Soybeans have one-half of leaves turning yellow with one-tenth shedding leaves. In the lower third of the state, two-fifths of the soybeans are still green while in the northern third three-quarters have yet to start turning yellow. Last week's weather hastened maturity and lowered bean prospects in some areas. McHenry Library Corner Main and Green Sts. 1 HOURS Friday Evenings: 7 to ft pjn. Now tile "Philosopher of the Forest" turns his attention to younger children and has written in "Sweet Sue's Adventures" a nature story especially designed for all beginning readers who love animals ana the outdoors. In clear and concise language, the author tells why a skunk behaves as he does, what he eats and how he reacts to other forest animals. The reader goes with the author on a series of hikes and finds adventure and excitement on each trip. He meets Sweet Sue for the first time when she is building her nest in early spring, and sees her last in the late fall when her young skunks are big enough to leave their home. Photographs taken in Sweet Sue's natural surroundings by Charles^Philip Fox, well-known animaland nature photographer, capture the charm and appeal of an animal which has alwavs fascinated children. THE JENNIFER WISH," by Eunice Young Smith. It was the wonderful sum- LESTER EDINGER'^ttier of 1908. For the four Hill children, living on the farm was like a dream come true. They explored the woods, the creek, the barn and the pastures. What a perfect place to ?nd a summer! The creek was shallow enough in spots for wading, deep enough elsewhere for swimming, fishing, sailing a raft. The boys could have a menagerie The girls could have a playhouse. The barn would hold all the pets they could accumulate, and cat, kittens, pigs and chickens were soon added to the family. There were no neighbors to complain about noisy games-- the children were as free as the air for two whole months! But the special attraction was undoubtedly the wishing well. The tale of the wishes made there and the -curious ways they all came true--how Holly got her pink parasol, how Kevin found his dog, how Jennifer finally used her wish, in dire emergency, for a most important occasion, how the summer ended with a magnificent surprise--makes a delightful book for both boys and girls to enjoy. "BOY BEYOND THE MOON," by Tom Allum. Guy Abbott first sees the mysterious planet Emperor in the glory of its purple streamers through Professor Harvey's telescope. When Guy meets the well known professor and is invited to his home, he can not guess that exciting consequences lie ahead. President of his high school astronautical society, Guy is delighted to learn that the professor is a' famous expert in the field of interplanetary travel --a theoretical" science, although many rockets have landed on the moon. The professor's greatest djream is to visit Emperor, which he has studied for years. One thing in particular puzzles him: What causes the unusual purple streamers which surround the planet? Professor Harvey has designed and built a circular spaceship, quite different from any of the rocket ships which travel into space. But the government agency in charge ot space travel has turned down his invention and plans to use an "approved" rocket to reach Emperor, Determined to fulfill his lifelong dream, the professor searches in vain for volunteers to travel with him to the unknown planet. Through a startling turn of events, the professor finds a crew, and Guy finds himself hurtling through space with a strange group of shanghaied men as companions. The exciting details of the young boy's journey to Emperor, his adventures on the planet and his discovery of the mystery behind Emperor's purole streamers make a breathtaking story, full of action and suspense. ADULT BOOKS "DOROTHEA," by M u r i e l Elwood. The tragic love affair of Sophia Dorothea of Celle and Count Philipp von Konigsmark, the Swedish soldier of fortune, has always appealed to the romantic imagination. In Muriel Elwood's capable hands, the story is treated with a practical realism in keeping with the time and place--the licehtious Hanovertian court at the end of the seventeenth century. QUARANTINE PROGRAM A full scale hog cholera quarantine program is in effect throughout Illinois. Ralph S. Bradley, director of the Department of Agriculture, said that on and after that date "all swine herds suspected of being infected with hog cholera will come under strict regulation, and violators of the quarantine will be subject to the maximum penalty provided under provisions of a state law known as the Contagious D i s e a s e s Among L i v e s t o c k Act." There are at least 650.000 blind children in the world today but, as yet, only about 40,000 are in school says the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness.
