Pag* Twelve THE McHENHY PLAXNDEALER Sunnysld. Estates ^MOTHER-DAUGHTER i^CUNCHEON ENJOYED BY GIRL SCOUTS loan Wjricxyokki 385-3105 Thursday, May 29, 1063 Thft weekend of May 18 and 19 played a big part in the lives <if the local Girl Scouts. On Saturday, May 18, Alice I3iesohke's Troop H8 hold thoir Mother-Daughter luncheon at the johnsburg school. The event began with a flag ceremony, followed by a round of introductions. Next came the luncheon and most of the food • served was prepared by the girls themselves. Because they couldn't decide on which gnce to sing before Ihe luncheon, they decided on one before and one after. Next the girls performed a son<£ dramatization entitled "The Mermaid," tvitti all the girls participating. This was followed by a "Fly-Up ceremony for their new-comer, Joanne Milliard; after which the leaders presented Ihe girls with the different badges they earned throughout the year. Twenty girls earned eight different badges, each girl earning from one to three different ones. The second class rank badge was earned by seven girls Five girls received year pins. The leaders »then presented each girl with a small gift ana special mention was made ol the four girls: who had perfect attendance all year. They were: Connie Jablonski, Mary Jo Kennebeck, Mary Jane Lakowske and Rosemarie Thelen. Then the loaders commended the committee women mothers for all their help; and a special certificate of appreciation and a gift was presented to Kathy (Cricket) Ruth, a Senior scout, who has been a program aide to Troop 88 through the entire year. Next the troop said "good luck and goodby" to two girls: Reginia Kern, who is moving to Pennsylvania; and to Nancy Roggenbuck, who is moving to California. These two girls were presented with autograph books and at the end of the ceremonies the troop lost no time in filling in same. Alice then informed all the girls and their mothers that she would like to go on to an older troop and asked for leaders for Troop 88; also they discussed th® camping at Chapftjan Hills and the summer activities planned thus fat The day ended with a friendship circle arid the singing of "Taps." , Court Of Awards Sunday, May iy, was the long awaited day for our girls in Troop 295. We all worked long and hard for it and believe me, it was well worth every effort. While awaiting everyone's arrival, the girls served punch and hors d'oeuvres. When everyone had arrived we played a get-acquainted game entitled "My Name Is..." After we laughingly learned each other's name, leader Marge Palmer commented on the past year and regretfully informed the girls that she would be unable to continue on as leader next year. Pre.sentation of awards was next and the girls received their long-awaited skating badge; Mary Farley and Kathi Parker received their second class rank badge; our new girl, Alice Niemiec received her Girl Scout pin and her World ssoeiation pin; then all the ther girls received their yeai pin, with Kathi Parker receiving her five-year pin; and finally the first class ran& badge was awarded to Mary Anderson, Carol Anh Dehn, Candy Kobus, Carla Martin, Cathy Palmer, Cheryl Patterson and Judy Walczynski. (Kathy Barth had also earned this badge, but she and her parents were unable to attend. The presentation was made at her home the following Sunday). After the awards the girls performed their dance (that was so popular at the Father- Daughter banquet) for the benefit of the mothers who had not seen it and then the girls put on some entertainment in the way of skits, etc., for their folks. This was followed by yours truly having her little say, which was mainly to inform them that I would be willing to take the leadership cf Troop 295 next year, if all goes as planned and then the announcements were made regarding everything between now and September. Next came the big surprise that the girls and Marge and I had worked so hard on and tried so very hard to keep a secret. To our own lyrics of a popular song, the girls presented their parents with a beautifully framed picture of themself in full uniform and I have never in my life seen pepple so very touched as the girls' folks were at that moment. As I said earlier it was truly well worth every effort. After the excitement died down, we enjoyed our supper and did a lot of visiting together. When the dav was over the parents left and "our girls" stayed to clean up the entire mess. Some people might think it was crazy to have an affair like this in a home, but with help like Troop 295, anyone could do it. Marge and I are very proud of the girls and all their accomplishments throughout the year. Weekend Home We happily learned that Chet Banker spent last weekend at home. His family came to have a visit with him; this included his Grandfather Banker (who is 86 years young) and his Grandmother Banker; his father and mother from Boscobel, Wis.; his sister and her family (the Cahons) from Kenosha; his brother and his family from Chicago; and his aunt and uncle and their family from Racine, Wis. Chet has himself a ball and this, of course, made Dennie and June and her folks, Bessie and Bill Schwieger, very happy, too. If all goes well, perhaps he ll get home for a weekend again soon. Keep up the good work, Chet! Lu, she lost her mother the following Wednesday. Although her mom had been very ill and thty knew her days were numbered, it was much sooner than anticipated and a real shock to Lu. Her mother, Bertha Kirwin, was buried at Chicago on Friday, May 24. We extend to Lu Davis and her entire family our very deepest sympathy and an offer of help in her time of need. Regular Meeting Troop 88 held their final regular meeting and other than dues and attendance it was strictly a fun meeting. They sang happy birthday to everyone who has a birthday between May 18 and July 8 (the first day of Day Camp) and then the balance cf the time was spent playing games. But the girls finally pulled a fast one on Alice Bieschke and Sylvia Von Obstfelder. The girls presented them each with an official leader's handbag, and they were both speechless. They were truly tickled l>eyond words. Dates To Remember Just a reminder for those who are interested in each of the following: May 30, the Memorial Day Parade; May 31, the May Crowning at St. John's church and Eighth grade graduation at Johnsburg public school; June 1, the deadline for registration for Girl Scouts who intend to go to Day Camp Vacation Time Yes, vacation time is here The Simmons family is enjoying the pleasure of the company of their friends, Ann Carstensen of Chicago, who is spending her two-week vacation with them. This is always a happy occasion at the Simmons house. Sad News We were terribly sorry to learn that Jack Davis is hospitalized at St. Therese's hospital in Waukegan as the result of a heart attack he suffered last week. He will be spending at least five weeks there and then a long time convalescing at home, so I'm sure he would be happy to hear from all his friend®^ and neighbors.
