Pag* Pour THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER SO I HEAR ... Earlier this summer, Peter M. Justen told us of a visit with a former McHenry ball player, a real old timer. This week we had a visit with thai old timer, Phil Weber. Way back in the year 1906 the McHenry Blues had a topnotch pitcher -- this same Phil Weber. He is an uncle of Mrs. Vaughn Jones. SHAMROCKS WW OPENER IN TOURNEY Swamp Harvard In County Meet; Play Johnsburg Sunday The McHenry tfiues were managed by Peter Weber and our uncle, Richard Walsh. This Richard is not to be confused with Richard B. "Dick" Walsh, "who later brought some great baseball and great players to McHenry. We have a picture of those old Blues and pulled it out. However, Pitcher Phil Weber had recently called on Bob Weber (the bat boy of those days) and then called on Bob's mother, Mrs. Nettie Weber, who showed him the picture. Gene Freund's two-run homer in the top of the eleventh inning, gave the Shamrocks a 7-6 win over Grayslake in their first game of the A. A. B. C. Tourney at Genoa. It was the third home-run of the game for the Shamrocks who have really started hitting the long ball lately. Six of the nine hits were for extra bases. Grayslake started "'the scoring in the first inning as the first two men singled, then with one out McRoy doubled to score two. Smith then tapped to the pitcher Schroeder, who threw to Freund at third and they had McRoy in a rundown. Gene tagged him out SOFTBALL NOTES We find such names on the team as. Jake Buss. With 18 lettermen returning, coach Parsley's team faces a rugged ten game schedule which includes Notre Dame of Niles, the state's sixth team of a year ago, St. George of Evanston, ranked number eight, St. Patrick's of Chicago, the team that tied Boys' Town, Nebraska 0-0 in Soldier Field last year, and Schurz, a quarter finalist in last years city league. Heading the list of returning lettermen are quarterbacks Bill Riley, Crystal Lake, and Wally Bowman, Huntley; halfbacks, all-state candidate Ed Crowley and Steve Sexton of Crystal Lake, Joe Blenner a speedster from McHenry, Jim Neumaier, Woodstock, and a basketball player John Corso from McHenry who will play football again after by-passing for 2 years to concentrate on basketball; fullbacks Joe Reinert, Crystal Lake and newcomer Joe Lundborg of Wonder Lake. Several stalwarts return to the line and they include centers, Paul Karls, McHenry, and Tom Amore, Spring Grove; guards, Scotty Karas, Crystal Lake, Dennis Forrest and John Heider both of Woodstock; tackles, Chuck Thillman and Dick Trownsell of Crystal Lake, Jim Gates, Woodstock, Jim Schaefgas and Steve Conerty of Harvard and sophomores Wayne Comeau, Wonder Lake, and Frank Schepers, Crystal Lake; ends, Peter Parker and Cope Bradford, Woodstock, Gary Beiers, Wonder Lake, Gary Walsh, McHenry, and Ron Reckamp. Harvard. All games will be played in (he afternoon and home games will be played on Marian's new field on the school grounds. Practice Schedule At Marian Announced On Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. three area dentists will be at Marian to fit each football player with a mouth protector, which is now a requirement under the rules of the Illinois High School Association. Because of the personal nature of a mouth protector each player will be required to purchase one for $5. This includes an insurance policy for the teeth underwritten by the manufacturers of the mouth pro-, tectors. They will be fitted free of charge Aug. 15th. If any boy is not able to be I here on August 15th he will be personally responsible to have his mouth piece fitted before he can practice football. Uniforms will be issued to1 all varsity candidates Saturday/ Aug. 18, at 9 a.m. Issuing of varsity uniforms is by invitation only. However physicals for all candidates will be given on Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. Any boy not present at this time must secure his own physical before he may practice football. Uniforms for all non-varsity players and freshman candidates will be Aug. 25 at 12 noon. Football practice for the varsity squad will be held twice a day starting Wednesday, Aug. 22. The morning practice will be at 8:30 a.m. and the afternoon practice at 3 p.m. All senior players, except quarterbacks, will be excused from the afternoon practice for the first four days. McHenry Country Club News by John Varese The championship tournaments, both club and handicap, are coming down to the wire and the pressure will be showing on the boys in the final round this Sunday. The leaders of both tournaments, Art Jackson in the club and Dick Freund in the handicap, have maintained their positions from the first round, but it will have to be said that it can be anybody's tournament at this point. Paul Overton has Mr. Jackson by the shirt tail and knowing Paul, he is not to be denied his chances, because he just doesn't shake loose that easily. In the handicap championship, Jack Thies has come roaring into the semi-finals with the speed that I'm sure he wishes he could instill in a couple of nags that he knows, and has pulled up into a tie with Dick Freund in first place. Close behind these two gentlemen comes Jack Smithson, a 20-handicap man that has been hitting the ball real good and is a real threat. If you look real close behind these three guys, there is another threat known as ,'down the middle" Nell is, who* is a first class spoiler. He travels a path down the middle of each fairway, and if you ask him if he has ever Thursday# August 16, 1962 Marian Central Catholic " Football Schedule 1962 Sept. 16 - of Rockford, Sept. 22 - go -- 2 p.m Sept. 30 - Miles -- 2 p.m. Oct. 7 -- St. Boylan Central -- 2 p.m.--Home.
