R., vie with each other for startling new achievements --and the headlines' that go with them --it is increasingly difficult for the average citizen to know where we stand in this competition. It is equally difficult to understand the purposes of the various "shoots" and ' probes," and to fit them into any overall pattern of accomplishment. This book provides a simplified score card or program with which, for the next ten years, you can follow the ^events as 1hey are announced. By understanding the function and purposes of Tiros, for example, the significance of a successful launching will be dear. With the calendar of events before you, you can anticipate and keep track of lunar shots. Mars and Venus probes, manned flights to other planets - all the hard-to-grasp even's planned for the future. £ Since its formation in 1959, the National Aeronautical and Space administration has accomplished many things, not the least of which has been to provide this country with a central, cohesive pro y-fflfi" around which the natioivs efforts revolve. It has been with the generous assistance of this i-gency, which provided photographs, data and advice, that Hthis hook was prepared. Most of. the background data has come from the NASA files and from the reams of testimony which its officers gave before the various hearings of the Senate Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences. Recognizing the need for this volume, many of the manufacturer of America's space vehicles provided drawings of the'r 9 more imaginative and advanced concepts, still unborn. "(iOI)'S HKirl TABLE," by I .eland Fiederick Cooley. Down from a remole mountain valley in Washington's Cascade wilderness rides a young giant named Jeremy God bold t. last born son of the patriarch of r. strange religious sect known as the Jakobites. ^ In the "sinful Sodom". Mill ' City, where his people are forced to trade twice a year for vital supplies, Jeremy is suddenly confronted by the embodiment of all his longings in ihe person of the attractive widow. Clara Logan, owner of Mill City's leading bar and restaurant. To Jeremy, who saves Clara's small daughter from ^ death beneath an overturned • l o g g i n g r i g . t h e e n c o u n t e r seems arranged by the hand of God. To the patriarch Jakob Godboldt . s e v e n t y-two-year-old founder of Ihe sect, it seems a snare set by the hand of the Devil. To lum berman Bart Mr- Kune and banker Lou Montague it seems an act of Pvovifw„ dence which will finally permit a friendly meeting with the "outlaw" religious groun in order 1o ?ffect the peaceful acquisition of a right-of-way through the little valley of High Table for the vitally needed, but politically dangerous, Trans-Cascade highway. * To Clara Logan herself the encounter seems the climax of an "ordeal-by-temptat i o n" in ^rwhich her character is being tried before the town, for she knows that once again she has fallen in love at first sight. Caught between her own deep need and the memory of her selfish husband's violent death in an illegal poker game ten years earlier, Clara struggles in a silent battle with reason and desire knowing that in the end desire will be the ^ victor. "PALS FOR KEEP S," by MSGR. Raymond J. O'Brien. The boys in Father Bermingham's parish are a strange mixture, and they all have their problems. One lad has done time in the reformatory. Another, deserted by mother and father, uses his beautiful voice to earn a living by singing cheap songs in disreputable saloons. Others have problems of home enviroment, bad companions, or other influences which lead them into difficulties and temptations. With all these' problems Father Bermingham shows a sympathy and understanding that wins the boy's confidence in his guidance. "Pals for Keeps" brings out clearly the fact that boys are human beings with human weaknesses and temptations. At the same time the story shows how these weaknesses can be overcome by understanding on the part of adults and the strength that comes from true religion. Life can be pretty complicated but still it can be taken in stride, as the boys in this story do. If charity beeiris at home, then certainly it should continue on' the highway. The Institute^ for Safer Living says that motorists for the most part drive to the best of their ability. Some drivers have less ability than others, but they cannot lie denied use of the highways because of this lack. If you're a good driver, be charitable and considerate toward others who may lack your skill. Probably they wish to avoid accidents as much as you. Help them do so.
