Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, September 13,1962 SO I HEAR... In discussing the big league b a s e b a l l r a c e s w i t h W a l t Freund and reviewing a recent game between the Yankees and Angels, we remarked that you can't give those Yankees a break but what they would pounce on the opportunity and beat you. We got a real chuckle out of Wait's analysis, "Let 'em get a foot in the door and*, you've bought a vacuum cleaner." Those races to the wire this year are real good for baseball. The Yankees certainly have their foot in the door, but it hasn't swung open wide for them as in other years. JOHNSBURG WINS FROM McHENRY 6-4 IN PLAYOFF Tigers Play Miller Team At Richmond Next Sunday McHENRY COUNTRY CLUB by John Varese The McHenry Shamrocks lost their final game of the year last Sunday to Johnsburg, 6-4. Johnsburg scored four runs in the first inning on three singles and a long triple by Dick Hiller, then managed to hang on to the lead as. McHenry stranded 13 base runners the rest of the way. Bob Schroeder started for j the Shamrocks and was rein the National League, the i lieved by Roger Benson with Giants seemed to be fading, then put on a great stretch drive that may still put them across. We can't wait for that sport page each morning to see what the box score tells us about Charlie Hiller's hits, runs and especially the numerous double plays he either starts or is shown as the middle man. Somebody blew the foam off the Milwaukee Braves this year as their cups of fortune went flat. Manager A1 Lopez of our white Sox hasn't fared too well with his plans to win games on defense. Lopez would have been in his glory in the 1905 era of the hitless wonders. Why should he get paid such a fancy salary when our forum of grandstand managers would be willing to offer our inside information free. Namely-- the ball has been hopped up since 1905 and you need No. 3 and 4 hitters who can "smash the ball" as "Shooty" Thelen used to say when he caught Frank Freund's spitters. nobody out in the first. Benson pitched very fine ball as he allowed only one earned run the rest of the game. Johnsburg will appear on the Richmond diamond next Sunday. The McHenry Country Club will see a new type of golf played this coming Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16, featuring the Northern Illinois Archers of M c H e n r y C o u n t y p l a y i n g against members of the Country Club in a game called Archery Golf. The foresomes are made up of two archers and two golfers. The golfers play their regular game of golf but the archers must tee off with their bows and arrows. A good archer can shoot an arrow 200 yards or better and although an archer must give a golfer a stroke a hole, it is not an easy task to beat them. An archer holes out by hitting a target set off from the green which is 10 inches off the ground and 9 inches square. Frank Rourke, who accepted the invitation of the Archers says this could be a very interesting as well as a fun packed game. I hope Frank warned these merry gentlemen that there is not an open season on golfers. Come on out and watch these modern day i Robin Hoods and Friar Tucks pit their skills against our own sod busters and bring your own first aid kit. The second round of the Past President's Tournament was played Sunday and each round is being more hotly contested as they come down to the wire. This is the way it turned out Sunday. Class A. Seepe over Sayner; W. Weber over A. Noonan: H. Nellis over E. Buss, and F. Johnson over T. Evans. Class B: W. Siegman over J. Theis; D. Wever over G. Rink; H. Jensen over B. Blahey, and W. Donnelly over J. Larkin. Our 70 shooters Sunday were: D. Rosing, 71; A. Jackson, 72; E. Seepe, 73; P. Overton, 76; E. Buss, 77; W. Weber, 78; P. Meyer, 79; F. Johnson. 79; J. Varese, 79. Low Net Winners; --1 to 11: first place: D. Rosing, 71-5-66; second, E. Seepe, 73-5-68; third, A. Jackson, 72-3-69. 12 and up: first place, W. Siegman, 83-17-66;? second. H. Jensen, 83-16-67; third, R. Rode, 84-16-68. ft Outdoors The best way to get things off your chest is to tell your doctor, not your friends. Humor is the human element that keeps life from drying up, gives it freshness and flavor. He who makes somebody happy each day, He who gives heed to distress, Will find satisfaction the richest of pay, For it's service that measures success. Anonymous ALL - WESTERN HORSE SHOW AT WOODSTOCK There will be an All-Western American and Illinois Association approved horse show at the Circle 8 Corral, 2 miles south of Woodstock on Route 47 from junction 14 and 47, Sunday, Sept. 16. By Jack Walsh l!lilimilllllll[|llll!lll1lll!lll>t!l>i<l't«l<umil!|]MJIIIIIIlUI!l£llillill!: The Northern ^ftmi Bowmen have accepted a challenge from the McHenry Country Club to match their bows and arrows against golf clubs Sunday. Sept. 16. The first group will "tee off" at 1 p.m. with the archers shooting at blocks of styrofoam positioned about one foot off the ground and giving a one stroke per hole handicap. We have an idea that some golfers are in for a surprise, or rather a display of deadly marksmanship next Sunday. A thought just flashed by; Archery equipment may be adaptable to the golf links but who ever heard of hunting with a 9 iron? This should prove to be an interest ing and entertaining contest and the public is invited. All bow hunters and members of the general public are also invited by the Bowmen to attend an "Open House" Thursday, Sept. 20, beginning at 8 p.m. at the McHenry American Legion hall. Movies on hunting and conservation will be shown by Rudy Teschan of the Wisconsin Conservation Department with a general question and answer discussion following. There will be a trap shoot ! held by the Harvard Sportsman Club, located at the junc Marian's Hustling Hurricanes Open Season Vs. Boylan Marian's hustling Hurricanes open their fourth season with experienced players in almost every starting position Sunday when Bishop Boylan High School visits Woodstock for a 2 p.m. game. Before the game, Marian's new football field north of the high school will be dedicated, in honor of Mr. G. Harding who donated the land for Mar ian. The Most Rev. Loras T. Lane, Bishop of Rockford, will take part in the ceremonies The Viscounts of McHenry will entertain at halftime. John Corso of McHenry has been a pleasant surprise at halfback in practice sessions, giving the team a strong backfield. Marian's lack of depth in the line may pose a problem. Valuable Records Protected In Old Structures By New Process McHenry county has recently undertaken a new system of keeping records which is gaining in popularity. It is the inception of the modern development of microfilm, which promises to abolish the did fear of valuable records being wiped out through fire. Our own courthouse, like a majority of those built in the country, are of a vintage of 1900 or earlier when little was known about fireproof construction. Today there are reports of an increasing number of county recording officials throughout the nation who are microfilming sifch valuable personal records as birth, marriage and death certificates, tax records, wills, deeds and mortgages and other types of documents normally stored in a courthouse. The records are being microfilmed in duplicate, with one roll of film kept for daily reference and the other stored off the premises in an area safe from fire, explosion, or the like. The space problem was another deciding factor in McHenry county in the change to this type of recording, We have long heard the expression, "One picture is worth a thousand words." In this case, one picture of a deed to a valuable piece of property, safely tucked away in a fireproof vault may be worth a good sum of money. Local bowlers are swinging into action and a few scores have been turned in this week. As in the past we ask the cooperation of proprietors and league secretaries in sending in scores as early as possible. It would also help if you would write down first names. Our method of reporting the news may vary from time to time. Please list any unusual happenings. We would also like to give credit to low average bowlers when they go over their heads. Please send score sheets or news to Earl Walsh, 3429 West Elm Street. The season is here. Let 'er roll! McHenry Recreation Bowling with the Merrill Woolens Monday night, Elaine Cross picked up a 7-6-10 spare. Gene Schaefer's 239-621 was way out in front in the Business Men's league. In the Wednesday Night Mixed group, Len Thennes hit 213 in his third game for a 546 series. Herb Rothering had a 204 in 541. Tony Rebel started out with a 222 game and held on to go 16 pins over 500. Dorothy Cusack must have been happy with 178 pins in her second game after starting with never mind how many in her first game. Tomasello's Here are top scores re] ed for the girls in the T.N.T. League (How about listing the first names of those gals?) E. Mangold, 470; M. Smith, 449; E. Weber, 438; D. Hayner, 436; B. Hettermann, 432; D. Kibbe, 193. SOFTBALL NOTES A two run 7th inning for Bimbo's won the playoff championship over Hettermann's. With the score tied at 4 all going into the last inning, an error, a single by Bergloff and a double by Kurtz scored the 2 runs. Hettermann' scored a run in the bottom of the 7th on singles by Neiss and Brennon. The game was played on a sad note, one of our ballplayers and good friend, Ken Brand, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 2. Ken played for Hans' Tavern. The collection which is taken at every ball game was given to Ken's widow. We would like to thank all the fans who came out to 1 he games during the past season for their fine support and hope to see you all next year. B'mbo's (6) The picture above is a good illustration of the hard work that has been in progress at McCracken Field since August 22. The Warriors are striving hard to adjust to a new system, and the scrimmage held early Saturday morning seemed to prove that certain accomplishments have been made. Under game-like conditions the Red and White teams battled each other to a twelve and twelve deadlock. With thirteen seniors and six returning lettermen, the squad of thirty-three is working for that feeling of unity that is so necessary for team effort and timing. Any chosen eleven must be able to functi&n as one individual for team accomplishment. Although the picture shows the efforts of the entire squad, certain individuals are shown carrying out definite assignments. These are Bob Wahl; Tim Farr, Lloyd Smith, and Tom Trendler on downfield blocking assignments. Defensive End Joe Fino and Guard Fred Kusch are found hard at work. In the offensive backfield Q.B. John Rourk carries out his fake after handing off to H.B. Ted Freund. As in anything else the unseen individuals are just as important, and many times for important to the total effort. ^ The Warriors play their first game tomorrow night at Antioch. The Sophomore game will start at 6:15 p.m. and the Varsity at 8:00 p.m. Playoff Champions AB R H Kurtz, scf . . . 4 0 ?
