Games, ice cream, pop, and a fancy cake was a baseball player on top all helped to make a little boy tired but very happy. Wonder Lake was thrown into a turmoil last Sunday night when Mrs. Joan Spielman reported her 3 year old daughter missing about 6 p.m. Fire department, rescue squads, police, and all neighbors including Gait Airport began the search. Karen's father had gone to Chicago on a call and could not be located at the time. Every inch of the area around Wonder Woods was searched including the lake but no Karen. When her father returned to Wonder Lake late Sunday night his embarrassment knew no bounds when he saw all the confusion. He had taken Karen with him to the city. Apparently he had called to tell his wife he was taking her and she had not heard him., Karen's only comment was "Why are you crying, Mommy?" Belshaw Named Officer In Tri-County Radio Club Lewis Belshaw of Wonder I^ake was named president at a recent meeting of the Tri- County Five Watters, Inc. in Williams Bay, Wis. The purpose of the club is to promote interest in Citizens Band Radio among its members, their families, local government, law enforcement agencies and thie general public. Former Resident Dies In California Mrs. Harley (Anne) Street, a former Wonder Lake resident, died on Wednesday, Aug. 22, in Richmond, Calif., after a lingering illness which has kept her hospitalized off and on for the past few years. The Streets were former owners of the Hickory Falls Gas Station and moved to California six years ago. Harley Street was a member of the volunteer firemen when he lived here. Friends who wish to send a card may send it to Harley Street, 347 W. Bissell Avenue, Richmond, Calif. Burial was in Richmond, Calif. CF Fund Drive The lives of more than £5,000 children with Cystic Fibrosis depend upon researchers finding a way to control this littleknown killer. Funds for research is their only hope. More than twenty-five friends of the McHenry County Chairmen, Neva and Larry Fuhrer of Wonder Lake, will- be asking for donations in our community next week. ings, matching thread with fabrics, etc. One of the best tours we sever had and all within bike riding distance. Kiwanis News The Kiwanis Club of DeKalb have invited the Wonder Lake Kiwanis to attend their farm field day to be held during the month of October. Anyone wishing to attend can get more information and make arrangements through Lenny Freund. Program for the evening was a talk on "Wills" by Frank Higgins. In this talk, Mr. Higgins pointed out the various ways in which a will can best serve the wishes of the person making it out. ,He noted that a person may draw up his own will, but statistics prove the will probably won't be any good. Following his talk, questions from the floor brought out some fine points about the legality of wills, and the competency of persons to make out their own directives of estate. Heading For Warmer Climes Two long time residents left our area in the past week -- one permanently and the other until spring. Mrs. Helen Jurgensohn sold her home and left on Wednesday, Aug. 22, accompanied by her niece, Jean Jurgensohn. also an ex-Wonder Laker. They are driving to the Florida Keys where she will make her home. Her niece and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Bud McMahon, live on the Keys and Helen will make her home near them. Mrs. Rose Murphy left on Sunday afternoon for Napa, Calif., where she will spend the winter with her daughter, Delores, and her family, who have a music store in that city. Fred Zandier and his family moved out of Wonder Lake last week. The children will attend school in Barrington, and they will make their home in that vicinity. Student To Model Miss Nancy^Zapel, daughter of the Harold Zapels of 5918 Mill Drive, will represent Woodstock Community high school as a member of the fashion board at a department store in Meadowdale. She will be modeling in her first fashion show entitled "Your Key to Fashions" on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m. Birthdays If the James Bixby house seemed to be rocking on its foundation last Saturday night -- it probably was. Laura, daughter of the Bixbys was 16 and that's always cause for celebration. A "few" friends helped her celebrate the occasion. Fifty guests -- give or take a few -- attended the party. Congratulations to Leigh Perry who is "sweet 16" on Thursday, Aug. 30. Pete P. laofce Dies Aug. 22 Peter P. Janke, 70, of 4708 Oak street, died Wednesday night in Memorial Hospital for McHenry county. Mr. Janke, a retired watchman, was born May 5, 1892 in Chicago and resided in Wonder Lake for four years. Survivors are his widow, Vera; a son, William Chicago; three grandchildren; a brother, John, California; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Kuchenny, Chicago. The funeral Mass was at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic church, McHenry, with burial in Christ the King cemetery, Wonder Lake. Vacationers It was reported to me that the vagabond Gallas families are at it again. They were seen loading up for another trek to the wilds of Wisconsin last week. According to my informant, the car was loaded with camping equipment, groceries, chairs, kids, and grownups. There was only one drawback. When everything was loaded there was no room for Ed. We couldn't find out whether they tied him on behind the car, draped him across the hood of the car or let him walk but I" think some provision was made for him. The master of our household is also vacationing this week. Leo left on Wednesday morning of last week to drive to Orillia, Ontario, Canada, where he is spending a week visiting his sister and her familly. She is the only member of his family near enough for him to visit. The rest are all in Holland. He will return Thursday night and I know I won't have half the work done that I planned on doing while he was away, but my intentions are good. Ringwood-Wonder Lake Home Makers Extension Unit At the regular meeting of the Ringwood unit on July 3, it was voted to change the name of the unit to the Ringwood- Wonder Lake unit. It was noted that the Ringwood unit was the oldest existing continuous unit and it would be unfortunate to lose that honor. However, it was felt that for potential members the Wonder Lake name should be incorporated into it since many are from that area. Therefore, the name was changed as noted above. Meetings are in the afternoon of the first Tuesday of each month. The last meeting was our annual picnic at the home of Mrs. D. Swanson. The lesson for the September meetings will be "What's new in the Home Furnishing Market." If anyone is interested in joining please call Mrs. Mardell Swanson at 385-2426. Christ the King Church News On Sunday, Aug. 19, Nanette Theresa Thweatt was baptized by Father Vanderpool. She is the daughter of David and Maria Theresa Perez Thweatt. Her Godparents were Robert and Bonnie Sweet. On Thursday, Sept. 6, the regular monthly meeting will be held in the church hall. Following the business meeting guest speaker for the evening will be Miss Gertrude Staudenmeier, who will speak on the needs of the missions. All members are urged to attend and guests are always most welcome. Birthdays Congratulations to little Miss Nancy Etten who was 5 last week and had a lovely party to prove it. Kim Street was an indispensable help to her mother last week when Kendall had his fifth birthday party. Grandparents Again Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wohnrade of Wonder Lake are grandparents of a baby girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wohnrade of McHenry on Aug. 17. The Amazon River is so wide at its mouth that it takes a plane a half hour to cross it. There are 1100 known tributaries, 10 of which are larger than the Ohio or the Rhine. It contains an island (Marajo) l a r g e r t h a n S w i t z e r l a n d , pushes its muddy water some 150 miles into the Atlantic, and has, with its tributaries, 30,000 miles of navigable waterways. Tides reach 600 miles upstream, where the depth is still 500 to 600 feet. All forests standing in U. S. now, if in a single tract, would reach 380 miles wide and 2,500 miles long, or 5 acres for each person.
