Sept. 27, 1962) Twice ToM Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Sept. 19, 1912 St. Mary's parochial school, which opened for the fall and winter term on Sept. 4, has an attendance of 120. A11 three rooms in the school are well filled. The enrollment of the public school on the opening day was 227. Out of this number sixty-four are attending high school, twenty-four of which are freshmen. This is the largest enrollment McHenry ever had. The beautiful new home of C. W. Stenger, on the corner of Main and Third streets, is fast nearing completion. The family plan to move ,into same, next week. Work on the foundation for the new block that is to be erected by Barbian -Bros, is now well under way. The new cement machine that is being "used is the center of attraction. Rev. E. W. Berthold, formerly stationed at New Brooklyn, 111., has been assigned to the Johnsburg parish and took up his work there Sunday. We are informed that Peter Freund, who a few years ago purchased the E. W. Wheeler farm just south of the village limits, and who since purchas- Johnsburg ANNOUNCE NEW MASS SCHEDULE AT ST. JOHN'S Bettv Bfittermann Effective Sunday, Oct. 7, the Masses on Sunday will be at 7, 8:30, 10, 11 and 12 o'clock. This will continue indefinitely. The 8:30 Mass will be a high Mass. Enjoyable Vacation Four young ladies from this area spent ten days recently enjoying the sights of New York and Washington. Patti Hiller, Elaine Weber, Joan Bauer and. Nancy Weber made the trip by plane which proved to be a most Unforgetable experience. The foursome sa<v shows, took in a lot of the sights and were scheduled to sit in on the United Nations assembly. They returned on Tuesday of this week. -- Now back to work, girls. Richmond Resident Succumbs Our sincere sympathies to Mrs. Norbert Hiller whose father, George Huff, passed away last week. Funeral services were held in Richmond on Saturday. Mr. Huff who was 63 at the time of his death, is also survived by two other daughters and two sons. His wife, Anna, preceded him in death in July, 1961. Hospital Patient Albert Adams spent a few days in St.. Therese's hospital last week. He is now home but has to watch his step for awhile. Girl Scout N>ws Troop 408 held its first meeting at 6 p.m. last Wednesday at the public school. Connie Thomas is the troop leader once again. Bonnie Meyers has offered her services as coleader. Committee woman for this season is Lu Oeffling. Selection of officers will be held next week. The troop discussed what badges they are to work on in the future. They are also planning a camping trip on Columbus day. It is scheduled for that day, that night and all day Saturday at Hawthorne Hills in Elgin. Slumber Party Hostess Kathy Barth was a hostess to several girls in honor of her twelfth birthday on Sept. 18. Besides the various goodies they consumed, the group "twisted" like mad. When there seemed to be nothing else to do the* girls went to bed. Being in a party mood were: Carol Ann Dehn, Melinda Long, Judy Walczynski, Sandra Thomas and Linda Mangold. Father Passes On Word was received on Sunday from Ohio that John Bugner passed away in Alvada. Funeral services took place in -St* Peter's church on Wednesday. Mr; Bugner and his wife, the former Anna Hoffbauer were married almost 59 years. Fiftyfour of these years were spent in Alvada. Besides his widow, he is survived by eight children, one being Mrs. Arnold Michels of Pistakee Bay, forty g r a n d c h i l d r e n a n d t w e n t y great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Freund of Johnsburg and Mrs. Steven Freund of McHenry also survive. Our community joins in extending their sympathies to the Bugner family in their time of sorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Michels. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Freund, Bill May and Alvin Freund left on Tuesday to attend the wake and funeral. Birthday Corner A very happy birthday to little Lu Ann Rudolph who was four years old on Sept. 21. Janice Ansell celebrated her "sweet sixteen" birthday on Sept. 23 by having a few girls over for a pajama party. Best wishes to both young ladies. Around the Town Mr. and Mrs. Bill Morgan and Hariett Bollweg of Elgin were recent visitors at the Althoff home. Recently Mrs. Walter Downs and Veronica Schaefer both of Chicago visited relatives and friends here. Pat and Mary Hiller and Mike and Eva Schaefer returned to their respective homes after spending sometime in South Dakota Dinner guests at the home of Mrs. Lena Pitzen last Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. A1 Plootje of Chicago. Later in the afternoon several neigh bors dropped in to see them. Laura Kominos of Pompano Beach, Fla., stopped in to see •Mrs. Helen Hettermann last Wednesday. She is spending a short vacation visiting her sisjter in Grayslake. The Johnsburg rescue squad was called out Saturday night to a scene near Adams garage when a car hit a utility pole. FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Sept. 21, 1922 A beautiful new archway of massive construction is now being erected at the entrance to the McHenry Country club grounds on John street. The archway is to be constructed of wood, cement and terra cotta and will be a thing of real beauty when completed, which it is hoped will be by October. Albert Purvey, caretaker of the McHenry Country club, has moved his family to this village from Woodstock and is now occupying the Owen estate house near the mill pond. James Brinan, aged sixty years, who had spent his entire life in this vicinity, ended his life in a shack located in the orchard of the old Frank Hutson farm, west of town, some time during last Thursday night. He shot himself through the heart and death must have been instantaneous. Kennet h Howard Howe, grandson of Mrs. C. S. Howard of this village, arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Howe, in Joliet last Sunday from Camp Eustis, Va; where he had been stationed the past four months. The young man hod seen foreign service, having been with the army of occupation in France and Germany during the World War. A welcome home supper was given in his honor at his home in Joliet. E. V. Johnson, manager of Swift and company's Lincoln avenue market, in company with four other employees of the Chicago meat packing concern. came out from the city Saturday evening with the express purpose of surprising "Dad,,' as Joseph I. Frett is familiarly known to Mr. Johnson. Their visit proved a happy. one and after recalling old times the youngsters were driven to the Fox pavilion for a dance or two before returning to the hotel for the night. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO , Taken from the Files of Sept. 28, 1987 Friends in this vicinity will be interested to learn of the marriage of Miss Pearl Freund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Freund of Crystal Lake, to Mr. Kenneth Marshall, son of Mrs. Agnes Marshall of McHenry, which took place at St. Thomas, Crystal Lake, last Saturday morning. Miss Edith Tesch, 46 years old, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Tesch, Friday, after an illness of several months. Miss Bertha Tonyan was honored at a miscellaneous shower Sunday afternoon, with Isabel Meyers and Eva Williams as hostesses. She will become the bride of Raymond Freund on Sept. 29. Dolores Vales entertained a group of her little friends Wednesday after school, in honor of her birthday. • Her gue'Sts were Bobby Miller, Barbara Simon, George Worts, Joyce Weber, Norman Taxman, Marion Grace Conway and Dan Weber. The palatial home of the late George Sayer located at Pistakee Bay, was purchased by W. R. Skidmore about a year ago and is now being remodeled into a suitable country home for Mr. and Mrs. Skidmore. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Mosher and Mrs. Fontanelle were called to Watseka, 111., last Friday by the death of his only brother. Publisher Renich has been over from Woodstock assisting Harry Frye at the Plaindealer office during their absence. Sixty-five students have been enrolled in the mixed chorus at the high school this year; with Miss Margaret O'Gara again at the helm. Dr. L. L. Thelen of Elgin, a former McHenry resident, was elected secretary of St. Joseph's hospital staff at the annual election of officers held last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. John Engeln announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Virginia, to Mr. Julius Thomas, son of Mrs. Warren Thomas of Woodstock, which will take place at the Congregational church in that city Oct. 16.
