May 9. 1963 ••***" ; of Interesting affairs through- PLAN SUMMER h FESTIVAL FOR SATURDAY AUG. 3 Eva L«V«M|W Chairman of the this year'* Utfiual summer festival, Bill Walter, set Saturday, Aug. 3, as the date of the affair. The proclamation was made at the first general meeting of the Cullom-Knoll Association held last Sunday in the beachhouse. There was a very good showing and a large amount of business was transacted in a short time. Theresa Schultz was named by president Don Parent! as the chairman for the Memorial Day ceremony to be held on May 30. The time will probably be at 11 a.m. if this doe* not conflict with the schedule of the American Legion Post which plays such a prominent part in our program. According to Mrs. Schultz, they will participate again this year. Plans are proceeding according to schedule and we will have further announcements as they come t hrough. General improvements of the beachhouse were submitted to the gathering by Don Parenti and were ratified by the group. They include gutters for the building, and exterior paint job, and such other repairs as may be necessary. Several new large signs for the beach will be ordered and posted in the near future carrying such information that the beach is a private one, no dogs allowed, etc. A suggestion was made to prepare some type of lc£ skating rink for next winter. The lake has not proven suitable for this sport in past years. Usually the ice is too bumpy and snow removal is next to impossible. The suggestion was well taken and was incorporated Into the minutes. Charles Lund, Who occupies the first house east of the beach, was accepted as a new member and introduced to the assembly. A very worthwhile meeting and one that fealty got results!! Here's hoping the attendance is even better for the next one! out the year and this one is ^ always very well received. Don your bonnet (especially if it has BEES In it, or BIRDS on it!) and trot yourself to the beach for an evening of merriment. You con bet the prizes will be lis novel as the chapeaux displayed with Petey Schmidt in charge. Three judges have been selected from outside of our community in order to place the judging on a fairer basis. See you tonight at 8 p.m.? "Kraxy Hat" Party Tonight It will be interesting to see what kind of ideas our gals employ In designing their "krazy hats" for the party tonight which will be held in the beachhouse starting at 8 p.m. The social is being given by the Ladies of the Lake and new members are always welcome! The women sponsor a variety Caaeer Drive Neta Almost One Hundred Dollars An excellent showing was made by our hamlet in the recent completed drive for funds for cancer research. The total collected, according to chairman Mrs. Virginia Gibson, was $94.73. Top collector was Timothy (Tiny) Tomsello who gathered in $19.05. An enterprising lad, he covered four territories! The next three were Barbara Thncker, Chrys Levesque and Lorraine Frost. Others who proved their worth to the community were Verna Schlofner, Anita McMahon, Jeanne Anderson, Carolynne Taylor, Penny Miller, Elma Nelson, James Taylor and Mary Tomasello. Words of appreciation to all the collectors and to all who gave so generously from Mrs. Gibson who was gratified with the results. noon so that it can be sorted and priced. If you need a pickup, call 385-3191. We are asking that you store the stuff as long as possible because we cannot clutter up the small beachhouse. Starting on Monday, May 20, you can deposit your stuff at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Theodor Olsen at 5101 W. Fountain Lane or at the home of this reporter. Village Board The r e g u l a r l y s c h e d u l e d meeting of the president and trustees will be held on Monday, May 13, at 8 p.m. In the beachhouse. The public is encouraged to attend. "One Man's Poison Is another man's medicine." We hope we have that quotation correct, but anyway, the Ladies of the Lake hope to capitilize on it! Your "poison" may be just what the gal down the street has been looking for. We refer, of course, to outgrown clothing, small items of furniture or some of those "white elephants" from your dish cabinets! The women will be holding their annual rummage sale at the beach on Saturday, May 25, from 10 in the morning until 4 p.m. unless they sell out before that tlijie! All articles of clothing (in good condition, please), shoes, jewelry, pocketbooks, boots, skates, dishes, pots, pans, and small pieces of furniture will lie gladly accepted. You may bring your merchandise to the bcachhouse on Friday after- The Fleet's In!! Three of ,-tb^ handsomest young lads in the community are gracing us with a visit at this time. The three Navy lads who are on leave are Greg Burg, Butch Stacknick and Bob Gates. Bob Gates, airman, who is striking for 3rd class P.O., arrived via jet at O'Hare Airport last Friday. He has completed studies at Memphis, Tenn., and will report to Glynco Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Ga., on May 19. He will pursue such interesting endeavor as working with air conditioning units, pressurization, jet ejection seats, life rafts, canopies, etc. In August, Bob will take his tests for the rating of A.M.E. If he makes it, he will receive his advance in rating in November. Another young sailor who Is striking for his P.O. 3rd class is young Greg Burg. Greg is due to receive his machinist mate's rating soon. This young lad reports back to his home port of Longbeach, Calif., on May 19 where he will resume sea duty. Butch Stacknick has completed his tour of duty at Great Lakes which mom and dad enjoyed because of his proximity to home. Butch is scheduled to become a fireman in two months. At the end of his leave, he reports to San Francisco where he will make connections with a plane which will fly him to a Japanese port where he will board the U.S.S. Ticonderoga--an aircraft carrier. This should be adventuresome duty. Although all threie of these young men cut their formal education short, they are furthering their studies with the help of Uncle Sam and they are preparing for a fine future. We couldn't be happier for them and we shall consider it a privilege to publish their progress. More Brake--Less Acceleration! With the improvements made on Spring Road, it seems as though some drivers are leaning a little too heavily on the gas pedal. Residents on other streets are making the same complaints. There are many children who play along the right of way, and it would be catastrophic if child and vehicle collided, and it happens all the time. But, not here, please! The village streets are posted at 20 m.p.h. and at times, even this speed is TOO fast. Let our kiddies live and YOU plan to leave a little earlier! 'Nuff said? He Plays, She Cleans I Elsie made good use of sfx days recently when she got Papa Clayt Nelson out of the way for that length of time. He "choo-chooed" to Buttlj Creek, Mich., where he joined up with, his doctor sons, Clift and Don. The three motored to upper Micliigan where they joined forces with sixteen other males--intent on one thing-- bringing home the fish. They weren't even hampered by domestic duties such as cleaning and cooking. They had hired two professionals for this. Altho the yield was not as great as anticipated, they all had more than enough for their needs. After four days in the wilds, the patriarch of the family enjoyed the company of his grandchildren in Battle Creek for two days. • By the time he returned, Elsie had completed her spring housecleaning! "Billet Doux" From "Mflhlco" That's really mixing French with Spanish, but wouldn't you be disappointed if we reported in an orthodox manner? We received a handsome color card from Acapulco on Monday morning. Author of the card was Loretta McCarthy who celebrated her retirement from the post officc department with a trip to Mexico. She reports that she and her party are staying at the Hotel El Mirado which faces the beautiful blue Pacific. Her balcony looks out over the ocean and the view must be fantastic. Sounds like a jolly good vacation and we shall have gpore on this when the travellers return. Congrats Dcp't.
