Hundreds of pretty things suitable for Christmas will be on sale and a roast chicken supper will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. at a charge of thirty-five cents a plate. There will be no admission eharge. Charles G. Frett, who recently embarked in the retail fcoal business her?, has mei with sc much success that he is planning on erecting coal sheds somewhere along the Northwestern tracks, on the west side, in the near future. From the school notes comes the word that Genevieve Knox and Frances Welch were the orators Monday. Even a woman can be an orator. Job Vasey, who resides a few miles southwest of town, met With a serious acciderit Sunday. While working around a gasoline engine, used for pumping water, the wind carried the leg of his overalls into the gear and before Ml*. Vasey could extricate himself the flesh and muscle had been torn from his right leg from the knee to the ankle. Will Smith, who resides near Ringwood, had his right hand caught in a corn shredder Thursday afternoon with the result that the thumb was badly smashed end the tip of tne index finger cut off, making it necessary to amputate part of the finger, though the thumb can be saved. Mr. Smith is fortunate that he did not lose his entire hand as he is now minus one hand, having lost his left hand in a shredder sixteen years ago. FORTY YEARS AGO Taken from the Files of Nov. 80, 1922 M. L. Worts is having a log cabin erected on his property on Fox river, south of this village. 'Tis said that the cabin will be a real nifty one when completed. Although the sand boxes have been stored for the winter, there are still several of the golf bugs who refuse to be driven away from the McHenry links. Some of these fellows are already planning on games for Christmas and New Year's. Boy, page the doctor. Members of the Oriwego club and a few invited guests enjoyed ah overall and apron party at Woodman hall Saturday evening. The entertainment committee was made up of Florence Muldoon of Whitihg, Inc.; Miss Nellie Doherty, Messrs. Edward Conway and John Bolger. A grand march was one of the special features of the evening, while confetti a r i d s e r p e n t i n e s w e r e v e r y much in evidence durihg the darice numbers. After having been deprived of their regular basketball gahies for two years or more, local fans will, no doubt, be pleased to know that this great indoor sport is to be revived by the high school here. The. opening of the basketball season will take place at the school gymnasium on Friday evening. Dec. 1, wheh the first and second teams of the local high school will buckle up against the teams from the Huntley school. Coach Stringer of the McHenry school has some very promising material and has been busy in an endeavor to develop the timber at hand. There was a turkey dressing at the Hobart home last week. What were left, that the hunters did not get, were dressed and shipped to Chicago. One of the best young gobblers was weighed, after it was dressed, and tipped the scales at twenty- two pounds. What, would the nine young ones and their mother, that the hunters got, be worth? . They were early hatched and fine birds. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Tnkeh from the Files of Dec. 2, 1937 The community was shocked Saturday morning, to learn of the sudden death of Dr. David G. Wells, 69, which occurred in a hospital in Hollywood, Calif., where he accompanied his son, Glen, less than a week ago. Dr. Wells, a well known local physician for many years, also served as mayor of McHenry for a few years. Funeral services and burial took place in this city. Simon Stoffel, McHenry's Oldest active business man and Organizer of the Stoffel and Reihansperger Insurance company, was honored at a dinner given by the Fidelity-Phenix Fire Insurance at Neisen's restaurant on Nov. 30, for his jjiore than fifty years of service with the company. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Purvey celebrated their silver wedding anniversary on I^sy. 28 with a party of relatives^ as dinner Kues\^, and that-evening they were surprised by a large group of friends. A wedding of interest to Ideal friends and relatives took place at St. Benedict's church, Chicago, at 4 o'clock Thanksgiving Day when Miss Gayle Hoeffleur of Chicago became the bride of Charles Steilen, son 6f Mr. and Mrs. George Steilen of Chicago, forrrier local residents. McHenry now has an Alumni association, the of fleet's of which are Harold Lirtdsey, president; Jafck F*urVey, vicepresident; Rita Freund, secretary and Edward Matthews, tr&asiirgr. -$<1 Mrs. Albert Frett, 75, passed away at her home in the north end of town Tuesday, after suffering strokes of paralysis, and Raymond Byron Poe, tenmonth- old son of Mrs. Byron Poe, whose husband was accident ly shot while hunting three weeks ago, died at Sherman hospital, Elgin, of pneumonia on Nov. 28.
