held at Whitney and Bernice's, Saturday, Sept. 1 startining at 8 p.m. This announcement is made by Frank Poledna, chairman. Last, but by no means least, is the annual cook-out sponsored by the McCullom Lake Sportsmen's club on Sept. 8 at the Johnsburg community hall, Johnsburg. Tickets will be available from any one of the members. Talented Kids Last week the Granath youngsters staged a production in their basement which was reputed to be quite good. Seems as though they did "Hansel and Gretel" plus an acrobatic show. Maybe we can get them to repeat and have some publicity on it. Attend Golden Wedding Festivities Vi and Ben Gates traveled to Piano on Sunday to attend of Ben's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Lee. • •• -r 850 Miles In One Weekend It is approximately 425 miles to Detroit, Mich., and that's a lot of traveling for one weekend. Anna and Roy Nye and the kids journeyed there "to visit relatives and especially to see Ann's sister who has been ill. She and her husband are Mr. and Mrs. Ben Goldstein. On the way home, the Nye entourage took the Skyway into Chicago's loop and paused for dinner by way of celebration for Brad's birthday when he turned 11 on July 29. Divine Five Days As you read last week, the kids and I departed for 5 days in our state c'apitol and we had a marvelous time. The trip down was uneventful but the golden wedding anniversary pleasant. Chrys got some valuable time behind the wheel on busy 66. When we arrived at our "diggings", at a motel, south of town, we were ready for a dip in the pool. What anguish when I discovered I had forgotten my bathing suit! A quick call to Jake at noon -- he put it in the mail, airmail, special delivery and I went swimming the next afternoon! Isn't that wonderful service? Monday night, our /Matt came down with a severe attack of tonsillitis. The little guy recovered in the daytime and relapsed at night. By Wednesday afternoon, he was line. We toured everything in Springfield and were duly impressed. We enjoyed the Lincoln home tour, the museum, the Capitol building, the Centennial building, New Salem State" Park, and Oak Ridge ccmetery. As one stands in front of the marker for his grave, emotion grips you and you can feel his presence. This man became more alive after death was the feeling we experienced. The jaunt was one of the most pleasurable we have ever enjoyed. With the hectic life we lead, the break in routine contributed rappori between the youngsters and myself. For a quick vacation trip, you can't beat this Springfield jaunt. If I haven't bored you to tears by this time, come see our vacation pictures and we'll give you the full treatment!! One little footnote: Springfield is a refreshing town to drive in -- no "cut-throat" stuff and drivers actually tip their hats! He was a division manager for an absorbent products manufacturer. Mass was recited Saturday morning in St. Lambert's church, Skokie, with interment in All Saints cemetery. In addition to „ his parents, he is survived by his widow, Shirley, three daughters, Karol, Cathleen and Barbara: one sister; his aunt -- Mrs. Wando Dyko of Spring Road; and one uncle -- Carl Lipke of W. Our hearts go out to Marie and Anton in their bereavement. The Walls Were Bulging At the Lowell Peterson home last Sunday when thirty-eight members of the Chicago Boy Scouts gang show appeared for fun 'n' sun. Lowell is production manager of this year's show which features a cast of 225 boys and men. The production will be a 3 hour musical and is produced and directed by Ralph Reader of London, England. Mr. Reader was a guest at Marge and Lowell s last summer and has another "invite" for this month. According to a missive received from Marge, Mr. Reader was smitten with our fair hamlet. Scooter Tosses Teens In Hospital An unauthorized motor scooter jaunt to Kenosha, Wis., ended in misfortune for Catherine (Renee) Sullivan, 18, and 15 year old Kathv Murray last Thursday afternoon. Renee is the younger sister of Mrs. Herb Roeske who has been visiting for a couple of weeks, and Kathy is Mickey and Earl Murray's daughter. The two girls decided to visit Renee's mother, Mrs. Sullivan, in Kenosha, Wis. On the return trip, they missed a curve on a gravel road. A passing motorist took the two to the Kenosha hospital where Renee was washed up and released. Her scratches were minor. Kathy fared not so well and required stitches about the head and on her left arm. Her parents brought her home on Saturday, some the worse for wear! More On Lake Restoration The copper sulphate which will kill the algae in the lake must be dumped before Aug. 12 or the program will have to wait until next spring. Bruce Muench of the Illinois Conservation Department will shock and test for fish population in the near future, according to Gene Piotrowski. More funds are needed and very soon! Please make your donation to Gene or directly to the local bank. Last week, members of the Griffins (the teen club) solicited the village and came up with $45 for the fund, so it is growing. Lakeland Park has done very well also. Here's hoping the goal of $500 is reached so the program can be carried out this year. Large Motors Banned From Lake Serious efforts are being made to eliminate the use of large horsepower motor on our small lake. Anything over 5 h.p. is "verboten"! Lakeland Park has taken steps to have violators prosecuted and we understand West Shore Beach is cooperating also. Surely our own residents are in agreement. With the amount of youngsters using the lake for bathing, these power boats can be dangerous. They also disturb the growth of fish and necessary plant life.
