HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS TELEPHONE HISTORY The first nation-wide telephone conversion in history took place at 8:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31, when the Bell System's Teletypewriter Exchange Service, TWX, changed from manual to dial operation. The change means raster, more c o n v e n i e n t t r a n s m i s s i o n o f written messages between the nation's 60,000 exchange teletypewriter machines, including 4,400 in Illinois. Since the conversion, calls between the machines are dialed just as telephone calls are. Previously, all TWX connections were made through manual switchboards. HOLSTEIN BREEDERS' PICNIC Illinois Holstein breeders will hold their annual picnic at Russinwood on Sept. 9. Russinwood is the very descriptive name of the farm owned by the long-time Holstein breeders, Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Russell an$ Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Russell. The Russell farm is located on Russell road, approximately five miles west of Elgin. Waltrip, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen G. Waltrip of Route 2, McHenry, completed recruit train- Page ?!•• ing recently at the Marine Corps Recruit depot at Parris Island, S. C. The training includes drill, physical conditioning, parades and ceremonies, bayonet training and instruction in other military subjects. Three weeks of training is spent on the rifle range, where recruits fire the M-14 rifle and receive instruction in other basic marine infantry weapons. Marines completing the training report next to Camp Lejeune, N. C, for combat infantry training. EASTERN ATLANTIC -- Thomas D. Schuster, engineman fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester J. Norton of 2911 West Benbrook avenue, McHenry, is serving aboard the heavy cruiser USS Newport News, a unit of the Second fleet and the North Atlantic Treaty organization (NATO) striking force which participated in a special exercise "RTfitide III," Aug. 17 to 20, in the Eastern Atlantic. The unit joined more than forty other ships, together with aircraft from four NATO nations for the four-day exercise in the Eastern-Atlantic. Vice Adm. John McN. Taylor, Commander Striking Fleet Atlantic, conducted the exercise. Other forces participating consisted of ships and aircraft from France, the United Kingdom and--^aircraft from Portugal, f Simulated nuclear and conventional strikels by carrierbased aircraft were conducted as well as numerous other exercises. The purpose of the special exercise was to test and develop he readiness of the participating^ ™ val forces Operating as a coordinated force. In the court of Police Magistrate Donald Howard last Thursday evening. Mitchell B. Nieb of Chicago paid a $15 fine and Howard Beadell of Carpentersville paid $10, both on charges of improper passing. Thomas H. Schaffer and Wayne Meyer, both of McHenry, were fined $35 each for reckless driving. Robert Boyle of Lakeland Park paid a $10 fine for blocking traffic. A $6 fine was paid by Christian Newkirk of McHenry for speeding. In the court of Justice of the Peace Charles M. Adams last Saturday, Philip Keith cf McHenry was fined $12 for speeding.
