Nine months of school and only three months vacation was a big howl back in our barefoot boy days. But, times have changed, We find many students who are hapgjyto return to school. Perhaps it is because the schools offer much more today than way back when. This cool weather makes us turn toward football while liaseball is still far from past history. SHAMROCKS TOP DUNDEE 10-9 IN PLAY-OFFS Johnsburg Tigers Come To McHenry Sunday For Finals The McHenry Shamrocks played a seesaw battle with Dundee here last Sunday and came out on top by a score of 10-9. This eliminated Dundee from the playoffs, so next Sunday the Shamrocks will face their old rivals, the Johnsburg Tigers, on the McHenry diamond. The hitting stars for the Shamrocks were Paul Morenz and the Peterson boys. Paul had a two-run single in the third and Jim and Vera Peterson each had a double and each drove in two runs. Roger Benson went the route for the Shamrocks as he struck out five and walked only thr6e. The Shamrocks took second place in the AABC tournament at Genoa. Last Saturday they beat DeKalb 8-5 to qualify for the 'finals, but lost the game to Genoa by the same score, 8-5. Genoa then went on to beat the Southern winner two straight, by scores of 7-6 and 7-1, Sunday and Monday. The Past President's Tournament is now in progress and we are sorry to say that this is the final tournament of the year at the club. This does r.oc mean that the golfing season is over, but we certainly will miss the competition that is created by these tournaments. This is the way the first round finished up. Class A: E. Seepe over J. Moss; H. Sayner over E. Brown; A. Noonan over L. Consago; W. Weber over R. Johnson; E. Buss over G. Yorkan; H. Nellis over G. Sayler; F. Johnson over P. Meyer and T. Evans over J. Weyland and W. Donnelly over J. Etten. "Seventy" shooters for Sunday were: E. Buss, 68; G. Johnson, 69; F. Johnson 74; G. Yorgan, 75; J. Varese, 76; P. Overton, 78; and G. Kinsnla, 78. Larkin, 35. The Games Committee deserves a great hand for the huge success of their special event over the holiday j weekend. This best ball event saw some of the finest golf pia>ed and certainly some of the greatest shots ever made on this course. The event was wen by the threesome of Ed. Buss, G. Rink and B. Newkirk. These boys played a good steady game throughout the malrh and were bolstered by that big booming 68 shot by E. Buss. Nice game, Ed, but I think it's about time you gave your wife's putter back to her. Second place was won by the threesome of A. Jackson, G. Yorkan and J. Betzeman who gave the leaders a real chase. Art made one of the greatest golf shots ever made in this match, and George shot one of his best games with a T5. The threesome of J. Moss, D. Weber and J. Etten came from way back and led by !j. Moss with a sizzling 72 took third place. Another mention should be given to the lovely ladies who did a grand job in keeping score for this event. I'm sure they picked up some good golf shots along the way and perhaps a few strange words, too! A great time was had by all, and lets do it again! nniinite Th* Great Outdoors Q. Some of the jars I'd like to use for preserving have a musty odor. What can I do about this? A. Fill the jars with cold water in which some baking soda has been dissolved. This will soon freshen them. Wash in hot water and suds, rinse well, and they are ready for use. By: Russ Emerson, R.Ph. Many hunters feel that the 25 day season is fair, but do not have kind feelings toward those who are responsible for the daily shooting hours of sunrise to noon after the first day. Still, there are others who ai'e of the opinion that the waterfowl season should have been closed for a year or two, as was proposed earlier this year. As for the daily bag limit and its stipulations; all duck hunters we have talked with have one thing to say "Ridiculous." Personally, we feel that there must be a reason for all these new rules. Wonder what the experts have in store for us next year? The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Illinois will hold a field trial at the Wing 'n Fin Club Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9, starting at 8:00 a.m. both days. There is a lot of enjoyment in watching these trials and one can occasionally pick .up a few good tips on training and handling your own dog. Governors Regatta Planned By Boating Club The Chain O' Lakes Boat Club of Fox Lake is completing final arrangement for the 3rd Annual Illinois Governor's Cup Regatta. The well-known powerboat classic will be staged Sunday, September 23rd at Fox Lake. The host for the event is the Mineola Hotel on the West shore of Fox Lake in Mineola Bay. The exciting program will begin at 1 p.m. with testing, held beforehand. The Chain O' Lakes Club is the sponsor with the American Power Boat Association providing the sanction. Veteran boat enthusiast Commodore Ed Sullivan has engineered the entire program to thrill the thousands of spectators expected. Some of the Nation's fastest racing boats will make up seven classes of powerboat events. SK racing runabouts, E racing runabouts, 150 hydroplanes, 280 hydroplanes, Family inboard runabouts, and Unlimited Pleasure - craft single and dual engine, make up the program which includes the Illinois State Championships. Many out of state competitors are also expected to vie for honors. Last year's Governor's Cup winner, Ed Zender Jr. of McHenry will be on hand to defend his title, however Ed Olson, the 1960 winner of Garden Grove, California, is not expected. Officials of the club hope to see some of the keen West Coast competition. Trophys have been donated by businessmen of the area to the first three places in each class. Cash prizes are anticipated pending the outcome of the Governor's Banquet to be held at the Wing n* Fin Lodge near Volo on Saturday night, September 22. Due to previous committments Governor Kerner will be unable to attend, however, Frank "Dixie" Davis will present the large Governor's trophy. Davis is the boat safety supervisor for the Illinois Department of Conservation. Matt Waller of Fox Lake will be the honorary race chairman and Lou Eppel of Libertyville the official referee. Boat club officials expect one of the best regattas in recent years. By having all events packed into a one day program, instead of two as in the past, the club expects to provide a better spectactor show.
