PageFoux THE M&ENRY PLAINDEALER Wednesday, November 21, 1962 -^jr Wti&Ah. SO I HEAR The hottest news in bowling circles is a report that John Looze bowled a 500 plus series Yes, he did! Some fellows are "money bowlers". The grapevine tells us that a turkey was set up as a prize so, like a good Pilgrim father, John was shootin' for meat on the table for Thanksgiving. He just didn't reckon with the luck of one "Chuck" Peterson, who came through the timber with the turkey on his shoulder. When Leahy, Brennan and the likes were coaching Notre Dame football, their lineups were packed with names like Szmanski. Now they have a coach named Kuharich and we see" such prominent names as Hogan, Farrell and Kelly. -- .The Warrior basketball varsity got off on the right foot with a 74-63 win at Antioch. Now comes the Grant game here on Wednesday night of this week. Chicago reports a coin shortage -- pennies and nickels. We ftckve that same problem out here in the country, but it doesn't stop with nickels. - After so many years of writing reasons why we are thankful at Thanksgiving time, it is hard to come up with new ideas. b One thing1 we are thankful for is that Christmas isn't any closer than it is from this ppint. From here on we will hear -- "Buy now. Pay next year." We are always thankful for good health and thankful to be around for another Thanksgiving. The fellow who said "It is tough to grow old, but tougher not to" wasn't just flippin' his Bp. We are thankful for good friends and that friendship still rates tops for us in our formula for happiness. We are thankful that tolerance in its many phases is gradually smoothering smallness. We are thankful when the barber asks, "Wet or dry?" It gives us a chance to ask for a little moisture -- just enough to keep the hair from covering our eyes. We are thankful for a Thanksgiving thinner invitation to dine in our baby sister's Ijome (Chicago). Bet that kid will set up a feast that will show 'em all -- a dinner to end all talk of wonderful meals! We are thankful for all of God's blessings and the right to enioy those blessines as this Thanksgiving Day of 1962 approaches. Daily Pinups There are those who lose their balance and marry; there are those who marry and lose their balance. MCHS VARSITY CAGERS BEAT ANTIOCH 74-63 Grant High Teams Come To McHenry Wednesday Night The 1962-1963 edition of Cliff Fulton's McHenry Warrior basketball squad staged a determined second half rally at Antioch last Friday to defeat the Sequoits of new head coach Roger Andrews by a score of 74-63. Some very excellent rebounding by Joe Fino, and spirited play by John Rourke and Don Meyer in the last two periods greatly contributed to the victory. The Warriors had difficulty getting their offense in gear in the first quarter and feli behind by a score of 18 to 11. But Rourke found the range in the second quarter as he personally tallied 10 points and things began to look much brighter. During the period, however, the home team was able to keep pace with the Warriors and left the court at intermission with a 41 to 35 lead. Th» Warriors started the third period with a string of 12 straight points, and from that time on the situation looke:l to be under control. Don Meyer hit three shot*- from 20 feet and Fino had two baskets and two free throws in the third quarter. Meyer continued to score readily in the. fourth period and got, assistance from Rourke, each boy scoring at crucial times. Rourke led all scorers for the evening with 10 field goals and 3 free throws for a 23 point total.. Meyer totaled 15, getting 11 in the second half rally. Big Fred Kusch followed with 11 points for his evenings effort; but he sat out much of the game because of 4 fouls in the first half. Coach Fulton was pleased with the work of Dick Jelinek who took over for Kusch. Fulton expressed a thought in the lccker room after the game that substituting freely throughout the entire ball game was a definite factor in determining the outcome. The next Warrior game is Wednesday night, November 21, in the local gym. The McHenry Warrior froshsoph basketball team opened the 1962-'63 campaign with a well earned 53-49 victory over Antioch last Friday night at Antioch. A free throw by Rod Mauch and key baskets by Ken Lawrence and Rich Smith in the last minute assured the victory. The game was a nip and tuck a f f a i r f r o m t h e o p e n i n g whistle. The local boys held a first quarter lead of 15 to 10, but Antioch carried off a 30 to 28 lead at half time. Richard S o d a , M c H e n r y f r e s h m a n , came (up with some terrific defensive plays in the first half and converted two of them into breakaway field goals. The shooting of Rich Smith of the Warriors and Bernie Smith of Antioch was another of the first half highlights. McHenry was able to outscore Antioch in the third quarter by a 12 to 10 count, so the last stanza began with the score all knotted up at 40 - 40. Rich Smith led the Warrior point production with a total of 20, followed by Mauch with 10 and Gary Lockwood with 10. Lockwood sat out a considerable part of the second quarter because of fouls. Bernie Smith was high man for the Sequoits with 15 points. Lockwood and Lawrence did a good rebounding job for the Warriors. McHenry (53) FG FT F Pts R. Mauch . 3 4 3 10 K. Lawrence .... 3 0 5 6 G. It's better to see the point than to get stuck. A comma is the character that divides "woman as pretty, generally speaking", and woman as pretty generally speaking. The McHenry Junior Jaycees bowling league went to Mc- Cormack Place in Chicago Saturday to see the World's Invitational bowling tournament. About sixty boys and girls made the trip, being accompanied by Mr. Joe Kuna, Bill Long and Bob Freres. Many of the boys and girls talked to a number of the bowlers and received autographs from such stars as Marion Ladewig, Marge Merrick, Don Carter, Pat Patterson, Glenn Allison, Bill Lillard, Billy "G" or Golembiewski and Dick Weber. Some of the highlights were games of 268 by Andy Marzick; 265 by Bill Lillard; and two games of 259 by Jim St. John. Many of those tough splits and railroads were picked up like it was very easy to do. Bill Lillard and Harry Smith broke the all time World's Invitational 12 game record only to have Jim St. John of Chicago top not only their record but also bowl a 1410 six game series, highest of all time. Everyone enjoyed the trip tremendously and are looking forward to our next one.
