NEW AUILT BOOKS "PROMISES TO KEEP", by Agnes W. Dooley. This account of the life of Doctor Tom Dooley has been written by his mother, Mrs. Agnes Dooley. It is the story of a man whose background was typically American, but whose development, life work and final destiny were anything but typical. The text and pictures cover young Tom Dooley's growing up in St. Louis, his education in local schools, including St. Louis University high school, his first year at Notre Dame, "boot" training in the Navy, transfer to the Marines, return to college, study at the Sorbonne, entrance into St. Louis university school of medicine, and commissioning as a U. S. Navy officer. The steps, some of them accidental, by which the young unknown Navy doctor was at this point catapulted into national prominence are recounted by Mrs. Dooley. It happened in 1954, when Lieutenant (junior grade) Dooley found himself ordered to Haiphong with a few Nave corpsmen to give medical aid to the hundreds of thousands cf refugees who took the "Passage to Freedom" out of northern Viet Nam. Dr. Dooltv's subsequent role as "Thanh Mo America"^working among the people of Laos, his phenomenal expeditions raising money and medicine throughout the country, his many lectures and broadcasts, the preparation of his three books, his fatal illness and tragic end are related by his mother who, after all, was the person who knew him best. ' Iny his thirty-four years," CardinM Spellman said at the time of his death, "Doctor Dooley has done what very few have done in tire allotted Scriptural lifetime." "Promises to Keep" is a permanent record of the maginificent legacy of idealism which Dr. Dooley has bequeathed to the young people of America. "AGAINST THE AMERICAN GRAIN-' essays on the effects of mass culture, by Dwight Macdonaid Dwight Macdonaid focuses on the American pursuit of 'culture and its ambiguous results. The usual approach to mass culture had been sociological; Mr. Macdonaid turns to the subject as a man of letters. "I am concern*! not ao much with the dead sea cf mass cult," he writes, "as with the life of the tide line where the decisive struggles for survival take place between higher and lower organisms." In trying to level down the best, Mr. Macdonaid argues, our democratic society has usually succeeded in leveling up the worst, so that high and low culture merge in a swampy middleground where second-rate Writers are acclaimed as geniusei? first-rate writers retreat into private worlds, and the. language itself begins to decompose. " A g a i n s t t h e A m e r i c a n Grain" ranges over many topics: the new versions of the Bible; the careers of such her roes (and victims) of modern culture as Mark Twain, Jam^s Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and James Agee; the national obsession with facts and with how-to-do-it books; the fifty volumes of "Gxeat Books of the Western World"; the new unabridged dictionary; the superiority of English "amateur journalism" to our own professionalized and compartment talized kind; the sudden inflation and subsequent deflation of such highbrow best sellers as "By Love Possessed" and "The Outsider"; and the decline of the English laguage. It is a conservative and in some ways a reactionary book whose thesis may be summed up in its author's words: "A people which loses contact with its past becomes culturally psychotic." It brings together tht major essays that Dwight Macdonaid had written ov^r the past ten years. "YET SHE MUST DIE", by Hugh McCutcheon. John Meredith wanted to eat his cake and have it too. He arranged to have his wealthy wife murdered so that he could marry his beautiful French mktrait and retain control of his wife's money. But that was before the mistress decided she preferred to marry another man and before Meredith, attacked^and robbed in Tangier's Kasb&h, lay foi days in a ccma, helpless to lirevent the murder, that he no longer wanted. "THE UNQUIET SLEEP", by William Haggard. William Haggard's talent for writing about the ethical and sometimes criminal lapses of a few members of the higher echelons of business and the Establishment is never better displayed than in this suspensefilled novel of international smuggling and narcotics. Actually the product in question was not considered a narcotic. Its respectable manufacturer called it "Mecron", and the less reverent referred to it as the "Executive's Friend." You took the tranquilizer, lgy down for an hour and got up ready to make a fi-es-h start on an evening of fun or work. But one day a research chemist found hf had made a demented addict of a monkey with these pills, and other strange reports began to filter into London's Security Executive about this supposedly harmless tranquilizer. Discreet investigation uncovered highly placed connections with the matter. A fascinating puzzle is skillfully revealed and solved here by an expert in this sort of i>e- Hind-the scene machinations where the acquisition and retention ot power leads to desperate measures. The states of Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming cover 7 times the area of New England, but have fewer people than New York City. Advertise - It Pays!
