Had the water been as low all summer as it is now, we believe the property owners along that stream would have been down on their knees praying for a new dam. Twenty of McHenry's business men enjoyed an all-day trip on the Fox river on the ^passenger boat Gladene Thursday. The boat left the Riverside pier about 8 a.m. and returned at 8 that evening. The . trip included the following places in the order given: Fox river to Pistakee Lake, thence to Nippersink Lake, thence to Fox Lake, thence to Grass Lake, Lake Marie, Lake Catherine, Lake Bluff and Channel Lake. At Channel 'Lakeuthe b o a t w a s a n c h o r e d a n d a sumptuous dinner, partaken of above fifty feet of water. After dinner a return trip was made to Grass Lake and from there up the Fox to Wilmot, Wis. A stop was made on Pistakee Lake, where supper was enjoyed on board. An increase of $100 annually has been allowed all rural mail carriers on routes covering twenty-four miles or more, to become effective next month. When the rural mail service was established sixteen years ago, the annual salary was $200, but advances have been made until the $1,100 per year mark has been reached. The carriers are still hoping that they will receive the $1,200 asked for within a short time. A barn dance will take place at the new barn on the Dr. Vaupell farm, three miles southeast of this village, next Saturday evening, Sept. 14. •Heimer's orchestra will furnish the music. FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Sept. 14, 1922 M c H e n r y a n d W i l m o t hooked up in their third encounter of the season on the latter's grounds last Sunday afternoon and\ for the third time our boys were forced to suffer the sting of defeat, Wilmot galloping away with the afternoon's matinee to the tune of 6 to 2. Every Monday fresh meat, groceries and two mail deliveries, one from Woodstock and one from McHenry. Who says want in Ostend? Nicholas Weber was tendered a pleasant surprise at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Wolf Sunday, the occasion being his sixty-third birth day. A large group of relatives were present to enjoy an afternoon of cards and music followed by a delicious supper. C. Unti and son, Felicia, expect to leave some time next week for Italy to spend the winter with relatives. Mrs. Unti and the rest of the family will accompany them to New York to make their home with her sister until the others return. The 117 in high school and 143 in the grades, total enrollment of the McHenry Commuity high and the McHenry public schools for the first week, was 260, an increase of ten over a year ago. This year's freshman class of 56 is the largest in the history of the school. The senior class met on Wednesday evening and elected the following officers for the coming year: President, Floyd Foss; secretary and treasurer. Bertha Schiessle. Gladys Rietesel will serve as president of the Junior class, with Carolyn Steffes as secretary and treasurer. Joseph Schaffer, one of McHenry county's oldest residents. passed away at his home on W a u k e g a n s t r e e t , l a s t Thursday, at the age of 88 years. On the eve of his departure for South Bend. Ind.: where he will attend school, at the University of Notre Dame, Harold Knox was most pleasantly surprised by a group of twenty-five young people who gathered at his home at Terra Cotta to bid him farewell. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Sept. 16, 1987 A lovely wedding of interest to many friends and relatives here was solemnized at 8 o'clock this Thursday morning at St. Francis DeSales church at Lake Geneva, when Miss Lorraine Whiting, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Whitin°r, became the bride of Dr. William Nye, son of Dr. and Mrs. N. J. Nye of McHenry. After a month's wedding trip to Central America, they will be at home in McHenry. Frank Steinsdoerfer. 83. died at his home at Lily Lake Friday. following a year's illness. Auxiliary News The regular monthly meeting of the Fox River Ladies auxiliary to Post 4600 had a large membership in atendance on .Monday, Sept. 10. General Orders No. 2 were read from the V.F.W. Ladies auxiliary of the state and the title being used for the essay contest for the 1962-'63 year is, "What Can I Do For My Country"? We are hoping for a large number of essays to be entered from this community this year. Saturday, Nov. 10, a dinner honoring the department president, Lillian Bucznski, will be held at the Pick-Congress hotel, Chicago, with Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 16 as hostesses. Members selected to attend the dinner were Florence Svoboda, Irene Stoller, Dora Krocker and Daisy Smith. All members graciously accepted the appointment of Dorothy Reinboldt as secretary of the Auxiliary for the remainder of the year. Reports were given by Irene Stoller, membership chairman, and she reported that the dues are due as of Oct. 1; hospital chairman Kathy Fuhler announced the next Downey party will be Sept. 19: Americanism chairman Viola Schuble reported that our post and auxiliary received honorable mention for t h e A m e r i c a n i s m w o r k f r o m the Departmerit of Illinois; Youth Activities Chairman Sylvia Hess is unable to continue as chairman and Daisy Smith volunteered to assume the duties and promises the initiation and installation will take place in the near future.
