Samuel McDonald, a resident of this village for more than 60 years, passed away at his home south of town Friday evening, after being confined to his bed since the first of the year. A pretty mid-winter wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's Catholic church at nine o'clock. Wednesday morning, the principals of the event being Miss Eva Degen and Mr. Joseph Blake, Rev. Fr. A. Royer officiating. The "Home Guards" is the name of a new club that has just been organized at the home of Miss Agnes Matthew*. Officers are: Mildred Gay lord, president; Agnes Matthews, vice-president; Helen Fay, secretary; Ellen Spencer, treasurer; Ruth Bacon, chaplain; Varina Wentworth, organist. C. F. Norager, enterprising proprietor of the Orchard Beach hotel and resort, has prefected all plans for an informal dance and skating race to take place at his hotel, on Fox river, next Saturday night and Sunday. The dance, open to the public, will be held Saturday night at the hotel and on Sunday people will be given the opportunity of seeing four good skating races on Fox river. Rlverview Camp of Royal Neighbors of this place is one of the most active fraternal societies in this village. The camp, at the present time, has about seventy members, while ;new applications for membership are coming in right along. Ed Wallis' hog house, together with several valuable hogs, was consumed by fire at Ostend one day recently. Fire has visited this farm quite frequently in the past few years. Several years ago the house on the farm was destoryed and a few years later two barns, well filled with feed, burned to the ground. Forty Years Ago Taken from the files of Jan. 25, 1993 John R. Brents, only colored man to establish a permanent home in McHenry, and who for more than forty years resided here where he served as school janitor, passed away at the Soldiers' Home at Quincy, 111., last Saturday, Jan. 20, at the age of 77. The body was shipped to McHenry where services were held from the M. E. church with burial in the family lot in Woodstock cemetery. Friends here were shocked to learn of the death of Prof. Byron Corbin which occurred at Ypsilanti, Mich., after a week's illness. Nelils, near Crystal Lake, Saturday evening where a few hours of cards and dancing were followed by an oyster supper. Those who made up the merry parly were: Messrs. and Mesdames A. J. Schneider, Robert Thompson, E. E. Bassett, James N. Sayler, C. E. Mead, Andrew Eddy, Llcyd Eddy and R. R. G. Chamberlin and Rollo. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schoewer entertained twelve relatives at a six o'clock dinner at their home on John street Sunday evening, the occasion being their third wedding anniversity. N. J. Justen and son, West Side undertakers and furniture men, have received their new automobile hearse which they used for the first time at the John Brents funeral. The body of the new vehicle was taken from the firm's horse drawn vehicle and with several other changes, the old hearse has been transformed into one of the finest outfits to be found in McHenry county. The McHenry firm thus bears the distinction of being the first, in the smaller towns of the county, to add such an equipment to their service. Twenty-Five Years Ago Taken from the files of Jan. 27, 1938 Tragedy lurked in the icebound depths of Pistakee Bay, Sunday, when two boys were drowned and three men narrowly escaped when they were trapped inside an automobile as it broke through the ice in Pistakee Bay and sank in ten feet of water. All were from Chicago. A four hour battle to save the boys in which Clarence Douglas and Harold Hobbs, employees of the Public- Service took part, failed tragically when the last of six tanks of oxygen gave out as the boys were being rushed to Condell Memorial hospital. McHenry residents are snug in their homes following floods in northern Illinois and the Fox river valley caused by swollen creeks and rivers after an all night rain Sunday night, continuing Monday morning. Because the ground was frozen, the water was not absorbed by the soil and ponds and running water was every where. Cold weather, however, Monday night changed the scene. Low ering temperatures turned rain into snow Tuesday with high winds bringing the first blizzard of the year. From 50 degrees above zero, Monday, the temperature dropped to around zero Tuesday night. Tuesday, Jan. 25, was one of outstanding importance, for two highly respected couples of this vicinity, Supervisor and Mrs. Stephen H. Freund and her brother and his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Klapperich, as they celebrated their golden wedding anniversity at the home of the former. Fred Huemann, 61, a life time resident of this vicinity, passed away at his home on Riverside drive, Jan. 20, following a three years illness. Helen Ann, 2!£ year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Doherty, passed away at the Evanston hospital, Jan. 22, after a few weeks illness in which she had undergone surgery and several blood transfusions. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Blake entertained about fifty relatives and friends at their home, Saturday evening, in obser vance of their silver wedding anniversary. Her subject will be "Laughter, Freedom's Secret Weapon." In one of her recent appearances, Miss Jacobson's performance was described as the most significant humorous lecture on today's platform." She is a native of Manchester, England. During a life filled with interest and incident, she played many fine parts on the English stage, but feels she has done her best work in the theater on the directing side. In this country, adding television to her other activities, sne recently did a very successful series on "Women in Shakespeare and Shaw" and is now doing a weekly appearance with poetry readings, dramatic and humorous. She had been ill for about a month. Mrs. Duncan was bom in Scotland Nov. 7, 1881, and resided in McHenry shores for seven and one-hflf years after moving to this area front Rourtd I,ake. PASSFIELD John Alfred Passfield, well known farmer --of Volo, died at Lake County General hospital, Waukegan, on Jan. 30, at the age of 52. Funeral services were held from the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home Saturday afternoon at 1:30, with Rev. Mahlon Pommeroy, pastor of the Wnuconda Federated chttrch officiating at last rites. Burial Was in Woodland cemetery. Mr. Passfield was respected by all who knew him. He and his wife were fond of children* and although they had no family of their own they took great pleasure in the company of nieces and nephews. He was a well known dairy farmer, taking over management of his father's, farm after the latter's death in 1941. Two years he entered contests for large corn yields and each time chalked up enviable records. On Dec. 30, 1936, he was united in marriage to Alifta Dowel 1 at Woodstock. In 1961, the Mort Jensen family planned a surprise celebration on the occasion of their silver antfversaryr 1t was a ant and memorable occasion in spite of the fact that Mr. Passfield was in poor health. Since 1950 he had suffered from arthritis, and for a timjt he and his wife spent part ol the year in Tucson, Ariz. Hove* ever, he always wanted M come back to be0 with hn friends and relatives. In spit* of being confined to a wheel chair much of the time, hi was able to ride, and enjoyed especially driving by the different farms to see how the crops went progressing.
